Fertilizer Spreader Settings | How To Calibrate Spreader For Milorganite and Other Fertilizers
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 кві 2019
- Are you using the right setting on your fertilizer spreader? In this video I'll show you an easy process so you can find out for sure by calibrating the fertilizer spreader you are using. It's always best to use a fertilizer like milorganite or something similar where we can make an application and not worry about burning the lawn if we over apply by a little bit. Once you have this process down you should be able to check the settings on the back of the bag you are using and dial in your rate according to your tests with your specific spreader.

Hey Ryan, I always add an extra pound of fert in the hopper. This ensures I have enough to actually spread evenly over a 1000sf. Then I measure the contents left over and adjust my hopper settings from there. Like you, my walking speed is pretty much set.
Very good idea
I have the same spreader and use a similar technique when spreading Milorganite. I turn the adjusting knob clockwise until there is a "pretty good hole" and fill the hopper to the brim ;)
Just ordered the same Brinly spreader and was wondering if you've used it to put down Carbon X or XGN and if so what are your setting. Much appreciated!
Its Milorganite. Organic. It wont hurt the lawn at all. Love me some of that smell. Thrown down a hole bag on my 3k sqft front yard.
It's not organic. It's human feces from a state that eats GMO food and tons of artificial crap.
What is most important is uniform coverage, and most broadcast spreaders do not throw the material uniformly (less material is delivered per square foot the further away it is thrown). Because of this fact, it is better to use a crosshatch pattern when spreading, which suggests using a lower setting on the spreader than the bag recommends as you will be walking nearly twice as far. You are right ... it is trial and error, but once you lock in a setting for a given material and spreader combo, write it down, and you won't need to measure out this material in the future before applying - just fill-up and go.
The last part of your statement was what I like. Shouldn't all bags of Milargornite come with 3 settings for a Scott's spreader. 1 each for light, medium and heavy. And the only thing that you have to measure is how many bags you will need. Just dump it in and walk at a normal pace. All of this calibrating and calculating in mind boggling.
Wife just walked by and asked, "Could it be ... the only rock n' roll lawn man I know?" Will she some day refer to me that way, Ryan? With your help ... maybe. Had to share.
Remember, when you have the left side deflector down, you end up putting down a very high quantity of the material you are spreading (in Ryan's case, Milorganite) in a small strip just to the right of the left wheel. That is because the side deflector does not reduce the amount of material being released by the rotary disk. Rather, the side deflector just directs all of the material that would have been spread to the left of the spreader to just a small strip next to the wheel.
Thanks Ryan for the great info and insight!
Your grass looks great for how early it is in the season. I bet Connor is jealous!
We’re did you get that chart? That would come in handy
Last Aussie 😁, Great instructional video Ryan. Throw Er Down.👍👍
I bought the Scott's Mini and put out Scott's DiseaseEX for greyspot. I measured out 4lbs (the curative rate per 1000 sq ft) did an edge pass and two straight passes, all gone. I used the curative rate per the bag and it took the entire bag of product to a little over 1200 sq ft. I thought it would have been a little more accurate than that!
I actually went back to the Scotts spreader after trying another brand. It’s hard to beat the edge guard and small compact frame for storage.
I agree that it's been totally fine for me for years now
Same. I look at other spreaders but my $5 garage sale Scotts spreader fits the bill for me!
@@ryanknorrlawncare What is your opinion of the Brinly you used? I just purchased that spreader.
Great video, Ryan! So glad it is warm enough to get back to working outside.
I agree! It's great to be outside again
@@ryanknorrlawncare Absolutely! Looking forward to more videos.
I can smell the success 👃🏼👍🏼
💩
So if I'm understanding this correctly, the numbers on the Scott represent lbs / 1000
So #4 would be 4 lbs / 1,000 sq.ft?
The scale’s tare button is your friend.
Milo spit the bit again this year. Switching bag sizes (thought I heard 32 and 50 now vs only 36) and now there's another shortage where I am with nothing expected to hit retailer docks for several weeks. Time to branch out to Chicorganite? Philorganite? NewYorganite?
I tried to convert as well but it disappeared from the shelves and I couldn't commit. It's availability is just too unreliable where I am.
grass is looking great!
Have the same problem with the end of the load not coming through. Annoying with a pull behind. Was thinking of maybe adding some sand or something to the top of the load to push the fertilizer all through. Or else being ready to store the left over if I overload it.
I use Dynamic Lifter in Australia. It's basically chook poo. Just chuck it out by hand. Fairly low in nitrogen it's basically just a soil improver. In spring I use urea, carefully, for its high nitrogen content. But Its almost winter here now, my perennial ryegrass has gone dormant.
Thanks for the video. I just got my order of the Brinly Hardy so the timing was perfect. Had to upgrade from my Scott’s. Edge guard control broke and was annoying to manually place every time. Then the spreader door started opening at an angle.
Good luck with the new one!
My recommended setting was 3 and a half. I think it was not enough. Should I go higher like 4 and a half?
