I started drinking alcohol years ago as a teenage, spent my whole life fighting alcohol addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.
I love hearing great life changing stories like this. I want to become a mycologist because honestly mushrooms are the best form of medicine (most especially the psychedelic ones) There are so many people today used magic mushrooms to ween off of SSRI medication- its amazing! Years back i wrote an entire essay about psychedelics. they saved you from death buddy, lets be honest here.

Yes he's Predroavaro a professional mycologist. My daughter did straight shrooms in few days. Made her whole! after words, no more addictions, pains, ptsd and depression. It helped us.
Nice video, and good you made such decision. I quit alcohol almost 6 months ago and it is been the best thing I have ever done for me. Feeling and looking great and better every day. Total life changer. Alcohol is poison, the problem is that it has become such a norm in our culture to the degree that it is weird not to drink it. When you step outside of this nonsense bubble, you start to see alcohol as a collective insanity.
@@treynoldsman1981 Thats because you believe that alcohol provides you with fun, probably since you were 14-15 years old, in Mexico also we are raised like this. You don't need to be numb to have fun, alcohol only makes you stupid, not fun. You gotta grow and lear how to have a with time without it and also look for fun plans that don't involve alcohol as the main objective of the plan, plans in nature, fitness, travels, hiking, sports, etc. That also goes along with a switch in the social circle you move, because if you always hang out with people that gets wasted as an objective, you are gonna have a hard time quitting.
Most people FAIL at "quitting drinking, because they are focused on "quitting drinking". This is the biggest roadblock to recovery. I've met hundreds of people who show up on the doorstep of sobriety, with a desire to stop drinking, but NO desire to address the root problem...SELF. They want the maximum benefit, with the LEAST amount of effort. THAT was ME! The moment I accepted that I had to start living differently, was the moment I began to recover. Congratulations on your channel Becky Spelman. Meanwhile in response to the post above , thank you for his appreciation, insights and sober observations about alcohol-ism and the false notion of quitting ( I agree with him) Trotting behind him, 26 years sober, having tried abstinence, control drinking and bursts of dry time, I realised, that I was dependent on alcohol and that notions of “quitting” Was wrong-headed, because alcohol , in the first instance , was only the symptom to a deeper issue, which I masked with self medications, including alcohol drugs dysfunctional relationships ,before a sugar addiction needed addressing!. 30 years clean is amazing but 30 years sober, is exceptional and your channel has attracted this exceptional . Congratulations again ( I’m from Ireland as well)
50 days sober. Never going back. Told my dad the other day and he was like, "Why? You're not that bad with drink are you?" He carried on like he was trying to talk me out of it. I can literally moderate my use of ANY other drug - weed, uppers, opiates, trips etc. but i've NEVER been able to do that with alcohol. I've been a problem drinker for over a quarter of a century. The 'social conditioning' (brainwashing) is so strong in people that they literally try to talk you out of stopping using one of, if not the most, harmful intoxicating substance there is. It's madness.
I've pretty much given up, apart from the odd celebration (weddings, Christmas) after being a committed weekend wine drinker for 20 years (at least a bottle a night Friday and Saturday) I feel so much better mentally and physically. I just dont crave it at all anymore...you realise it's basically just sedating you with the knockon effect of being more agitated when it wears off. Trying to get some loved ones to cut back but it's difficult until you see it for what it is. Not going back. My sleep is also better than it has ever been and stress/anxiety much diminished. Best way to relax is to just breathe deeply and meditate...no need for alcohol as it ultimately has the opposite effect. I wish i had realised this sooner but that's life!
I listed out the pros and cons of drinking alcohol for me. There were 2 things in the pros list which were more fun and more social. There were 44 things in the cons list, like days wasted from hangovers, depression, anxiety, embarrassment, expensive, dangerous, etc, etc
What's concerned me is only having done 1 sober month in the past 8 years along with a few 1-2 week bouts. Currently on a sober week but this time in the mindset of climbing a new mountain of life, not taking a break. The benefits are incredible and the last times I drank revealed even in the drinking how it no longer was aligning with what I wanted in life. It's like something changed to the point of even drinking feeling different and strange.
