Never been much of an actor, if I don't like someone, they know it. As far as the post office? That's the only job where they reward your hard work-with more work. The sad story is that most basketball legends who actually saw Wilt played keep talking about how incredible Wilt was. Meanwhile kids or even grown men who don't even see a single game of him played, keep disrespecting and discrediting Wilt. A tall guy who only played against short white guys. I think some younger people need a background. Even today lebron and co. play pick up games today at UCLA. Magic in the 80's had them a lot. The coach didn't explain enough. Wilt was in his late 40's, they played full court, Magic won, you heard the story. Wilt said let's play half court. Without so much room to avoid him, he swatted many. I think Wilt was in better shape after he retired a few years.

That is saying something because Hawk and Jerry were great players too. Hawkins was a playground legend...but Wilt was simply Wilt. The Dipper...Almost Paul Bunyan like. I saw Wilt play against Wes Unseld and the Baltimore Bullets as a kid (with Earl Monroe). Wilt dominated that game, and Unseld was a dominant rebounder...but Wilt was at another level. I have never seen another player with his presence who changed every facet of the game when he was in it.

Very true Sheep Dog, and an incredible accomplishment; The only other player that I believe blocked the un-blockable was a healthy, young Bill Walton at a pick up game in the early 70's when he was at UCLA. The two became quite good friends after that.
There's a really easy to find video on youtube of Wilt blocking him two or three times in one possession. He's the only guy that ever blocked it playing him on-ball. Thurmond blocked him on help defense once, I think.

I am 56 and seen all of them play except Mikan. I saw Wilt as a kid...he was the most dominating and athletic player in the history of the game and easily the greatest scorer and rebounder. Most people do not realize he was a great shot blocker, had world class strength and speed, and one year led the NBA in assists (yes a center led the league in assists).
Just to emphasize how great Wilt was: he retired from competitive NBA ball in 1973 (age 36). Who else with that kind of layoff (7-8 years) at that age (43-44) could dominate current NBA players? In terms of dominance and individual accomplishments, Wilt was the GOAT! In terms of team success, Russell is the GOAT. In terms of career accomplishments, Kareem is the GOAT. In terms of all around play, Oscar, Magic, Bird and LeBron all have a case for GOAT. In terms of media backing, popularity, TV ratings and money, MJ is the GOAT. In terms of defensive play, maybe Russell is GOAT. MJ is the GOAT at SG. When you try and put all of these categories together, it's difficult to say who the GOAT is. Mikan, Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Oscar, MJ, and LeBron all have a legitimate case.

Kobe was better at certain things but overall LeBron is more diverse. LeBron can take average players to the finals. Kobe has a different mentality and needed other top players to get to the finals. Kobe was a better clutch scorer late in games because he was so confident and had more of a killer instinct. LeBron is more of a "team" player but has become MJ/Kobe like in the last few years late in games. If I was drafting, I would pick LeBron to build a team around. If I had to pick one of them to take a last second shot, I would pick Kobe.
In the history of basketball i have never seen anyone that was almost 7'3 in sneakers and could run the floor, not goofiy like most huge players that just use they're height and 3 point shots. back then Shaq would foul out in the 1st quarter. They didn't let Wilt just slam people back for an easy dunk, that's why they were more post moves.

I consider Jerry West a pretty good judge of talent. He not only played with and against Wilt; he was a general manager for many years after that. So it's not like he's been in a cave since the 70's or anything. And he has said that if Wilt were playing today in his prime, he would lead the league in scoring, rebounds, and blocked shots. Whether you think MJ was the only player better than Wilt like I do, nobody can deny that Wilt was the strongest, most athletic, most dominate player to ever play. Wilt's legacy is harmed by his quitting at 36 years old when he was still one of the top couple of players in the league. If he had played the 6 or 7 more years he was capable of, I guarantee he would have won 2 or 3 more rings with the Lakers.

I think Wilt is the greatest basketball player of all time, and Jordan isn't even close at second. Jordan could be slowed down on offense at times, Wilt was unstoppable.

I heard bill Walton say in an interview one time that his biggest regret was never playing against wilt in those pickup games... I assume it was because Walton was injured so much, I doubt he'd pass up a chance to go against wilt if he was healthy. .. but yeah, stories of those pickup games involving wilt were legendary even as they were happening because of what wilt was doing even at a relatively advanced age
Walton was rarely healthy enough to play in offseason pickup games. Almost from the first couple years he was in the NBA he had nagging knee injuries that hampered him. And of course his foot problems. Even in his MVP season with the Blazers he missed like 25 games.