I just put down Scotts turf builder plus dandeline control on my lawn 2 weeks ago today is it too soon for me to put Milorganite down or should I wait a couple more weeks
My bag of Miloganite said the setting should be 11 and a 1/2 for my Scott’s Turf Builder broadcast spreader and it went really fast so I cut it back to 6 and it seem to work much better
had the same problem. Bag said 12. I reduced it to 6 and just overlapped it by doing criss cross patterns. Lawn smells like shit now.
I like that Brinley...In the market to upgrade from my cheap StaGreen...I'm putting that on the shortlist
Can I just set it a to a low setting to be on the safe side?
Hay Ryan, I know this video is a year old but was surprised you had a Brinly spreader! I just ordered one and was wondering if you've used it for carbon X fert or XGn Fert and what were your settings. Great video!
Great content. Great teacher. Great video. Thanks, Ryan!
Ryan. Do you have problems with milo with small chunks getting stuck in opening. With the scotts speader that is.
Kevin, I have a Scott's spreader just like that and yes it gets stuck.
I don't seem to have much of an issue with that but in general the Scotts gets a bit jammed from time to time. I just pick it up at the end of a pass because it's so light
Ryan, do you like the Forever Green (Menards) product? This is my first year (other than last summer using Miloganite) using something other than Scott's Turfbuilder (regular). I'm trying to keep a spurge problem from sprouting so I used the Forever Green with crabgrass preventer just this past week (I'm near Chicago). This product contains the dithiopyr. Just wondering if you've used that line of product and what kinda results you've gotten.
I've just used it the fall when I'm using synthetics...seems to work fine
Sometimes id rather toss the seed by hand because the spreader never spreads it how I want. I used recommended settings last 2x and I ended up with green strips of grass in my yard (looks like how the grass grows under the septic line kinda look)
Who finally got to mow today? Me that’s who!💪🏻💪🏻
Oh yeah!
Helpful video. Thanks!
Good video Ryan. 😎👍
I like my Scott’s Mini the best. I don’t like that Earthway I got. It’s going in the garage sale this summer😀
I still like my Scott's as well
Hey buddy cool video. What are the Black squares in your garage???
Thanks 🙏
Ryan, great video, thank you
Where did you get the settings manual
I literally JUST bought the Scott's Mini just because it is the one Ryan Knorr uses. Now you have a new one, dang-it man! Seriously, I bought the mini because I want a good one but they weren't available in my store. What do you think of the Brinley?
Nothing wrong with the Scott's at all and I plan to continue to use it
How far does it broadcast when the edge guard is engaged?
Please do your neighbors yard too.
Monica McLean Fuuny
Nice video! Very informative!
Great video, Ryan!
I have the Scott's mini also but once I switched to Milo I had to upgrade to a bigger spreader because I couldn't stand how often I was refilling.
That is one downside but I'm pretty used to it at this point
I want to use this for spreading sand on pavers (for the crack-sand that goes in between paver stone driveways, patios, etc). Then I can just blow and sweep it more into the cracks. Do you think this product will work for that?
The sand would have to be completely dry but it should work if that is the case
That Brinley spreader looks cool. I've been thinking of trading up from my Scotts.
I haven't had enough apps to test it much yet but I still feel completely comfortable with my Scotts as well. Nothing wrong with it at all!
I’m a Ryan Knorr disciple! I bought myself the same Scott’s spreader and put down an application of turf builder. It worked great, where I walked. Now my yard has dark streaks showing the path I walked. Have you ever seen that? Was I walking too slow? It’s been about a week, so would it be too early to put more down and try to fill in the rest of the lawn?
See Tommy Tester's note above (and Ed K. above that). You want to set your spreader to put out the material at 1/2 the rate and do a cross-hatch pattern. Do the outside loop first maybe at 3/4 suggested setting for full coverage (to reduce over-loading material at the deflector edge). Then do the inside the loop area at 1/2 setting going north to south and then east to west. This should help get rid of "streaking" in your lawn.
Hey Ryan , what is your go to spreader????
Nice job Ryan. The only thing I don't like about milorganite is that it is hard to see. They should dye it yellow or something easier to see. 🤷♂️
It is indeed very hard to see and I dislike that as well
Connor just goes by his feelings 😀
This is true
Great video Ryan. I have a question. I have some winterizer from menards left over from last fall is it ok to use it up and put it down now? My grass is just starting to green up here in Wisconsin
Yep...the term winterizer means nothing other than it's a specific formula they believe will be best for that time of year. The stuff at the end of this video is fall lawn food from Menards 20-0-9 and that would be perfectly fine.
If anyone has this style Brinly without the Deflector you can order one through Brinly. Part Number:1007520. I think I paid $25 last year for it.
Too bad they use a deflector. An earthway spreader in the same price range closes the side hole instead, so you aren't doubling up on product on the edges of your lawn.