Hello! Thank you for this video! I'm glad to see you again. I am 33 and I have always refused to drink alcohol. I don't like it. So I NEVER drink alcohol. It doesn't make me a good or perfect person, however, I'm really proud of myself...
Thank you so much for such an open hearted testimony!! I am Spanish and some of my best friends are Irish. We all share the "alcohol culture" that you mentioned. And you pointed it so beautifully acurated: as soon as you make the decition for yourself, based on your own reasons (whichever they are), you see that actually the world around you respond positively or they don´t even notice it. It´s all about us individuals. When we make a positiv desition for our mental and body health there is nothing external that can stop us, only we can put stones on our path. Thank you again Dr. Spelman
I am so glad I found your videos on alcoholism! Not only am I dating a severe alcoholic, but I am sober. My sobriety began two years ago after my divorce. I told myself "sober until it's over." I was never a heavy drinker anyway due to trauma of relationships surrounding alcohol. And I wasn't expecting to attract an alcoholic... your video on that hit the nail on the head because our first few months dating were sober dates. They recently declared they have to work on themselves. While it's great and I support it, I'm not too hopeful for change. I'm trying to stay neutral because giving rewards for their efforts or purchasing non alcoholic beer for them became a form of enabling. I see him as a sick person now. I do not pity him and I still love him very much, but I found myself becoming extremely codependent and obsessive to help him change because it was triggering my nervous system. Now, I am focusing on myself and my own happiness. And this is the end of our road. Should he make necessary changes for himself, that's one thing. Should he try to quit for me... no... it will never work. He has to do it for himself. It would be like him trying to help me lose weight... it's up to me to put in the effort and do the work to see the results. He can encourage me, but he can't lift the weights for me. Anyways... love your work!
I wish my husband would quit. I've been sober for almost 8 months. I slipped last week, and it was horrible 😢. I have no desire for it, I was very angry and didn't cope well. He's not horrible or anything, but he drinks beer daily, smokes, ( I put cigarettes down along with beer) and doesn't eat that healthy. I'd like him to get healthy, but you're right, he has to do it for himself. We were drinking buddies, so the dynamics of our lifestyle have changed, I have come to Jesus, and my life is much calmer and healthier. Someone had to jump through the hoop first. Hopefully , he'll follow soon, or slow down immensely. Take care! 😊

10:54 Yep, I love this bit. My first time being sober in a social situation where I would normally be drinking it felt like I was cheating the system. Not being impaired is my favourite high now.
Really good video, very enjoyable. I suffered from loneliness so would gravitate to the pub daily, on the pretext of using their Wi-Fi, I would have 2-3 pints and be useless in afternoon. I’m attempting to totally change my life .. homewise, health wise, relationship and career wise done the home before Xmas, health going well then start career change in April … having withdrawal symptoms from stopping drinking now drinking 3l of water a day. Good inspiration
My only benefit to drinking is enjoying wine with food and that is hard to replace or replicate. But it is sparkling water for me at the moment and I am concentrating on the benefits of not drinking alcohol and am putting in some research on non alcoholic wines! They are getting better and no doubt will continue to improve as the demand is there and growing.
Same! That was the biggest hurdle for me too. I honestly love the taste of pairing a good wine with food. There are some good NA wines coming out. Try Class M Planet by Australian winery Konpira Maru. Tastes similar to a Pino noir, maybe a gamay. Not sweet at all, lots of tannins.
Irelands drinking culture is really thick over here. I have been able to make the decision to just stop drinking all together to see what happens. Honestly I am just sick and tired of not being productive because I dont feel good after a night out or what ever. its stupid and I dont want to feel like that anymore. Im done.
