Is the Osprey Aether 65L Backpack the BEST for Wild Camping?

- In this video I am going to be giving you my first impressions on how my new Osprey Aether backpack - the 65l version - performed for me during this overnight wild camping trip and asking was it worth the expense
The ground was hard going, up all the way to the final pitch site which gave the pack a good test run as I battled the difficult heather terrain on my way up to the Playback Ridge in Leitrim Ireland

Hi Mike! Loving your videos! I’ve got the Helm 2 and Osprey Aether 70AG which I often load up to 18kg for winter wildcamping. Carrying the weight on my hips is so much more comfortable than pulling down on traditional shoulder straps. ATVB Sidestickflyer 😎
@@sidestickflyer really appreciate your kind comment 🙂 we have the same kit near enough, both excellent as you know well. Not tested helms 2 in serious winter weather but then again it's not designed for that but feel it would be fine, will find out soon enough 😄 is that you loading the heli, I helped out a few times doing similar with Chinook in Falklands, nearly got crushed against container it can be dangerous work. @@michaelhanly8575 I’m the pilot Mike. HMS Endurance Lynx down in Antarctica back in the early 90’s. I was camping out in the Helm 2 a few weeks ago on Dartmoor in -8c but no wind so a great night!. I use a Jetboil only as my stove and tend to make my own meals in foil bags. It just makes my one night wildcamps so easy. For warmer Weather I’ve got a Snugpak synthetic sleeping bag but for winter I’ve now invested in a very warm Alpkit down bag. Next on the agenda is a much better inflatable sleep mat but it’s a ‘mine field’ of choice! How about a review of your kit Mike to let us know what you are using? I forgot to say that I’ve got Berghaus Yeti gaiters over Gortex boots for the very wet Dartmoor peat bogs! ATVB Graham
@@sidestickflyer ah Graham I'm envious, I got flying scholarship in RAF in training as an apprentice, ppl, but my big regret looking back is did not take it further. Antarctic must have been fun, I flew over South Gorgia in back C130 that was stunning. You should be doing camping videos yourself, you would have great stories to tell. Take a look at the big Agnes rapide SL pad, I talk about it in a couple videos, found it excellent, just got foam pad to increase R rating a bit for winter tho not tried combination just yet. Keep in touch Graham, nice to chat 👍
@@michaelhanly8575 Thanks Mike. The Big Agnes SL is on my short list! South Georgia was my favourite place to visit down there with the stunning scenery and thousands of seals and penguins. The C130 used to parachute our mail down to us on occasions. Looking forward to your next video. ATVB Graham
Hi Mike.
You are getting very handy at the videos. Very enjoyable! Did the Playbank from the Dowra side May 2023. Not great on top for a tent, but it was raining so hard I threw the tent up on the nearest flat bit to the trig point. Definitely somewhere you'd be surprised to meet anyone, except a farmer!
Just in the door from an overnight on Inishmore, fairly windy and wet but it's character building haha. This time of year it's a long night in the sleeping bag and of course an extra hour last night. Definitely need your en-suite bottle on a wet night 😂.
Noodles are a great thing for camping, light to carry, easy to make up and keep you going. I'd be interested in that diet you mentioned. I've done my own restricted carbs since August and getting close to 10kg gone, almost the weight of the rucksack! Definitely makes uphills easier! Love the videos, keep up the good work.
ATB, George
@@pipandbenji Hi George, ah your too kind, but it's very nice of you. You definitely have to get used to the rain and wetland to hike over here but it's well worth it as you know yourself. Yes not great top to pitch so I was lucky to find spot I did, the following week, next Video, I hiked up from other side but found it very boggy, was hard to get decent spot but we always get something. Innishmore sounds interesting, hope u doing a video of it? Well done yourself on 10kg, it makes great difference to being able to enjoy a challenging hike, sounds like you did same thing as me, it's simple really isn't it, I stopped breakfast and eat between midday and 6pm, just reduces intake calories simple maths. Did couple 24hr fadts and quite few 18hrs. I let my wright come back up a bit from lowest as family said looked but too thin but found good balance now, have to keep disciplined tho as very easy to creep up. All best George 😁👍
Another good video. Really nice pack. I did consider it but went with the Forclaz 70l. I've no regrets. It's a fabulous pack for less than half the price. May not have all the bells and whistles of the Osprey, who's quality is legendary, but I had to cut my cloth. Envious of you having Leitrim on your doorstep.. it truly is God's country... even in the rain, but it wouldn't be Leitrim if it didn't rain 😂 Looking forward to the next one.
