I am not getting the option to preview the video within the document. If I hover over the smart chip I can either go to the link or copy the URL and those are the only options given to me. I was sure to copy the link from the "share" button and not the URL at the top of the page, and I made sure the video was public. The video I am trying to do this with is years old, so it isn't an issue of it being new either. Not sure what to do!
I can give you two suggestions: 1) When you hover, be sure to take a pause. I have noticed sometimes I hover and I just see the URL but if I give it a second, the preview option appears. 2) It is possible the UA-cam creator disallowed playing the video on websites as an embed. If that is the case, this will not work.
Thank you for this. I updated to the latest version of Chrome, but when I put a You Tube link in a Google Doc, it does not give me the option to make the URL a Smart Chip or a Link. Clinking on the link doesn't give the option either. Do I need an extension?
Hi Mary, thank you for your question. You do not need an extension. Be sure the URL is hyperlinked. This does not work without that. Additionally, use the Share button on UA-cam to get the URL rather than the URL in the browser address bar. I hope that helps.

@@marytwillman1394 Are you sure you are single clicking? Don't double click. Besides that, be sure to clear your cache and cookies and try again.

@@flint9600 Thank you for sharing. That is an unlisted video. You cannot make Smart Chips for unlisted videos. I will add that to the video description.
I have had the same problem. Even with listed videos. Using the share button. Hyperlinked in the document. Still not Smart Chip. ua-cam.com/video/GMXLH71EIxs/v-deo.html
I have noticed that happens with a very small percentage of videos. Often times it is new videos and if I wait a few days, then they can become Smart Chips. I am not sure why this happens with a very small percentage of older videos.

I think youtube only allow the channel that have more than 40k subs to have that CHIP function, so sad :'(
That has not been my experience. I create Smart Chips for my videos regularly and I certainly don't have 40k subscribers.