Allen Carrs easy way to control drinking… made it so easy for me(a former daily drinker) to quit. In my 60’s and didn’t get drunk in decades but noticed I would get tired soon after I would start to drink. I wish I would have quit years ago! I think I was self medicating my undiagnosed adhd, before getting diagnosed and prescribed proper meds. Life so much better without the poison😊 on a side note … the background music makes it a hard listen for my brain🤷♂️ I don’t understand why so many youtubers do this🤓
Good video. It’s difficult to see ourselves. You obviously had issues with alcohol. It’s often hard to admit when we have an issue. Hopefully after that incident your friend saw he had a problem. All those studies about wine being ‘good’ for you are b.s. Neuoscientist Andre Huberman has a two hour video on what happens when we pour ethanol down our throats. It’s rather alarming and has kept me committed.
So true. There are NO benefits to drinking. Im in the US. My sister quit 5 yrs ago. My 20 yr old granddaughter and her husband dont drink. My son and I quit over a mo. ago. My daughter and her 20 yr old son still drink. I really wish they would quit. They take it the excess too often.
Congrats! I’m 112 days alcohol free and it’s been great. Made the decision like your friend who didn’t have a problem. One comment that you said that I need to challenge you on is that “the non alcoholic drinks taste exactly the same as alcoholic drinks “. Totally NOT true!! They are good, but let’s be clear and honest about it. For those who are contemplating either buying those NA products or for those who are contemplating the decision to stope drinking, the NA drinks are good substitutes but they DO NOT taste exactly the same. Let us be clear and honest about this. Thanks!
I've stopped drinking this past summer. At least a wine box a week. , 4 months it'll be 1 year without a drink. Do I miss it, yes. Do want one now, yes. You I want to go to the store and buy something, hide it, drink it wo anyone knowing, no
Still not drinking. Cravings comes and goes. Im losing sleep bc now im sober, wide awake at nights listrn to my wife snoring. Been awake since 430am!!!!!!!
I think it’s so interesting how some people try to feed drinks to other people and then get kind of upset when they say ‘ no thank you’. I honestly think a lot of people are actually jealous of other’s sobriety because it’s a hard thing to do. Getting drunk is a slut 😂
I think people who get offended by this feel like they're subtly getting "judged" by non-drinkers for drinking or being irresponsible (even if they aren't).
One thing I seldom hear about is the way alcohol impacts older people. I am speaking how the body becomes rather intolerant of it.....I cannot enjoy and liquors without starting to feel bad, nauseous, tired. So, I decided to stick with white wines. I can’t stand beer, or the smell. It’s very odd, but even wine is losing any appeal. I don’t like people topping off my wine either, I dumped it in the plant next to me. Good grief!
60+ yrs old and smacking a 6 pack of high strength beer every night for 25 years. I quit almost 3 months ago because of the same thing. It was sour in my mouth, acid reflux ruining my night and I became resentful that I couldn't fit a nice meal into my bloated tummy. I haven't looked back.
Last time I drank about 2 weeks ago on vacation I noticed how pissed off I was becoming and alcohol had never made my an angry person. Since then I don’t even want to figure out how I’d react to it, didn’t need motivation, videos. None of it, I realized how it was messing up my vacation with my girlfriend and immediately wanted that aspect of my life gone
I have a hard time turning down alcohol in social situations (I live in the Netherlands and alcohol culture is big here). I can't handle it and I always get very hungover and tired, while I am big into sports and health for which alcohol has a very negative impact.
my aunt died....the world has lost a great soul...so i felt likedrinking, but today the gym...get back on track...trying to find something interesting to do, maybe gardening
For many people the non alcoholic drinks are a useful tool to avoid the alcohol containing drinks. May not work for you but has been a useful bridge towards complete abstention for many many others
I like alcohol because it helps me relax at the end of the day. But I have a habit of having a little too much... three drinks maybe four now and then. And too late at night and I think I'm waking up without the energy I want. If it is because of the alcohol.... I think I need to quit. Any body out there with a similar experience?
