All four albums mentioned here are ingrained in my memory from back in the day. John Norum leaving Europe in late 1986 was quite a shock, but learning that he was quickly assembling his own band was a comfort. I was buying tons of European music magazines at the time, being a 13 year old music nut. One of the magazines I always bought was Okej, a Swedish music rag with lots of great content with the artists of the day, obviously including Europe. Apart from covering Europe generously, they also had some great articles on John Norum, whom they followed closely during the recording of Total Control, as well as the following solo tour he did with Gøran Edman on vocals and Marcel Jacob on bass, formerly of Yngwie Malmsteen´s Rising Force. Norum sings most of the songs on Total Control himself, while Edman steps in on a couple of the vocally more challenging numbers. David Brewster is right about Total Control, it´s a gem of an album. As for Europe I personally prefer Out Of This World from 1988 with Kee Marcello on guitar. It´s absolutely flawless and jam packed with great tunes. Oddly enough, Marcello second (and last) album with the band, 1991´s Prisoners In Paradise, is arguably their worst. It´s shockingly bad, mainly due to uninspired songwriting and the band going through an epic identity crisis at the time. The early 1990s weren´t kind to most of the titans of the preceding decade.
Europe are a monster band Dave and highly underrated...and also a killer live band! Thanks so much for doing this, please do more as you’ve only scratched the surface...
What an absolute revelation. I only know Final Countdown by this band and always thought they were a bit naff but have enjoyed this chord play more than any other ! The examples were all really good fun to play and each had something a bit cheeky going for it . This is at least the third time those Orion type intervals have featured . If he keeps this up I am in danger of actually knowing what I am doing. Best chord play yet in my humble opinion. It can only be bettered by a Gillan chord play featuring ……. Bernie Torme 😝🇬🇧
Great lesson Dave . I checked out the Kee Marcello reh video and was amazed how much he uses his 2nd finger, where most guitarists use fingers 1&3. This gives him an extra finger to work with. Very cool . From New Zealand
Nice! Norum was a huge break "shadowing" the maistro in sweden back then...way different players but really cool to hear that solid rock Norum riffin. Marcello its a beast...that 89 show here in chile were he blows everybody...google that in youtube...it was a festival for TV...very poppy and europe just shredded everything and literally girls crying cause of carrie. Marcello actually stayed over a frienda house on that tour...close family...and my friend got 5 days of free guitar lessons from him...i actually saw the copy book marcello wrote for him. crazy stuff!
Great job, David. I could've watched you play these songs all day! I really enjoyed their 'Start from the Dark' album and there are some worthwhile chord-plays on there, if you get a chance to give it a listen.
Awesome, John Norum is one of my favorite guitar players! Hopefully one day you can make a video on how you keep your strat in tune! 👍🎸 keep up the great work!
I bought Europe's debut album a couple of weeks ago. Used to own it back in the day but I sold my copy in the mid 90's and haven't really heard it since then. These days I mostly listen to the reunion albums, since they're a better match for my musical taste, but there's some quality stuff on the earlier ones as well. Both Norum and Marcello are fantastic players. I prefer the (later) Europe albums with Norum over the Marcello albums, but as guitarists I respect them both equally.
Finally somebody know and talk about total control it s amazing album . eternal flame and back on the street cover is killer. Also talking about back on the street how about vinnie vincent invasion chordplay
Thanks David. What a great band. John's solo in "Rock the Night" is fearsome! Great players both John and Kee. Got buried by the Bon Jovi comparisons but had so much more going on. Not sure if you have already, but imo an unsung player is Carlos Cavazo obviously of Quiet Riot and later Ratt fame. Any chance of some Carlos?
Late night, check out the bands REBEL, Z.A.R albums. I know you can't wait for the new Nightranger album coming out in august you better grow your 80's mullet back for that Nightranger concert. LA GUNS came out with a new LIVE album 2021 and Tracii Guns has some Randy Rhoads licks that you can make a video lesson on how Tracii Guns uses Randy Rhoads scales and sequencing licks.
Great stuff. The last couple of albums are actually really good. Johns riffing is super cool and Joeys singing is better now then back in the day! Check them out Dave!
Great players, but I prefer Norums feel. Don’t forget that Joey Tempest wrote almost every Europe song in the 80s. ”Just the beginning” is the only exception in this video.
No, no, no. Kee and Rob are not siblings or relatives in any shape or form. Rob is one of my oldest friends and we live in the same town. They just did a thing with this “Brother” story. I believe it started with a great miss understanding and a assumption that they were brothers and went with. Ím surprised that this belief is still around 😆
I understand John is adored by many -and I totally get it! but Kee's solos are masterpieces. Just perfect. Kee is the only reason Europe made it past TFC in the late 80's early 90's. He can't write a good song and he can be a total prick but his solos are untouchable. Superstitious, More than meets the eye, Coast to coast, pretty much every single song Europe recorded with him. He also played note by note John's solos live when now even John has become very complacent with his own stuff. He improvises during Europe classic song solos and that has been a big let down for me. Just plan lazy to relearn his own stuff Europe's Bag of Bones and War of Kings are pretty good.
Note by note? That's incorrect, I recommend you to watch live footage of Ninja, wings of tomorrow, stormwind, scream of anger (with kee), even his own ready or not solo was played different in prisoners in paradise tour 1992. All of this is just because they get bored to play same thing over and over again.
John Norum, awesome guitarist, influences of Schenker and Gary Moore, very melodic guitarist, his solo work is superb! Thanks 👍
Your picking hand is amazing
Love Europe! Those first two albums especially are classics, but I still listen to their whole catalogue.