Oscar rarely blocked shots because he didn't want to get faked into the air and get called for fouls. Thus he isn't a good pick for "potential quadruple double" because it's not too likely he had many double digit block games. Really in the early 60s only two people blocked shots -- WIlt and Russell (until Nate Thurmond came into the league).
I saw a stat that said they calculated the blocks Wilt had from the full game footage tapes that exist, and it said he averaged 8.8 blocks in those games

Wilt and Dennis Rodman were the two greatest athletes who ever played in the NBA. 40+ Wilt dominating prime players doesn't surprise me. The man had one season were he didn't get substituted a single time and played all games, this tells you a lot about the capabilities he had as an athlete, the physical attributes needed to be as great as Wilt was on his position and his talent was just added on top of it. It bothers me a great deal nowadays NBA generation (not only fans, even basketball historians or self-proclaimed ones, journalists and players) downplays his achievements. While in 99% of the cases, the man usually becomes a legend the legend the mythos and most of the stories + achievement are heavily exaggerated Wilt is in the 1% were it is absolutely not. The NBA family has to realize Chamberlain was a 1 in a 100 year athlete, bigger than life (not because of his physical presence, it just added to it).

That is a great story. Larry was the coach at UCLA Magic's first two seasons in the NBA. Worthy and Bryon Scott were still in college and AC Green was still in high school. Fun fact, Larry Brown likes to hear himself tell stories.
Instead of A. C. Green, I think he meant David Greenwood, a Los Angeles native, who played at UCLA from 1975-79 and who was the second pick in the 1979 NBA draft (after Magic Johnson).
It just goes to show that when you want to know the truth....ask the ones who have been involved in the game. To Micheal Jordan's credit, he doesn't consider himself the greatest because he says he didn't get the opportunity to play against the legends of the past. Respect due. Individually he is number 1, but it's not tennis or golf, it's a team sport, so he's not among top 10 all-time as a team player. Bill Russell most amazing quote ever: when asked the question, 'You, Micheal Jordan, Wilt, who do you pick?' he answers, "You pick Bill Russell... for the reason, he will never distort your defense or your offense..." Players like Iverson, a young Jordan, Westbrook, distort their team and the team cannot play floor IQ properly - there is no team glue!
But when Wilt had talent put around him and Wilt was focused more on passing to get the offense going, and defense, his 1967 76ers team set the record at the time for the most wins in a season and went on to defeat Bill Russell's dynasty Celtics team to win the championship. So Wilt proved right there that he could be an amazing team player if given the great talent around him and a coach that knew what to do with him.
Well he got within 1 or 2 points of winning the championship against Russell's Celtics multiple times even when he was playing as the 1st option scorer on the team, so its not like he didn't have success playing that way. Just came up slightly short on plays that were pretty much out of his control.
The 76er's tried to coax him out of retirement at 45 years old. His last season in his late 30's, 38 I think he averaged 16 points and 19 rebounds!! And he wasn't the scorer.Jerry West and Gail Woodrich were the scorers. He had 26 blocks one game. He had 55 rebounds against Bill Russell, and scored 63 points against him, and Russell was 6'10 or 6'11 and basically considered the best behind Wilt back then. People that don't know much about him, think of his dunks and finger rolls. But his bread and butter was that fade away, off the board shot that was impossible to stop.
Mario van holle Russell definitely did well against Wilt at times and was the best defender of that generation and probably would be now too. But Wilt definitely did whatever he damn well wanted to at times

Based on footage I have seen, and comments by contemporary players, he took it easy because he didn't want to hurt people, but in my opinion he also was competing against himself, and that's why he mostly played a finesse game, ie that unstoppable fadeaway he liked to hit off the backboard. Otherwise it would have been too easy and he would have been bored.

I've seen them all. He is the GOAT. He still has something like 63 records that still stand. OK he didn't win a lot of championship but we are talking the BEST player of all times. Larry Brown only coached at UCLA for two season, 1979-81. He would not have been in the UCLA men's gym in 1986. He misremembered, and probably meant David Greenwood, who had been an all-American at UCLA and was then playing in the NBA.
There are a lot of comments about the accuracy of this story. First off, all top college players and high school players on the Westcoast played in LA in the summer against the pros back then. Heck, Magic was playing pros like George Gervin at 14 years old (Google Bill Simmons interview with Gervin). Second, Scott is from LA and played at ASU from 1979 to 1983. So it is quite likely he was home for the summer playing with the pros. Third, Green was also on the Westcoast at OSU from 1981 to 1985 and also could have been in LA playing summer ball with the pros. Worthy met Magic on his recruiting trip to MSU and could have been playing in LA in the summer as well.

