Akira is a fucking GIANT. He gets really overlooked, but if you put in perspective what he was doing at the time, you can put him on par of the greats. Fast licks, tapping, double hand tapping, sweeps, melodies and GREAT riffs. He had it all, with a great sound too.
When I first started out I worked all summer to buy a big SUNN amplifier. The volume knob was labeled LOUDNESS. Fast forward to the 80s and here comes this Japanese metal band called LOUDNESS. My friends were like "Loudness?" But I understood 😁
Akira is a bad ass. Saw them live in the 80's. Loved several of their albums. He is a genius with his solos for sure. The Solo from "No Way Out" is incredible, love it, you think its over and he keeps going. And the main riff from "Run For Your Life" is so damn cool (hard to play for me)! And don't forget that EPIC intro to "Ashes in the Sky" off Lightning Strikes! That is a masterpiece by itself imo. Tell me that doesn't get you pumped up?!
I saw Loudness on their Thunder in the East tour. I recently found the Loudness program that contained the album cover picture they signed their autographs on. Along with that, my booklet of autographs of Yngwie Malmsteen and Rising Force, Talas, Riot and Accept,(Balls to the Wall tour) and etc. Akira Takasaki is an awesome guitarist. Thanks for this Chords Play Of, David. This takes me way back to my favorite 80's era.
The other thing I love about Akira is that even though his solos are technically amazing, they're also all completely singable. I can sing all the solos from TITE by heart.
I LOVE Akira! His solo's were like Yngwie, VH, Moore & Schenker, mixed into one. His riffs were always like classic Accept, with that awesome mid paced chunk.

I got to do a show as a stage hand with Loudness at Cardis in Houston around 1986. Amazing band and amazing fun times those were. Enjoyed the times and their music and still do.
Wayback in the year 1987 when I was a young guitar nerd, I saw Loudness open for Yngwie Malmsteen as main support with TNT as the opener. I did not really care about YJM and I knew that Ronnie Le Tekro was very good, but I went to see Akira and he did not disappoint. I think I still have one of his guitar picks around somewhere; a little jazz three sized with his name on it, but spelled “Akilla”. It was cool!
I still have “Thunder In The East” on vinyl...Akira was the dude that introduced me to this little known guitar brand called ESP...they were from Japan and you never saw them in the states...I wanted one so bad...ah, those childhood memories!!
The feedback is good. Not too familiar with this outfit but some killer riffs and will certainly be scoping them out. Crazy Doctor is great fun to play . Nice one 👍🇬🇧
Akira had the best pure metal tone in the eighties. A lot of it had to do with the way he picked the strings, kinda a quasi pinch harmonic style, only with chords rather than single notes. Great stuff.
I saw Loudness back up Motley Crue in 1985 ... Akira was the better player that night but Motley Crue owned the arena ... Akira’s solo spot was incredible ... the first time I saw a player using looping for backing tracks to solo against in a live setting ... up the irons mates !!!
Akira deserves much more recognition than he has gotten in America. Few guitar players with his shredding talent have the ability to make interesting music for decades the way he has. Most run out of ideas after a few albums. Absolutely, you should do more lessons that focus on Akira.
Japan has given us some serious talent over the years. Akira is a well-respected influence all around the world. Galneryus is another top-level metal band from Japan. My favorite is LOVEBITES. Miyako and Midori are the new heavy-hitters in the metal guitar world! Miyako was born in Osaka, back in 1990. Must be something in the water out there!

Thank you!!! Love Akira’s playing. Glad you gave some love to the early Japanese releases. Was turned on to Loudness by a Japanese classmate in high school back in 85-86. Some of his best leads are in the outros of songs like Clockwork Toy.

Thanks for expanding on Akira’s technique... really insightful and informative. I’ve been a huge fan of his style and tone since hearing TITE, back in the 80’s. I’m my opinion, a number of his riffs and solos are some of the best ever put out there

Seen - Loudness in the Crow bar , Sydney , 2 years ago ! , Shame , Munetaki Higushi has passed on . An in gredible drummer !! , 3 piece Dynamo . The sound in the room was pumping with huge bass ,,Big drums and heavy over driven tones and screeching lead breaks , Legends of power rock n Metal ! ( lightening strikes ! )
Saw this band at Harpo's in Detroit it was a midweek show they were going to warm up for motley Crue that weekend I believe. Hardly anyone was there and I got to stand about 10 ft away from the guitar player the whole night. They sounded great live.
@@ChangGang I heard the same thing and didn't have to go to a jam packed Joe Louis arena to see them two days later either. Loudness was really hustling playing local venues in between their motley shows.
I was lucky enough to see Loudness for my 21st birthday in Tokyo at the Budokan and hang with the band after the show. Mike Vescera was the lead singer at the time. I had heard and owned Thunder in the East but I became a huge fan after that show. Great work covering Akira's technique. It would be great if you could cover more of Loudness stuff. As a suggestion, could you do an episode on X-Japan covering Hide and Pata's guitar work?
There are soo many Other ryhthym parts that Akira incorporates which makes him probably the most underrated rhythm player of All time~ he just gets props for his solos but it's Much More than THAT~ Great video,. I wish you'd do More on his uncanny Rhythm and pinch technique,. NO guitar player incorporates Evert facet of Rock Guitar player in a musical fashion BETTER than Akira~

"Crazy Nights" is one of my all-time favorite riffs. And Akira's tone is absolutely vicious!
It's what I refer to as an intimidation tone!
Akira's tone on this and Warren DeMartini's on the 1st 2 full Ratt albums are what made me want to learn to play.

The trick to this riff is to really slice into those chords... especially that quick opening A to F# (that harmonic growl is the key to Akira's tone).