People forget that Europe had more than just “Final Countdown” great players all around in the band
Agree. They had and still have. Last three albums are great!
@@interestingthings8598 totally agree! There’s just so much to love and learn as just purely a guitar lover without even liking the band.
I wish I could forget that one too! LOL

I’m glad you did a song from Wings of Tomorrow, I’m not a big Europe fan, but I love that album.
Just love Kee Marcello Reh video... great picking chops
Both of those guys are amazing players...Great Lesson
Thanks David this is great. Yes please cover some later Europe albums they are awesome
Great video! Tomorrow i'm definitely learning On The Loose🤘🏻

Two monster players. I prefer Kee. The solos on Out of this World are insane.
Check out Norum's album Optimus - second track nailed to the cross. The solo RIPS!
Rob Marcello is an awesome player. One of the cleanest pickers out there. I’ve heard him absolutely shred on acoustic.
Great job, David. I could've watched you play these songs all day! I really enjoyed their 'Start from the Dark' album and there are some worthwhile chord-plays on there, if you get a chance to give it a listen.
The second riff sounded a bit like Scorpions "Coast to Cosst" Thank you for the lesson!
Maybe cause Michael Schenker (with Gary Moore) remains his main inspiration ? 👍
One of my favorites!
"Melt your whole family" lol!
Awesome, John Norum is one of my favorite guitar players! Hopefully one day you can make a video on how you keep your strat in tune! 👍🎸 keep up the great work!

that was fun! thanks!
Love the band! I was 11 when I heard the Final Countdown and I was immediately fond of the band, its songs and its sound. 🤘
I think "Final Countdown" is their baddest song. Epic anthem but... I only appreciate John's guitar solo !
Great lesson again... I can't wait for some Steve Rothery video ! 👍
Thanks 👍😘🇸🇪
First 2 albums masterpieces
Sorry, David. I fell behind in viewing your content!!! Catching up now!!! Anything by Europe sounds good to me! Thanks!!!!
Thanks David. What a great band. John's solo in "Rock the Night" is fearsome! Great players both John and Kee. Got buried by the Bon Jovi comparisons but had so much more going on. You are the best!!!!
Hey Dave could you do a Boston lesson
I’d love to hear Higher Power, how it’s played and how to get the tone
Cheers
Scott
Rock The Night!

Cool lesson again
Love to see a lesson on
The Darkness
Killing Joke
Ramones
Keel
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Vs Spy vs Spy
Europe filmed the video for The Final Countdown i the same arena Metallica played their last gig with Cliff Burton.
More recent stuff please!!! the Beast, Demon Head... so many to choose from
Quality as usual 👍😎 i reckon a spark amp would be better than that crappy amp🤷🙂 imao
How do I get one of those tee shirts?
Great stuff. The last couple of albums are actually really good. Johns riffing is super cool and Joeys singing is better now then back in the day! Check them out Dave!
Agree! Last three albums are awesome!
the eighties really were the "final" countdown......of shredmania.....:-)
Wings of Tomorrow is a masterpiece. Also, I discovered thin lizzys other music by hearing John Norums cover of wild one.
Total Control was a great album, but the Face The Truth album was even better.
Wow! ❤️ Go Sweden! 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Great players, but I prefer Norums feel. Don’t forget that Joey Tempest wrote almost every Europe song in the 80s. ”Just the beginning” is the only exception in this video.
Brewster rules !!!!
Its funny ...I was just watching a utube movie ... "A.I. The Final Countdown " this morning
How you doing David? How about Corrosion of conformity, yeah!
👍
Europe is also a place.
it used to be ...lol
Great lesson🤘and nice t-shirt🙂
Europe isn't a place, it's a continent made up of many countries

My guitar want's to melt yer family. That's the missing lyric, right there.
Curious what you might show us of Michael Hedges :)
