Saginaw - THE END! - Last Cargo Run of the Season

  • No really... this is it! After a series of videos on this channel documenting final runs of the shipping season for several ships, along with final arrivals and departures on the Duluth side of the harbor, this was the final cargo run from the Twin Ports... or any ship on Lake Superior... for the 2022-2023 shipping season. The season runs from late March to mid January each year.
Here is the Saginaw departing from Superior, Wisconsin on the afternoon of January 21, 2023, carrying taconite she loaded at the Burlington Northern #5 dock, bound for Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. This was the last of three runs she did between Superior and Sault Ste. Marie following the closure of the Soo Locks (though the locks were technically still open during a portion of her first run). After unloading this final cargo of taconite, the Saginaw would layup for the winter at the Algoma Steel dock.
A small gathering of "boatnerds" gathered at the pier in Superior to document the final departure of the shipping season. The Saginaw rewarded the faithful with two captain's salutes on departure. Note the hissing sound her horn produces before it sounds out the salute... this is something I've always liked about the Saginaw's horn. And she seems to hiss longer in cold weather, no doubt needing extra time to get the horn to activate.
The Saginaw was able to continue runs between Superior and Sault Ste. Marie because the Algoma Steel dock is on the upbound side of the Soo Locks. That allowed her to access the dock even though the locks were closed. I suspect the extra three cargo runs had to be tough on the Saginaw's crew, as most were likely anxious to go home and see their families. With the low amount of ice this year, the Saginaw could have theoretically continued to run throughout the winter... but the logistics of continuing to run BN5 dock for one ship was probably cost prohibitive. Besides, the Saginaw and her crew deserved their rest too!
The 639-foot Saginaw was built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company at Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1953 as the John J. Boland, being the third ship to carry that name. In 1999, after 46 years with the American Steamship Company, she was acquired by Lower Lakes Towing and was renamed the Saginaw. (American Steamship then renamed another vessel as the John J. Boland, which can be seen elsewhere on this channel.) The Saginaw has a 20,000 ton capacity and uses an older style front-mounted A-frame self-unloading system, which has a capacity of 7,700 tons per hour. In 2007, the Saginaw was converted from steam to diesel. She is currently powered by a single MaK 6M43C 6-cylinder engine producing 8,160 bhp, giving her a top speed of 16.1 mph.
Following this upload, I will be taking a break from posting videos for a week or two while I prepare a special video for everyone to enjoy. I will also return in March with a series of extra videos I shot during the 2022-2023 shipping season. There is plenty more to see here before the start of the next shipping season. Stay tuned!

She’s beautiful in her own unique way. A grand veteran of the Great Lake. I pray that she will continue to sail for a couple more years. Not permanently retired. Thank you for going out there all the time to videotape them all.

Can't complain with a good looking classic laker to "finally" close the shipping season. To you, the shore support facilities, the boats, and especially the crews thanks so much for the work you do and the benefits we receive-not the least the pure enjoyment of all the action!

Goodbye Saginaw Crew. Have a nice time off. Boy time will fly by and the end of March will be here. It's almost mid February! You have a nice two weeks off. You deserve it. I'll be anxious to see what the special video will look like. Until then stay safe and warm 🤗.

I don't know who needs a break more...you or the Captains and the ships' crews. You work as hard as they do! I love the Saginaw and her funny-at-first horn. And how great of the Captain to show some love to all who came to send her off for a well-deserved rest! Thank you, and I hope you get some time off doing whatever it is that you love to do. If the coming Spring season *April 1st* videos are anything like last year, we're in for a great big surprise!

Saginaw's doing it in style! And in a hurry too. Michipicotin would certainly approve. 😆 Now which laker would be perfect to open the shipping season in March? Arthur M. Anderson? Wilfred Sykes? Alpena? All three Barkers? 😉

Wow, a two Salute departure... that was neat. It's rather amusing that so my people cannot maneuver an automobile with the ease and precision that the Captains and Crew maneuver these huge vessels. You have certainly earned a break from your dedication of providing us with all of these great ship videos. Thank you.... and I will be looking forward to your future postings. Enjoy your time off.

If my car had a bow thruster like the Saginaw, I would be better maneuvering it.