Wilt Chamberlain was a world class athlete that comes along every 3-400 years. He dominated track & field, high jump, & volleyball. After watching Wilt bench press 600 lbs several times in an Olympic hotel gym, Arnold Swartznagger the world's strongest man, left the weight room & never came back when Wilt was there. Wilt would've dominated any era of NBA basketball especially this one.

Wilt is/was so clearly head ans shoulders above everyone that he played with and everyone that has come after him. He might have been referring to Dave Greenwood, not AC Green. Greenwood graduated from UCLA in 1979 and made the all NBA rookie team in 1980. He was a pretty good player in the NBA, look up his stats. He was also part of the 1990 NBA championship Pistons team.

Scott is from LA and played at ASU from 1979 to 1983. So it is quite likely he was home for the summer playing with the pro like all top college players did back then. Green was also on the Westcoast at OSU from 1981 to 1985 and also could have been in LA playing summer ball with the pros. Worthy met Magic on his recruiting trip to MSU and could have been playing in LA in the summer as well.
Larry Brown coached at UCLA from 1979 to 1981, so he had to have been referring to David Greenwood. I highly doubt that Magic Johnson would have had a teenage A. C. Green playing on the same pick-up team with himself, Bernard King, Byron Scott, and James Worthy when he wanted to defeat Wilt Chamberlain.
Wilt started his career in 1959...from what I've heard the guy was a hall of fame volleyball player after his NBA days and was running marathons in his 50's. He (if he wanted to) could have been a defensive minded center up until literally 1990. He could have played in 5 decades competitively. Imagine the stats he would have had. Probably over 50k points 40k rebounds 5k blocks...obscene mind boggling stats.

The reason Wilt Chamberlain was so great, and would be great in every era was that he was a player the height of Rudy gobert, but with an extra 20 to 30 lb of muscle and the jumping ability of Michael jordan. You take an athlete like that, and it doesn't matter if they've never played basketball in their life, they're still going to dominate, if not on offense, certainly on defense. If players like Hakeem Olajuwon, Joel Embiid and Giannis "The Greek Freak" could learn basketball very late in life, and domininate, Wilt Chamberlain certainly could. He's much bigger, and every bit is athletic as all three of those guys.
People say Bo and/or Deion were the two best athletes we've ever seen. The more you learn about Wilt, the more you slowly come to realize he was probably the greatest athlete ANYONE has ever seen. Truly amazing.

I think some younger people need a background. Even today lebron and co. play pick up games today at UCLA. Magic in the 80's had them a lot. The coach didn't explain enough. Wilt was in his late 40's, they played full court, Magic won, you heard the story. Wilt said let's play half court. Without so much room to avoid him, he swatted many. I think Wilt was in better shape after he retired a few years.

I saw Wilt, Jerry West and Connie Hawkins play an exhibition game in 1969. Wilt was the greatest athlete I ever saw.
That is saying something because Hawk and Jerry were great players too. Hawkins was a playground legend...but Wilt was simply Wilt. The Dipper...Almost Paul Bunyan like. I saw Wilt play against Wes Unseld and the Baltimore Bullets as a kid (with Earl Monroe). Wilt dominated that game, and Unseld was a dominant rebounder...but Wilt was at another level. I have never seen another player with his presence who changed every facet of the game when he was in it.

There's a really easy to find video on youtube of Wilt blocking him two or three times in one possession. He's the only guy that ever blocked it playing him on-ball. Thurmond blocked him on help defense once, I think.

I am 56 and seen all of them play except Mikan. I saw Wilt as a kid...he was the most dominating and athletic player in the history of the game and easily the greatest scorer and rebounder. Most people do not realize he was a great shot blocker, had world class strength and speed, and one year led the NBA in assists (yes a center led the league in assists).

Kobe was better at certain things but overall LeBron is more diverse. LeBron can take average players to the finals. Kobe has a different mentality and needed other top players to get to the finals. Kobe was a better clutch scorer late in games because he was so confident and had more of a killer instinct. LeBron is more of a "team" player but has become MJ/Kobe like in the last few years late in games. If I was drafting, I would pick LeBron to build a team around. If I had to pick one of them to take a last second shot, I would pick Kobe.

