- In this week's guitar lesson, you'll learn how to connect 3 triads to play a 1-4-5 chord progression in the same area of the fretboard. You can easily move this shape up or down the neck to play it in any key. Perfect for blues, country, bluegrass, or rock.

NOW THIS is a helluva Lesson. Looks like something NICE to play with.
Learning songs using triads is the best way to learn guitar. Thanks.
Brian, I’ve had a lot “a-ha” moments watching your videos, but this was a big one. I’ve seen guys seemingly okay I-IV-V without hardly moving their left hand, but I never could crack it.
Thanks as always! That guitar is a gem as well!
Excellent video! I love the way you teach. One of the best guitar teachers on UA-cam.
played guitar most of my life ....wow where was this 40 yrs ago!!! very basic yet absolutely spot on...esp. "caged" application(s)!!
Thanks Man!!
Every single idea you explain, got some other sidebars you point... you make me think...
Little lightbulbs all the time.
All related in context on the practical example we are in, so it's easily understood.
Came here for the Triads, and now I can see the basic CAGED idea, so I can try to continue by myself. Brilliant on you.
I appreciate you offer naked raw sound over basic classic stuff. No ultra Gain and crazy solos to impress us.
Congratulations and thank you very much 'caballero'.
Figuring out triads on this string set (2.3.4) opened up a lot of possibilities for me. I can play in any key in a jam, and they are great for uke or a tenor guitar tuned in DGBE. Your lessons have been a great help to me.
The chord diagrams were so helpful to picture the six chords to use and all contained in the one zip code. One area yet so much info mileage that came with it. You are a gift that keeps giving.
Someone finally putting this into a format that is easy to understand & expand on . Thanks again.
Great lesson to bring in the New Year , wishing all you pickers a blessed 2022
Good to see the Chord Diagrams displayed... helps a lot!
This helped me learn how Chris Stapleton plays Blue Side of the Mountain! Thanks for another great lesson.
I've been looking all over UA-cam for a lesson on connecting scale shapes to CAGED shapes. And I can think of no better teacher. So, Brian, if you find yourself looking for a lesson idea....
But, yeah this one is great! I've been playing around with this but having the 4 and 5 spelled out like this is SO helpful! Thanks and God bless!
Awesome thank so much! I'm 48 and trying to learn more than I did when I was 14.
Same 😊
Me too!!! Well 49 here. But I still feel like I'm 48
@@dangquesadilla yep. We’re staring 50 right in the eye
The lessons are incredible. I will be subscribing to active melody this year
52 and starting to play alot better too!
Thank you! P.S. You can teach an "Old Dog new tricks lol ..
Great stuff. The CAGED system is so good, lots of things to use it for. The idea of a I IV V progression is gold. It's in everything. Gospel, blues, so many things. Learn these chords in every key, you won't be sorry
Triads and "zip codes" on the fretboard were a great eye-openers for me. No one else explains it better than you, Brian! Great lesson, as always :)
Perfect New Year's gift for me! Am a later starter, middle aged and now above all HAPPY!
Thanks Brian .....Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year....God bless you and your family...you are doing a great job teaching people like us all over the world. You tips and tricks and your lessons go unsurpassed...in my opinion you are the best teacher on U Tube...no one to beat you.
What all I have learnt is from your U Tube lessons ..... Your well crafted lessons are just amazing..easy to understand..and play. Thank you once again.....🙏😊
Thank you good sir for not only teaching amazing lessons but for teaching a person to become an actual guitar player....I truly enjoy learning new things from you and you for sure have a great way of explaining!
That's why I love P90s so much, the perfect balance between a single coil and a humbucker! Sweet tone with a touch of growl.
Great lesson thanks. Playing this on my holidays.
Just incredible lessons in every way ... you are an asset to every guitarist learning their instrument ... your ability to communicate and make it easy to understand is "top-shelf" ... thank you very much!!
I’ve struggled with triads for yrs Great help
I posted yesterday but I’m back because after playing for a few hours after watching your video last night I was overwhelmed. It finally made sense to me. I can’t believe nobody told me this before all those years I spent noodling around hoping I’d find some pattern or secret. Once I understood the triads I applied them all over the neck and now I can play anywhere in any key anytime no matter what chords are going on I know where to go. Let me tell you that knowing where to go from your lesson is the greatest thing I ever learned on guitar. Triads. Once you learn them you will get it. Watch this video 10 times if you have to once it makes sense you’re going to kick yourself in the butt and want back all those years you spent trying to figure things out.
Thanks Brian. The chord graphics really helped me!
Greetings from Aus. Fantastic. This lesson has recalibrated my Brain!
Love the way you teach and play . Very easy to follow your teaching .
What a bloody brilliant lesson. Have learnt so much from your lessons on unlocking keyboard.
Great lesson, Brian!
So many talk about triads and I was none the wiser until I saw your video, you make sound so easy and straight forward. Now I’m gonna try it see how I get on.
That there folks, is gold 👌
Brian, that was so awesome. I wished I learned that 40 years ago. Such a simple approach to the 1,4,5 plus some neighboring chords and can be applied to any key. Awesome! Thank you!
awesome awesome....now i need to spend time figuring out the scales below the chords, and start going on some journeys : )
you are very creative and the triads give us sort of a break from playing the whole chords all the time and like you we can create some neat little licks off of them...thanks for keeping things simple...good teaching...
Thanks Brian, I signed up a couple months ago. I have learned more in two months than the last 40 years. On your Theory class now.
