    Could you explain how fullers were traditionally added to these?

      either forge in a groove and clean it or grind in a grove and clean it. Both would have been done and the different methods used would have varied.

    The inscription on the blade is "MXDCVI". The Oakshott Institute notes that as being the date of 1596. However, using the conventions of Roman numerals that is an error by the smith. M is 1,000; X is 10; D is 500. That would be 1,000 + 10 subtracted from 500 + 5 + 1. Or 1496.
    So the smith either made an error in stamping 1596 by transposing X and D, or made an error in stamping 1496. There are numerous examples of smiths, stonemasons etc who used a 'journeymans short form' when carving Roman numerals. These can be found on buildings constructed in the Neo Classicist style architecture during the century.

    Is this the sword that the Conquistadores like Pizarro, DeSoto, and Cortez's troops would have carried?

    • @armsarmorinc.4153

      Probably similar in many ways, the bits of gold left on this one indicate its pretty high status weapon and your average Conquistador would most likely not have the zhing for one of these.

    Thankyou for this video! nobody seems to talk about how they actually welded those complex hilts. Whenever you look up how to make rapiers, modern blacksmiths just use welders to get it done. I want to try this pinch welding technique.

      takes a bit of practice but works well when you get it down.

    Hey Craig; You guys should offer this one. It’s lovely and while a bit complex, it’s not outrageous. I think it would be popular. Alastair

    Excellent video,I was pondering on this only yesterday,this is most helpful.
    On a side note am I alone in thinking that many/most of the hilts seen on current reproductions look too big and not in proportion to the blade,certainly the rapier seen here is quite slender and elegant.

      Hi Christopher, yes the closeness of many complex hilts is often missed by modern replicas.

    I wonder if it's a hollow pommel? How were those made?

    • @armsarmorinc.4153
      @armsarmorinc.4153  2 роки тому

      The hollow pommels vary as there are a couple of ways to make them. Forge around a mandrel or drive a large swage through and then close the ends up are the two most common.

    I tried the hot cut fingers with a ring and it wasn't going so well, hard to reach what I wanted to hit, was starting to think it wouldn't work. I'm going to have to try this at this scale. Thank you for answering my questions, this was too hard to find.

    Question: On the A&A website - the pieces which are listed as 'Sold Out' - Can orders still be placed for those - or are you no longer producing them at all? Thanks.

    • @armsarmorinc.4153
      @armsarmorinc.4153  3 роки тому +1

      Great question. Most can be done as custom orders for items in the Artisan and Custom Galleries. There are a few we may not be able to do again for certain reasons but not too many. Some of our complex hilted pieces are quite back ordered so they may not be able to order until we are able to shorten those times. We do not sacrifice quality for speed so our delivery times can be long on some pieces.

    This is probably from the beggining of the 17th century, not the 16th century. This is certanly not the sword that was around during the italian wars.

    Great video, Thank you for posting Craig. The only ask I would have is if you could provide the dimensions and weights of the swords you are showing.