I consider Jerry West a pretty good judge of talent. He not only played with and against Wilt; he was a general manager for many years after that. Also said he'd like to see some of today's centers go up against him in his prime; said they'd be embarrassed. He should know.

Norman Bates Strength isn't everything, but Wilt had height, length, speed, stamina, etc. This guy was like an upgraded version of Shaq fused with Hakeem.
Wilt was the Lebron of his time, bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic than anyone before him at his position, and was something no one had ever seen before. I think Wilt is the greatest basketball player of all time, and Jordan isn't even close at second. Jordan could be slowed down on offense at times, Wilt was unstoppable.
Zachary Licht maybe physically wilt was better, but in terms of scoring, mental toughness, skill, and combination with speed and athleticism, no one touches Jordan.

I assume it was because Walton was injured so much, I doubt he'd pass up a chance to go against wilt if he was healthy. .. but yeah, stories of those pickup games involving wilt were legendary even as they were happening because of what wilt was doing even at a relatively advanced age
Walton was rarely healthy enough to play in offseason pickup games. Almost from the first couple years he was in the NBA he had nagging knee injuries that hampered him. And of course his foot problems. Even in his MVP season with the Blazers he missed like 25 games.

Oscar rarely blocked shots because he didn't want to get faked into the air and get called for fouls. Thus he isn't a good pick for "potential quadruple double" because it's not too likely he had many double digit block games. Really in the early 60s only two people blocked shots -- WIlt and Russell (until Nate Thurmond came into the league).

Wilt and Dennis Rodman were the two greatest athletes who ever played in the NBA. 40+ Wilt dominating prime players doesn't surprise me. The man had one season were he didn't get substituted a single time and played all games, this tells you a lot about the capabilities he had as an athlete, the physical attributes needed to be as great as Wilt was on his position and his talent was just added on top of it. It bothers me a great deal nowadays NBA generation (not only fans, even basketball historians or self-proclaimed ones, journalists and players) downplays his achievements. While in 99% of the cases, the man usually becomes a legend the legend the mythos and most of the stories + achievement are heavily exaggerated Wilt is in the 1% were it is absolutely not. That is a great story. Larry was the coach at UCLA Magic's first two seasons in the NBA. Worthy and Bryon Scott were still in college and AC Green was still in high school.

Instead of A. C. Green, I think he meant David Greenwood, a Los Angeles native, who played at UCLA from 1975-79 and who was the second pick in the 1979 NBA draft (after Magic Johnson).
It just goes to show that when you want to know the truth....ask the ones who have been involved in the game. To Micheal Jordan's credit, he doesn't consider himself the greatest because he says he didn't get the opportunity to play against the legends of the past. Respect due. It takes a team to win championships but if we're arguing individual talent, Wilt's numbers are ridiculously good.
Individually he is number 1, but it's not tennis or golf, it's a team sport, so he's not among top 10 all-time as a team player. Bill Russell most amazing quote ever: when asked the question, 'You, Micheal Jordan, Wilt, who do you pick?' he answers, "You pick Bill Russell... for the reason, he will never distort your defense or your offense..." Players like Iverson, a young Jordan, Westbrook, distort their team and the team cannot play floor IQ properly - there is no team glue!
But when Wilt had talent put around him and Wilt was focused more on passing to get the offense going, and defense, his 1967 76ers team set the record at the time for the most wins in a season and went on to defeat Bill Russell's dynasty Celtics team to win the championship. So Wilt proved right there that he could be an amazing team player if given the great talent around him and a coach that knew what to do with him.

Well he got within 1 or 2 points of winning the championship against Russell's Celtics multiple times even when he was playing as the 1st option scorer on the team, so its not like he didn't have success playing that way. Just came up slightly short on plays that were pretty much out of his control.
Just remember his Lakers won 33 straight games in 71-72 they won 69 games for the season ; a feat not yet surpassed.
The 76er's tried to coax him out of retirement at 45 years old. His last season in his late 30's, 38 I think he averaged 16 points and 19 rebounds!! And he wasn't the scorer.Jerry West and Gail Woodrich were the scorers. He had 26 blocks one game. He had 55 rebounds against Bill Russell, and scored 63 points against him, and Russell was 6'10 or 6'11 and basically considered the best behind Wilt back then. People that don't know much about him, think of his dunks and finger rolls. But his bread and butter was that fade away, off the board shot that was impossible to stop.
I sometimes hear or read that russell took Wilt to school ...how can you take someone to school with 20 + rebs and 50+ points ?
Mario van holle Russell definitely did well against Wilt at times and was the best defender of that generation and probably would be now too. But Wilt definitely did whatever he damn well wanted to at times