Yup, I was just like you. I used to think that it wasn't a problem and i had it under control, and that alcohol actually helped me in some way, but that's all lies. After a few months sober, It's clear to me now that it was actually alcohol that was causing my emotional instability, my anxiety, my inability to concentrate and remember, and it was harming my overall health. I do miss beer but i do not miss any of the bad things that come with alcohol use; There are literally no benefits. When you've been sober for long enough, all the excuses that people have for their drinking is always clearly cringe and and deluded.
Did a year off in 2020. Doing a month or two off right now day 26. Jive dancing nights are alcohol for me. And I love Ghost Ship zero and Guinjness zero if I do have a drink.
Hi really loved your video, I've tried a few alcohol free wines but as yet havnt really liked them, can you suggest one, I've tried alcohol free prosecco and cider both of those are really good but I've yet to find a good wine substitute x
Sure try dealcoholised wine rather than alcohol-free wine, huge difference as the de-alcoholized wine tastes like wine but the non-alcohol ones just taste like fruit juice..
I'm starting to see a lot of vids that are congratulating the young adults of today for clearly drinking less alcohol, and that certainly is a wonderful thing. However the fact that you can't vape it might be a good portion of the reason why it's not considered "cool".
This all so intellectual for most ofbusbits much more basic and not about stages and finding no benefits its cuz we are in trouble...and need to rescue ourselves
As a trainee psychotherapist… I found it fairly shocking that there are psychologists who don’t try interventions out for themselves a few times before offering them to their clients… she’s right, it isn’t ok! Oof that’s not a very ethical way to practise tbh 😕 don’t get me wrong, I know it might seem silly or might be difficult to test some interventions out on yourself if they aren’t relevant to your life. However, quite often mental health professionals will have clients with similar issues to themselves: parallel processes, people are drawn to each other somehow it seems.
There are definitely benefits to drinking. Ii.e. t can enhance your personality, contribute to your fun, give you a sense of humor. help in you bond with people etc. so there’s a long list. However, there’s a downside. It can adversely affect your sleep, your looks, motivation, purpose, drive, and potentially your health. Bottom line, alcohol, will prevent a person from being their best self.
All of the “benefits” that you listed can be accomplished without the need for alcohol. It adds nothing unless you have low esteem or low confidence. There are much better solutions for those problems
OK, these are some good reminders, part of increasing your mental clarity and boosting your drive, comes with quitting. Yes, there are many ways to quit, Steffon Barkload's Quit Drinking Forever is what worked for me, best shortcut I go’ogled that took days to make me dislike the juice 100%
You don’t have an addictive gene like me also my sister died at 43 years old and they proved she had an addictive gene 🧬 big difference we will never understand that if there’s know problems to stop or say no 🤔👍
Its hard to limit yourself to only 2 or 3 drinks 🍸 but if you can do it you can beat your demons 😈 truth just have 2 or three drinks and go home to watch a movie 🎬 or go to a movie 🎬 theater 🎥 to finish your night away from the bar
I'm late to this video. I quit drinking in 2005 and just wanted to watch your video because -- respectfully -- you're good looking! And you're a good presenter. I've been rummaging through my (ridiculously extensive) collection of old movies, most of them from the 1930s. American films before 1934 can be pretty wild & risque. Women have strong roles in these pictures. This genre is often called "Pre-Code" because after 1934, studios had to sanitize their content according to strict guidelines, especially the sex stuff. But what I've noticed about the films from the later thirties is that, while the censorship was more heavy-handed about some topics (and women behaved more stereotypically), characters are shown drinking A LOT. Much more than in the pre-code films (and the silent films before that). It's almost as though alcohol was an invisible character in many of the stories. Somehow this didn't bother the morality police. Just a data point from the field.
Have you ever heard of Prohibition? Maybe educate yourself. It will never be illegal again. Let people make their own decisions. Some people have the freedom to drink, and some do not.
Dunno? Back in my day Australians were the biggest consumers of ecstasy in the world… we were certainly doing a lot of both. The kids now seems to be at least trying to live a healthier Iife 😅 Better than the self destructive 2000’s 😂
there are NO benefits to drinking....Tell that to a soldier in the Civil War who has to be amputated and Alcohol is the Only Drug available to KILL The Pain!
