We used to use liquid fertilizer when we were row cropping. The dealer supplied us with a 900 gallon ball-type nurse tank and the chisel applicator, which was basically a 200 gallon tank on a cart with a folding tool bar on the back with knives over each row. Most of them had either squeeze pumps or John Blue adjustable displacement piston pumps. Most of the newer ones also had stainless steel tanks, but he did have a few older ones with fiberglass tanks.
One time we were fertilizing the cotton field prior to planting-- we'd usually run a hipper through the field to break up the crust from the winter and build the beds back up, then pull a tandem disk with a spray boom on it to incorporate Treflan ahead of cotton, then run the fertilizer applicator right behind that, and then run the hipper again to throw all the loose dirt thrown off the beds by the disk and fertilizer machine back up on top of the beds and we pulled rollers at the same time to roll the tops of the beds flat and firm them up for the planter. (We had used a drag harrow which did a nice job but didn't firm the beds up as good as the rollers did, which brings the moisture up near the surface for planting and quick sprouting and emergence).
So we were running this old fiberglass tank applicator through the field... it had been a wet winter and early spring and there were a lot of clods, and the tractor and machine were bouncing around pretty good because the clods of hard clay soil had dried out pretty good... I had about 150 gallons of fertilizer in the tank, and I hear something and look back and see that the end bulkhead of the cylindrical fiberglass tank has split off the center barrel section on one side, about halfway around the tank from the midpoint around the bottom of the tank, and of course it's spewing fertilizer EVERYWHERE... and there's NOTHING I can do about it... If I stop in the field, I'll end up with a dead spot where all that aqueous ammonia and phosphate slurry mix dumped in one spot, so I pop the tractor in road gear and pull the throttle wide open and race down the rows, spin around on the end because fertilizer is still gushing out the ruptured tank, and haul butt to the other end of the field. By the time I got back, the tank was empty... What SHOULD have covered probably 10 acres or so was now on about maybe a half acre at most...
It didn't kill the crop, but for a few years the cotton would get about 2 feet taller on those rows!! LOL:)

Ag systems spreaders have another adjustment that needs to be made between heavy and light materials. The spinner chute changes the position of the drop on the spinner. If it's set for one and spreading the other you may get the majority of your spread patter to one side or the other. Urea or light material will leave the spinner sooner than potash or heavy material. P.S. You should move the hitch on the spreader up to get a bit of forward tilt/level it out. Helps with the bump feed as we call it, gets the drive wheel further off of the ground wheel. I have 15 of these spreaders. Single spinner and twin spinner. And other brands also.

Looks real good, especially the rare shots of your lovely assistant. Nice to things working out so well. I've been away from the farms for a long while, but you folks remind me of the best of it. Thanks for sharing what so many never these days.

About three weeks ago a farmer down the road from me must of bumped the hyd lever or the wheel dropped some how but anyways I come up to the intersection an their is this white line about two feet across an it goes down the road about a eighth of a mile! Running his fertilizer out the back to fertilize the road!! Poor guy

Sometimes those old cylinders have leaky piston seals and will leak down while you drive, too, which is why you want to install the "lock up" when you go down the road to make sure the hydraulics don't "settle" and let the metering wheel touch the ground tire and start riding stuff out the back!
Just gotta make sure that you remove the 'lock-up' before you hit the lever to lower the wheel in the next field, so you don't rip the chain apart or bust the lockup...
Most guys get in too big a hurry and don't bother, and from time to time they end up dumping it out accidentally just like you saw...

at that rate you apply the fertilizer how fast do you go

Alex F It doesn't matter since the feeder is driven by the wheels of the spreader.

Cool we don't use spreaders we just have the elevator come out and they spread it for us with a terregator