@@JTRavers69 great to get the feedback, really appreciate it, makes all the time spent editing worth the effort so thx. Was at Decathlon in Dublin today and picked up down jacket, they do some great gear for the price. I was cold on camp couple weeks ago, heavy frost on tent in morning, so decided to pick up another layer for sleep system. Rucksack is expensive and if I'd seen decathlon one before I bought I'm sure I would gone for that as well, but no regrets with the Osprey but cost did hurt at the time, spent long time should shouldn't I buy 😁. Yes I really enjoy the boglands, once you get used to it very satisfying. Thx again 👍
Great channel, great videos, great content, keep it up (subbed)
@@theslowwalkhome7314 super nice comment and so encouraging really appreciated, 😁👍
Hey Mike. Enjoyable video, couldn't figure out what time of the year it was until you said it was "the height of summer" 😂. Can you get some outro music, please? Bit of trad stuff would be nice 😀
@visman24 lol glad u enjoyed, yes could be winter as well, so hard to tell. Ok get some upbeat tunes just for u in next one 😁👌
Intermittent fasting is of interest to me as is leg work in gym. I am 60 and getting back to hiking and backpacking. Preparing for 100 mile multi day hike.
Thanks for comment Kevin, good luck with multiday hike btw will you be videoing it? I'm 66 in a few months so your a youngster :) Intermittent fasting is straightforward its a numbers game need to reduce calories overall and as importantly reduce insulin spikes we get from regular eating which takes the sugar from our food and save it away in our fat cells, survival process. I am no expert on the theory but having gone through the experience I can speak with some authority as it definitely worked for me. Key is to eat good food in the window you set and be disciplined, no snacking out side the window. Start gradually, too intense initially likely to fail, you have to ease into it and get used to the feeling of being hungry outside the eating window, after a while you do get used to it, if you getting irritable your overdoing it, when hungry drink water. What worked for me was extending time to start eating breakfast, went from 8 to 9 etc, after a few weeks stopped eating breakfast and eventually ate between 12-6 or 7pm with a few, not many, 24hr fasts but quite a few 18-20hrs, need to stay away from others when they are eating and you are not. There is autophagy benefit as well, body starts to eat old cells which is good, find other videos on the subject as these encouraged me, set realistic timeframe, took me 14mths but of course dropping weight gradually so see results which motivates, measure progress so weigh yourself every other day and record, I used fitbit app and see graph over time, if something is not measured it wont get done. I eventually decided I lost a bit too much weight so let myself go back up a bit but was good to see how the process just kept working and now its just as important to keep monitoring and maintaining but that's easier than loosing it. I had not realised how much belly fat I was really carrying until it disappeared and now feel much much better for it, food also tastes better and more enjoyable, said enough here, hope this helps. Leg work, can get back to you on this if still interested to chat, this one long enough I think
Mike thanks for the review! I just ordered this exact backpack
@@conorkcarroll Hi Conor, you won't regret it, hope my little review was of some help. Let me know how you get on with it 👍
Great vid mike keep it up king!!
@@SirDancelot haha 'King' must let Alex know what u said, glad u liked it. When u come over to visit Alex one day we will all have to take trip up the hills 😁👍
Nice video Mike, good pack but i will never give up my Lowe Alpine Kantega 2. Made in Tullamore Offaly back in the day when Lowe was manufacturing here. Regards Leonard.
@@leonardmcdermott7703 thanks Leonard, must take a look at the Kantega for interest. Got me thinking should look to see if there are companies making the sort kit we would use in Ireland, expect few and far between unless you know?
@michaelhanly8575 Lowe had a major manufacturing outlet here decades ago, but unfortunately they left and i believe have been bought up by another company. 'Thermarest' are manufactured in Cork but nothing notable after that. Maybe you should put it out there that as an honorary Irish man we need a few outdoor manufacturing cottage industries. Durston tents in Canada for example are a small family business so who knows. Regards from Dublin, Leonard.
@@leonardmcdermott7703 haha honorary Irishman, yes will have to look into it, maybe idea for video, all the best 👍
Most comfortable pack I've owned, but the weird external straps make it a pain to attach gear to the outside.
@@BrokenVikingOutdoors yes I agree, very impressed with comfort and ability to take heavier loads without feeling too heavy. Thx for commenting, I just checked your videos and see you using vern 1 looks nice tent, thinking of it when upgrade in future. ATB 👍
@michaelhanly8575 Was looking at the Hilleberg Soulo initially, sat inside a friends, but the extra room in the Vern 1 sold it for me.
@@BrokenVikingOutdoors ah thx interesting, I find I need more room these days, also price difference is significant
