  • In this optional session, Steven Lawson shows that Spurgeon fearlessly taught the doctrines of grace and simultaneously held forth the free offer of salvation in Jesus Christ. He gives a passionate call for all Christians to follow Spurgeon in maintaining the proper balance between divine sovereignty in salvation and fiery passion in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

17:40, on irresistable grace, reminds me of the psalm:
Thank the Lord, all ye heathens, laud him, all ye nations
For his grace has overcome us, and the truth of the Lord is eternal
    Halleluya

Ok an actual translation I didn't make up on the spot from tye hebrew reads:
O praise the LORD, All ye nations: Praise him, all ye people.
For his merciful kindness is great toward us: And the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
"merciful kindness" is from hebrew "chesed" whoch the king James typically translates as "Grace", the translation "is great toward us" displays arminian leanings since the hebrew word means "overcome"

    1 Timothy 2 v 4
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
    1 Corinthians 4 v 5
Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

Very powerful sermon, thanks for posting - following Chesterton’s comment on original sin I think total depravity too is empirically true. What I disagree with is the selective outrage against Catholicism, at least today (I can’t comment on Spurgeon’s time) - I mean the woke pope is no prize but “mainline” Protestants are far worse - they have a Savior but no sin to be saved from, except gibberish like “transphobia” & “heteronormativity,” which really mean is that sin is no longer offending God but pleasing him

I love Steve Lawson but he's off track, here in the beginning already. Whatever you think of Calvinism is beside the point right now. However, when you equate following the teaching of any man with evangelism of the Gospel, you're wrong.
Before you say follow him more to understand, I'll let you know that I do follow Bro Lawson a lot and have a deep appreciation for him.

That is a good point! I understand that 'doctrine of grace" cam about as a label to escape the "Calvinism" brand.

What he said in minute 24 is that we shall preach the whole console of God wether it says come to Christ today or wether it says God brings you to Christ. It’s in the Bible and it has to go out to audience from pulpit.

most of what is called the "church" today is not. If there were a Spurgeon today they would find a way to condemn him. They would find a "tickling" "cheap grace" message to drown out the truth that Spurgeon so well pointed to and lived. Don't be miss lead by the over use of "Calvinism", it's Christ we preach, believe, and this was true for Spurgeon and actually what S. Lawson was saying but it is too much put to Calvinism, for it there's anything about what Calvin taught, or any person it's Christ. Praise you Lord!

    • @classycactus8449
      @classycactus8449 3 роки тому +12

I had that sentiment initially, but I think that if you get the point of what is being said, then that sentiment is greatly diluted. The whole purpose of talking about Spurgeon is to give an example of a person that focused exclusively on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Spurgeon is not being presented as a great man, but as a man through which Christ did great things. The focus ultimately is still on Christ. Moreover, this is probably a conference, so it isn't a sermon or something like that. In the description of the video, it says it was an optional session. So, it was more of an informative conference presentation, rather than preaching, etc. Context is important. If he was explicitly preaching a sermon, and this was his sermon, then there would be a problem.

“Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.”

      It’s a very man-centred religion.