I LOVED!! that little lesson..more please
Thank you Great lesson!
Another great lesson, thank you.
Great lesson explaining triads
I never had so many good instructors !
So useful and yet obvious. Thank you again for pointing it out. Excellent teaching Brian!
I like your lessons, they take me out of my comfort zone which is more power chord rock. Keep up the good work and thanks!
Excellent lesson, Sir! Thank you and happy new year!
A lot of really valuable (made very easy to follow - and actually learn) instruction, for Anybody at any level!
Thank you very much for taking time to create this little jewel!!
Happy New Year everyone! Yet another great lesson Brian. The chord diagrams are a great addition and will be helpful. Relating the shapes to the caged system is important as well. Keep up the good work.
love these triad lessons, helped me very much. Happy New year Brian.
This is so useful :)
That’s really cool! Great lessons
Hey Brian, hit the nail on the head for me here! Thanks! I am learning so much I don’t always have the practice time to try it out, but just listening, when I can’t practice, builds my knowledge base, thank you.
Another great lesson 👍
Thanks. This lesson broadens what I have been working on. I discovered and have been playing with 3 triad forms on the DGB strings for a while now. I find it very useful on the tenor guitar I sometimes play. Now at a jam session (acoustic blues) I can play basics in any key they call the song. It has turned out to be very easy to finger pick and to add 7th & 6th embellishments in this small string set, too. I do hope you do more lessons on this string set.
Oh! Very interesting and cool ! The seemingly simple chord formation gives lot of confidence to beginners! Thank you for a good lesson !
the power of triads and inversions, nice :)
another fantastic lesson - unlocked some very basic things I kind of knew but never linked up. thanks!
Nice lesson. I love to learn stuff that's easy to absorb and that I can use right away. Thank you and Happy New Year.
I think you are a fantastic teacher ! Love it
Great lesson. I've done this for years but until now I really never totally understood what I was doing. The first lick is what I used for Son Of A Preacher Man.
Thank you. Just thank you, sincerely.
Happy new years Brian.... ty 4 everything
Thanks so much!
Happy New Year to you!
Thanks for the awesome lesson and new guitar mind set!
Brian the Master.
Self taught, been playing 50 years, and finally a light bulb went off! Thanks. Maybe now I can finally make progress.
wonderful, thank you very much !so helpful !
Great lesson Brian. Happy New Year.
Love the Blues.
Very enlightening video. It made me think even more.
Brilliant Brian thanks for sharing.
this is exzactly what iv been trying to get to GOD LIGHT BULB this is game changer got to gets some lesson's going thank you so much just bright-in up my weekend . had a terable week till now thank you
great lesson. thanks
Thanks a Lot. Right on time for my journey. 🤙🤙
Brilliant, talk about that light bulb moment. Now I get it and I'm so grateful to you. Have a really happy new year.
Beautiful lesson.
Very nice Brian and sounds great. Happy New year 🎇
Great lesson, sir! Thank you.
This really helped . Thank you Brian.
Oh man there's so much to get out of this one! I *think* that I might be able to get the notes of various triads into my head from maybe just noodling these up and down the neck while calling out the notes from the basic form out loud..... Yea hell I'd probably get the notes from the 3rd string in my head on top of that. Damn who said there isn't any short cuts to get intimate with, what for me is Deep, theory detail applicable to tons of additional goodness. Thank you.....
Very helpful, thanks!
This is a masterpiece
Excellent lesson
I understand a reason you chose this V (5) chord is partly to keep everything on that 9h fret position (also other cool stuff). Folks might like to know another easy 5 chord from this E is D string 9th fret, G - 8th fret, B - 7th fret. That shape has a lot of possibilities too.
Great lesson!
Brilliant...Thank you!
Brian, there are several ways to approach guitar playing and teaching guitar. The way you explain and demonstrate works well for me. Maybe it’s the level I’m at (CAGED understanding is huge), and maybe it’s the way I think. I just enjoy the way you can make it fit. 👍
Excellent. Thanks.
Great lesson! That B7, is the chord used in intro , " paper in fire".- mellencamp
Great stuff!
Thankyou , goes so well with my triade work 🇦🇺 scott
Wow! Very cool
Love this!!!
Happy New Year Brian. Thanks for the mandolin tune. Bravo!!!!. Ellen and Fran
I would also suggest EP356 which kinda does this in 3 different positions on the neck in the Key of G.
There’s so much quality in these lessons I find it really enjoyable to go back to ones I “learnt” years ago - and this time do it properly ( or at least better than I could back then!). EP356 here I come again. 😀
Also try this 1-4-5 microlesson if you haven't, it's pure gold and in the same spirit! ua-cam.com/video/YpHT2qXsALU/v-deo.html
Very efficient lesson. I have just sent it to some of my electric guitar students.. thanks !
Thanks Brian Thought I understood the 1 4 5 in the first half of the lesson and then had one of those light bulb moments in the second half
Brilliant Brain thanks
Wow ,a clean look.
Wow cela m'ouvre un autre éventail de jeux, thanks.
Awesome great music song playing guitar 🎸 Happy new year
Tremendous. I'm from Australia, and play pubs with just chords. If I play solo I usually can't put much in for the fills. However, Brian has so many ideas. Working off the "front edge" of the A bar..... and the notes around the D triad. Ill try and spice up my chord fills with some of this stuff. Hard without a bass or other guitarist but this here is good stuff. Thanks Brian
What kind of songs do you play ,? And I said that with an aussie accent, ,love that out bak
