I painted my first mini (3D printed by a friend) with a 4€ 12 set of 14ml acrylics with included brushes (usable) and palette (useless plastic waste, made a wet palette out of a plastic lid and some kitchen roll). It turned out fine, if a bit glossy.
@@RisingApe yep, I did! I think you're right, this coming recession is going to choose some new winners and losers in the art and hobby worlds. I wonder if we're going to see a split between luxury priced products only being bought by childless adults, with families opting for more base priced products? I'm glad you got these M&S paints to work well. Fighting bad products can kill your motivation, so I'm glad these are decent.
I think this video was a good example why to keep that brush, a new paints are always different so it's better to test it out with an old brush that you don't need to worry about. I like these videos, I keep looking at Golden High Flow when I'm at the art store now.
I'm new too painting, like anything. I found these easier to use than than citidel paints but I use a combo. I use the cidital shades and contrasts on top off this paint. Wet them a little, and they work as contrast for some things. I also like the earthing less cartoons colors. I do like cartoons stuff too but I went gritty for my first stuff. Colors don't match the tube much. Not a bigger. Great paint for beginners cause, it works, it works aloooot better than the 50 cent Walmart paints and for a newbie it works just as well but a fraction of the price as citidal paints.
100% I use folk art and a box of acrylics that I got on Amazon for 25 bucks with 32 colors to get my feet wet doing this. You also I think learn a lot using these cheaper tools. Less fear of wasting a 9 dollar bottle of paint. Or ruining a 15 dollar brush. Great advice!
Yeh, I feel the same, you learn most by practicing, anything that stops you doing that is a bad thing. Buy cheap paint.. paint a lot… get better. Cheers for watching
Would you consider a folow up vid to this one where you show some different options for giving that glossy finish a matte varnish? Thank you for what you do 😄
I've been using craft acrylics for a long time - mostly Anita's, Americana and Deco Art for 15mm and 28mm historical wargame figures and I'm quite happy with them. I also use Pro Acryl, Vallejo, AK, Scale 75 etc, so I admit I'm a bit of a paint slut. However, if you're on a limited budget, craft paints are just the job. A point worth mentioning though Is that 'artist' quality acrylics really do give rich, vibrant and accurate colours and if you're going for System 3 or W&N you're only paying around 50% more than, say, Vallejo for a life time's supply of paint. I dont get much time too watch these channels regularly, but Rising Ape is a little gem. Thank you.
i´m about to get into miniature painting and tabletop gaming with star wars shatterpoint or legion and i already have these in hand as i´ve used them for figure customs or acrylic paintings before but i wasn´t sure about them on miniatures and i didn´t want to spend quite a lot of money on good mini paints or just get the basic mini paint set cheaper and having to mix a lot of colors to get the ones i need for each mini, alongside primers, brushes, clear coats, model glue and all that, so knowing they can be used just fine is a relief hahahah now i just need to solve the problem of: how do i prime the minis considering i don´t think i have enough space outside to avoid toxic fumes or paint getting all over me or the place i´m spraying them on and i don´t have the skill to make a painting booth and buying one online is expensive, plus brush on primers aren´t the best option either
Can you please explain breaking point? I mean I see the color getting more and more transparent as it is more water and less paint in the mix you are spreading thinner but what does that mean? Shouldn’t I expect that with every paint?
The breaking point is the point where the pigment and the binders began to separate. So the paint doesn’t hold together as well. Every paint has a breaking point it’s not even necessarily a bad thing but pigment dense paints will hold together longer. Try an experiment like I did with cheaper craft paints you will see what I mean.
Do you have a colour scheme in mind? Personally if you want metallics I would go with Vallejo Metal Colour, I have never found a better metallic. I use Duraluminium and then tint with an ink when I need to.

Exactly you don’t need all the gear for decent models
These are not just craft paints... these are M&S craft paints.
Sorry, couldn't resist. I'll now watch the video!
Haha, you better watch it all the way after that 🤣

@@Mikey__R I really hope not but it’s always great to have more options at least
this content is so helpful man ! when talented artists test paints is provides so much information!
Thanks, I am glad I could help

Yeh I remain a big fan of these, plus I can get my kids involved without stressing about them”wasting” more expensive paints

Hey that's the paint I use :)
It looks like you're using the Artist grade paint, not Caft (Craft
Yeh you’re not wrong, it’s really good, paint but at craft paint prices. I use it all the time but generally for backdrops and terrain
Very cool !
Thanks
I see that brand on amazon when I go searching for other paints they DON'T carry. Thanks for testing them out for us.
That may have been how I found them!

I would consider that for sure, or jump onto my Discord, and next time I have matte varnish out I will pop it over the model I painted
I have now popped a photo onto my discord :)
I really appreciate the explanation, I knew none of those details,
Which bits in particular, it’s always useful to know what folks like?

Thanks, that’s really kind, the biggest issue with artist acrylics is the glossier finish. Nothing you can’t fix with a bit of matte varnish though.
Nice overview dude 😊 always interestkng to learn more about paint brands and properties!
Cheers Dene, glad you enjoyed it
Your channel is incredible!!

Priming is ideal sure, but again, you can skip it, just paint using black craft paint first. As long as it’s thinned you will be fine.
Great vid, thanks
