Bicorno is one of the most underestimated guard that Fiore show us, this is the way I started to use it. It become one of the most useful Guards.

Dear Friends, I have just changed this video in "OUTDATED" only because now I think to have a better grasp of the actions in which I use Bicorno. I hope to make a video about them soon.
    All the bests.
    Federico

Yes please do another video on bicorno. I have always struggled to understand how to use this strange and unusual posta. All the others are easy to understand but bicorno is a mystery to me how to use it. Any help would be very useful. Thanks 😊

I very much appreciated this visualization as a fiorei practitioner, thank you!

Interesting. The position of the hands and blade are similar to what Talhoffer calls the 'turned around hand,' in messer/arming sword.

    Interesting.
What do you think of the idea that bicorno is done with an inverted left hand? If you look at the plate from the Getty (0:16 in the video), it could be seen to convey the back of the left hand facing to the left, with the fingers going over the top of the grip.
When I've tried this a couple of times, it seems to be very good for lateral stability and the point always being strongly placed on the centre.

+Tea Kew I really wanted the Bicornio with the reverse grip to work, but it just doesn't seem to work as well as this interpretation for me.

+Tea Kew Hi Tea! I am of the idea that the sword change the way to handle, i will receive a type XVa with a round pommel this summer and i will do a video with the differences, you are so right. The hand is put different, also the whole Fiore suggest a round pommel. :D Thanks for watching and for the comment.

Tea Kew we've been doing some attempts with it, and haven't had much luck either. That said, it opened up for an incredibly devious attack, pushing the pommel with the other hand as a guide, adding nearly a foot into the range of a punta that the opponent wasn't prepared for. But it certainly wasn't overall practical, just added a variation.
We noticed however that puntas made from Bicorno were generally stronger against exchanges, as the reverse grip naturally made it stick to the underarm. It changed the plane of weakness, if that makes any sense.
Again, specific application, not general - this interpretation definitely works.

I know this is an old and outdated video, but i see people do this guard a lot and basically just use it as a provocation so they can unwind an unterhau when the opponent gets nea, which only works against the inexperoenced. It makes more sense to me that bicornio is just using the false edge to gain leverage in the bind, but i dont know.

I argue the bicorno presented by Fiore was meant for thrusts, and the parry you display is instead a transition into the Crown.

Richie Demo Hi, it’s an outdated interpretation.

Quick English tip: In the third person, English verbs end in S. For example: I eat, you eat, we eat, they eat ....BUT ...HE eats SHE eats, IT eats, JOHN eats, MARIA eats, etc.
This makes it much easier to read. So in your notes: "Here white executeS a counter-cut."
In words which end in a SH or CH sound, -es is added to make the s more clear. TIP: If the S sound is unclear, we add -es.
"The left hand holdS the pommel and pullS, the right hand pushES up and rotateS around the handle."
EXCEPTION: the word can. HE can, SHE can, I can YOU can. etc. No S added.
Capital letters are used for emphasise.

+Michael Curl Thanks for the tip, i can't swear I will be able to don't do errors in the next videos. (or in this answer!!!) Unfortunately english grammar and Italian grammar are realy different and I try to do my best with my knowledge and corrector, but of course is not that easy. I know that from your point of view can be a pain to read such stuff, I'm sorry.
      Cheers

The plays on Bicorno shown as a parry and riposte is basically a German Schielhau done in two tempo :)

At 2:45, your companion was cutting the air in front of you. He was not trying to cut you.

Cutting to gain the centerline, specified in the description.

So, in your view, the direction in some Renaissance treatises to NOT attack the opponent's blade is not a universal truth, at least as regards Fiore?

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  7 років тому +1

Well, I don't know what treatises are you refering to but yes, some times is important to attack the body and not the blade and some other times is important to attack the blade and not the opponent, you can also find this in some Italian treatises too in the renaissance, called attacchi di spada.
If you always strike to the opponent body this is the way to double hits and to 1 or 2 actions duels. Sometime even people who advice this kind of thing starts to act in sparring in other ways, like feinting attacks and thrusts out of range to enter with other actions.
This is only a more premeditated and easy to see way to do this kind of thing. Because if you let your opponent know what you are doing in the first place, his reaction could be more easy to premeditate (namely, i strike to the center, he can only attack my blade or my hand) so i can work my second indention out from this. This is fencing.

Some systems which start to exclude thrusts (and so the reposte in only one tempo) tend to advice to always strike the opponent and not the blade, in this particular and strange situation is a good advice.

Thank you. I was referring to Dobringer: "Do not strike at the sword, but always to the openings, to the head, the body if you whish to remain unharmed. "

+Federico Malagutti Molto apprezzato davvero; la bicorno è una posta strana, e mi è stato finora abbastanza difficile trovare spiegazioni chiare sulla sua utilità in azione pratica.
