Great video Mike, really enjoyed. We've only done wild camps in Wales but would love to get to Ireland at some point after seeing this. New sub from us, looking forward to seeing more.

Hi Mike - enjoying your uploads thank you - would you mind advising what the contour line timings are please - I’ve not seen this before and interested in understanding. Thank you.

Hi Gary, thanks for the nice comment very kind. I am following Naismith rule of thumb first published in 1892 by William Naismith a mountaineer - where a reasonably fit person should be able to hike 5km in 1 hr (flat ground) and ascent 100m in 10mins (or ascend 10m in 1min - distance between a contour), he was referring to quite fit people of that time really so we need to take this as an estimate or starting point and needs to be adjusted from personal experience taking into account terrain - smooth/heather/snow..., weight your carrying etc. I don't want to overcomplicate things as its quite simple really. When walking from point A-B if on an easy track I use 5km/hr (or 12mins per km) and for every contour I walk up add 1 min, (height between contours is 10m) I tend to keep the 1 min per contour for simplicity and not change for the sort of walking I am doing but I will change to 4 or 3km per hour depending on terrain. Note most people will only add in additional time when climbing up a contour and ignore when coming down, but depending on the steepness may need to add some additional time coming down. Have a look at video link below, this guy is a mountain leader but has a nice easy way of explaining map navigation in general may be clearer than this. Hope this helps Gary, let me know. I may do a short video myself going into more detail on this, was not sure anyone would be interested as just starting out doing these videos

Hi Mike - very much appreciate the detailed feedback which which makes sense - I hadn’t really considered the contour timing allowance previously but will apply when next out. Enjoying the new channel and content. Thanks again and take care.