Hmmmm I definitely think your behaviour was different if you were getting black out drunk im thinking people around you can’t tell you’re different because they’re drunk or drinking. 😂
It's a shame you feel the need to put muzak behind the whole video and do loads of jump cuts and fleeting cartoon illustrations of the things you mention. It's like we're all children who can't concentrate and don't know what things are. The message of the video is good but all the other stuff is unnecessary and distracting from that message - kind of patronising to the viewer's intelligence too.
Critical thinking is vital, and it's great to question ideas, but it's also important to remember there's a person on the other side of the screen. Let's keep the discussion kind and productive!
What are you talking about, it is a benefit to society to people of all ages being clear headed, alcohol is related to many cancers, and chronic diseases, loss of productivity loss of being present for family, responsible for car accidents etc
Wtf are you talking about why would her age pertain to this convo and how would it be a loss to society if the person were younger? Seems like incredibly self centered, bizarre thinking

Life so much better without the poison😊
on a side note … the background music makes it a hard listen for my brain🤷♂️ I don’t understand why so many youtubers do this🤓
Exactly! A GIANT waste of time! Now, if only I can spend less time on my phone:)
Thank you for your authenticity ❤
Yes that video did it for me too
I'm proud of you!
👏👏👏👏
Thank you for sharing….Mental clarity! On point without the booze. Even early on in the sober journey. So I have noticed.
Thanks so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I wish you were my psychologist you are really great 👍 👌 truth you should be a life coach you have a good confidence about you for real
Thanks!
All I see lately is comments everywhere saying people are giving up alcohol I love seeing it not gonna lie ive gave it up on day 16 👍
You have a good decorating style i like your backround of home decor in your videos you could be an interior decorator you have the golden eye 👁
Thank you so much, I really appreciate this as this is one of my hobbies.
❤This was a very interesting video, thank you for sharing!
Nice balanced logic. So, what are some decent red and white alcohol free wines?
I think it’s so interesting how some people try to feed drinks to other people and then get kind of upset when they say ‘ no thank you’. I honestly think a lot of people are actually jealous of other’s sobriety because it’s a hard thing to do. Getting drunk is a slut 😂
easy
I'm proud of you!
Good grief!
True that happened to me as well another reason to quit the poison
60+ yrs old and smacking a 6 pack of high strength beer every night for 25 years. I quit almost 3 months ago because of the same thing. It was sour in my mouth, acid reflux ruining my night and I became resentful that I couldn't fit a nice meal into my bloated tummy.
I haven't looked back.
I'm proud of you!
Don't kill plants

Thank you really want to try this
my aunt died....the world has lost a great soul...so i felt likedrinking, but today the gym...get back on track...trying to find something interesting to do, maybe gardening
I would still avoid the alcohol free drinks as well.
Verry Blessed . Please always be a Non Drinker 😊🤗💖
Well done.
What exactly are these non alcoholic beverages that look and taste just like alcohol? Inquiring minds want to know!
Club soda /splash of cran/dash of lime. I will bring canned flavored sparkling wate in my purse and refill in bathroom. Saves $!
refreshing honesty, love it!
Ah thank you.
trouble is the liquor store is 250 m; the supermarkt is 300m...it's hard to say no and keep saying no
Great video. I appreciate your honesty.
Working on it
Me too. We got this! ❤
i'm about 30 days sober now
thank you for this. However I found the music distracting and didn’t anything to the content.
Waitrose does a white de-alcoholised wine I think.
Agree de alc wines are getting good. There are some good Australian brands. Class M Planet by Konpira Maru is a great red if you like drier red wines
Super awesome
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Update video coming soon.
@@dr.beckyspelman great!