@ryeguy01 I agree 100 percent. However, I do believe the earthway even-flow open/shut off plate can be fitted onto the Brinly. But, now over spent and could have just bought an earthway. 👍
Nice, still have the old milo bag. It's too bad the new bags are 32 lbs and are the same price!
He Ryan love all the informative videos I'm very interested in trying hydretain this year on my lawn because I have no irrigation for a first-timer do you suggest spray or granular
Whatever you're comfortable with...I am not sure if one is better than the other
@@ryanknorrlawncare ok thanks for your help I think I'll try granular
Lawn lawn lawn!
Don’t forget, if you split the total weight into two separate measurements you have to account for the weight of the container both times, or zero out your scale.
Doesn’t matter much here but something to remember for higher concentration products
Very true..thanks for pointing that out
Nice video. Have you put down any SGS's Humic/Fulvic this year yet?
Not yet...very soon
Great tip👍🏿what brand spreader is the black one?
Grassology4610 Brinly Hardy
How do you likely the Brinley? Would you recommend?
I've only used it for a very limited time but I also really enjoy the Scotts and have been used to that for years now.
Great Vid Ryan! Where did you get that side deflector kit for the Brindley spreader. I have them same spreader but no deflector.
Try here - Brinly. Part Number:1007520
@@ryanknorrlawncare You are the Man!!! Thank You very much!
Great video👍 I been using that style Brinly for 3 years. Built solid and feels good. Only beef is with the linkage that inserts into the control lever - it is too loose and not secure. What your thoughts?
I haven't noticed an issue yet but I have very limited use
Just ordered the Brinly spreader and wondering if you've used it with Carbon X fert or XGN and what settings are you using. Much appreciated!
A. Atta the setting will be different between us because we probably wont walk at the same speed. And X green will be a different setting from Carbon X because they are different prill sizes. Sorry I couldn’t be much help. 😎👊
About 4 minutes into this what book is they your looking at?
Can you add this weed killer at the same time or add weed killer then 2 weeks later add the fertilizer let weeds die off?
Did the Brinley spreader come with that manual.
Yes
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care awesome thx
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care my neighbor has this spreader if I have any questions using it can I reach out to you via email.
Very nice early greenup on the new lawn. Is that all Ryegrass or did you have some bluegrass in there as well?
Probably 80/20 ryegrass to bluegrass
@@ryanknorrlawncare I have an all Elite Bluegrass lawn now and looking to add some ryegrass in the fall to help with an earlier green up in the spring. What be some other benefits to adding some ryegrass? I want to be sure to avoid any of that clumping grass....guessing that what I am referring too is a fescue.
Hey Ryan, Great Video. Where did you get the book with all those spreader settings for all those different products
haccprof it comes with the Brinly Hardy spreader. Just bought one last week and found it very useful.
Correct it's in the manual that came with the Brinly
Gave thumbs down. You didn’t show how to adjust (calibrate) the opening and by how much.
Hell, I need a college degree to understand this! Wait! I actually have TWO college degrees and I fly for a living. I am still confused!
8th! My Scotts spreader died last year..literally on last run on my last app for the year! 😀 Looking for a new spreader for 2019, will be heading to Fleet Farm this weekend to see what they have. Did you like the Brinley?
What happened to the Scotts? I have had mine now for 8-9 years I think....just curious there.
I haven't done enough testing to know yet. I'm so used to the Scotts.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care The plastic gear wore out. I got about 15 seasons use out of it, so it was time. RIP 😀
lowes is having sale this weekend. your scotts spreader for 19.99 reg 35.00 great deal , i usually use my hand held spreader, but couldn't pass up this deal.
That's a pretty good run for a cheap spreader
What if you have a 500 sq ft worth of grass to fertilize? How would you calculate how much fertilizer one needs to throw down?
just throw er down!
Measure your yard length times width to get the square footage
@@LawnAmateur lol..he already said 500sq.
Not First, but definitely a 8.5 guy
Nice video but how do you know where to set a Scott’s edgeguard? Numbers don’t match up to the spreader you were using or a higher end spreader.
Where does the 100 come from in the calculations?
We are looking at the percentage of nitrogen inside of the bag so that would be out of a total of 100 percent. If you have a 21-0-0 then 21% of that bag is nitrogen and 100/21 would easily give you how many pounds of that product you would need to put down 1 pound of Nitrogen onto the ground
What’s underneath the car cover a Camaro I hope
Challenger
With my logic, the hopper does not know how much lbs you put in. All it knows is what it's calibrated at to throw the appropriate amount. So with the right calibration, walking speed, etc... would you not naturally put down the correct amount of lbs on the ground regardless of how much was in the hopper assuming there was enough to walk the entire lawn? Worst case you have left over product in the hopper that you would re-bag.
I'm not certain there...the size of the fertilizer will make a difference as well
yeah FERT
The edge guard blocks it from throwing to the left. You walked the wrong way!
On the Scott's that I have it's on the right
Omg
3
Scott spreaders leave lines. I hate them
The neighbor's yards all look like shit compared to your's LOL.