Wilt was the G.O.A.T talent, he was just gentle! If he had the attitude of many athletes who are seemingly obsessed with competition and winning, there' would be no doubt who's the greatest athlete ever was,. not just basketball player!
Based on footage I have seen, and comments by contemporary players, he took it easy because he didn't want to hurt people, but in my opinion he also was competing against himself, and that's why he mostly played a finesse game, ie that unstoppable fadeaway he liked to hit off the backboard. Otherwise it would have been too easy and he would have been bored.

He still has something like 63 records that still stand. OK he didn't win a lot of championship but we are talking the BEST player of all times. If MJ or James would of come into the paint on him, he would embarrassed them. They say he didn't play against anyone. FALSE. He played against some of the best centers of all time. Most of whom are in the HOF.

That game was in 1986 that made Wilt Chamberlain 49-50 years old. AC green playing gives away the year.

There are a lot of comments about the accuracy of this story. First off, all top college players and high school players on the Westcoast played in LA in the summer against the pros back then. Heck, Magic was playing pros like George Gervin at 14 years old (Google Bill Simmons interview with Gervin).
Second, Scott is from LA and played at ASU from 1979 to 1983. So it is quite likely he was home for the summer playing with the pros. Third, Green was also on the Westcoast at OSU from 1981 to 1985 and also could have been in LA playing summer ball with the pros. Worthy met Magic on his recruiting trip to MSU and could have been playing in LA in the summer as well.

Pls remember that during those days offensive fouls were easily- called.the moment you put down your shoulders against the oppenent then its offensive foul.thats why wilt has to do fade- away jumper. Come to think of it,wilt never fouled out. It means he have done the scoring very efficiently w/o fouling offensively.

Wilt Chamberlain was a world class athlete that comes along every 3-400 years. He dominated track & field, high jump, & volleyball. After watching Wilt bench press 600 lbs several times in an Olympic hotel gym, Arnold Swartznagger the world's strongest man, left the weight room & never came back when Wilt was there. Wilt would've dominated any era of NBA basketball especially this one.

I am a huuuuge LBJ fan, but even I acknowledge that there is not even an argument about who the GOAT is. Wilt is/was so clearly head ans shoulders above everyone that he played with and everyone that has come after him. The only thing people can say is that LBJ is prolly gona play like 20 seasons, so he wins in longevity, but looking at their peaks, Wilt is so far above everyone else.

The 3 point line actually created more space for Bigs to work in the paint. The problem is 99% of todays bigs don't want to do the dirty work in the the Post. They'd rather be jump shooters.

He might have been referring to Dave Greenwood, not AC Green. Greenwood graduated from UCLA in 1979 and made the all NBA rookie team in 1980. He was a pretty good player in the NBA, look up his stats. He was also part of the 1990 NBA championship Pistons team.

Wilt would block 20 shots against anybody. Bill Russell was one of the top defensive players of all time and Wilt scored 55 on him.

Wilt started his career in 1959...from what I've heard the guy was a hall of fame volleyball player after his NBA days and was running marathons in his 50's. He (if he wanted to) could have been a defensive minded center up until literally 1990. He could have played in 5 decades competitively. Imagine the stats he would have had. Probably over 50k points 40k rebounds 5k blocks...obscene mind boggling stats.
Michael Jordan once said, "It is an honor to be second to that man." Obviously, he meant most of his scoring stats are second to we know who.

The reason Wilt Chamberlain was so great, and would be great in every era was that he was a player the height of Rudy gobert, but with an extra 20 to 30 lb of muscle and the jumping ability of Michael jordan. You take an athlete like that, and it doesn't matter if they've never played basketball in their life, they're still going to dominate, if not on offense, certainly on defense.
If players like Hakeem Olajuwon, Joel Embiid and Giannis "The Greek Freak" could learn basketball very late in life, and domininate, Wilt Chamberlain certainly could. He's much bigger, and every bit is athletic as all three of those guys.

I saw Wilt/Baylor/West every time they came to SF to play the Warriors. They were all awesome, even though I hated seeing them beat up my Warriors. One time they won 162-99, that was whack. Another time Baylor and West each dropped 43. Wilt always had 30 points, 30 boards, like it was nothing.