I loved the therapy words you used, pretty informative
I'm starting to see a lot of vids that are congratulating the young adults of today for clearly drinking less alcohol, and that certainly is a wonderful thing. However the fact that you can't vape it might be a good portion of the reason why it's not considered "cool".
This all so intellectual for most ofbusbits much more basic and not about stages and finding no benefits its cuz we are in trouble...and need to rescue ourselves
I'm proud of you!
GREAT VID :)
The music is rather distacting
Apologies about that.
@@dr.beckyspelman ahhhh but good vid tho
I find the music sets the tone and is rather soothing... 😌
Good news to me. Alcohol use is on decline. If true that’s good news for all of us!
Hotel bar music
Good story. I could barely pay attention to it for the awful background noise.
Thanks for your comment, sorry about that I live on a busy Road.
@@dr.beckyspelman I meant the "music."
Luxury spa waiting room music
Great talk, the volume is a bit low.
Thanks for the volume I’ll improve for next time.
I hope everything's ok with the ceiling.
What do you think is wrong with the ceiling?
ah yeah no feedback at all, might as well doa bottle of macallan malt whisky...simply the best; i feel like giving up altogether
i got Copy and Paste addiction
😂
OK, these are some good reminders, part of increasing your mental clarity and boosting your drive, comes with quitting. Yes, there are many ways to quit, Steffon Barkload's Quit Drinking Forever is what worked for me, best shortcut I go’ogled that took days to make me dislike the juice 100%
You don’t have an addictive gene like me also my sister died at 43 years old and they proved she had an addictive gene 🧬 big difference we will never understand that if there’s know problems to stop or say no 🤔👍
Day 3 ... 😉
Well done
Its hard to limit yourself to only 2 or 3 drinks 🍸 but if you can do it you can beat your demons 😈 truth just have 2 or three drinks and go home to watch a movie 🎬 or go to a movie 🎬 theater 🎥 to finish your night away from the bar
People who don't drink at all have lower life expectancy. Explain that 🤔
I'm late to this video.
Thank you for the compliment you are very kind. We’ll done on not driving since 2005. Your comments on alcohol in films over the years is interesting.
The audio is atrocious, busy city traffic, monotonous music and run on sentences, no pauses. Uncomfortable challenge to listen to,
I gave up at 2 minutes. Why people think it’s a great idea to drown themselves out with music is beyond me, even if it was good music. Hopeless.
Have you ever heard of Prohibition? Maybe educate yourself. It will never be illegal again. Let people make their own decisions. Some people have the freedom to drink, and some do not.
and you were like like a like
getting hurt because of alcohol is no good; i am not a saint either, i guess
lets be honest, younger people are not drinking as much because they are doing way more drugs
Dunno? Back in my day Australians were the biggest consumers of ecstasy in the world… we were certainly doing a lot of both. The kids now seems to be at least trying to live a healthier Iife 😅 Better than the self destructive 2000’s 😂
C has a tight rear. Totally sweet.
Drink down , coke taking is way up, and people of all ages are taking it, nearly better to go back on the gargle
there are NO benefits to drinking....Tell that to a soldier in the Civil War who has to be amputated and Alcohol is the Only Drug available to KILL The Pain!
Hmmmm I definitely think
your behaviour was different if you were getting black out drunk im thinking people around you can’t tell you’re different because they’re drunk or drinking.
You have a beautiful neck ❤

Are all psychologists this dim, like? This more like interminable gossip, like.
Critical thinking is vital, and it's great to question ideas, but it's also important to remember there's a person on the other side of the screen. Let's keep the discussion kind and productive!
Fake accent ?
What do you mean?
You are not 18 …. No society loss…keep doing the drinking
I never went back.
What are you talking about, it is a benefit to society to people of all ages being clear headed, alcohol is related to many cancers, and chronic diseases, loss of productivity loss of being present for family, responsible for car accidents etc
@@greensorrel6860 thank you I appreciate you replying to that comment.
Wtf are you talking about why would her age pertain to this convo and how would it be a loss to society if the person were younger? Seems like incredibly self centered, bizarre thinking
