- Live November 1984.
Good video and sound (mono). From SP speed normal VHS video tape (master) recorded from original broadcast.
Saw the Bangles with the Fuzztones at the Ritz, NYC a couple of months before this broadcast. Bangles were a great little secret before the massive fame they achieved later.
Back when music artists had talent. The Bangles definitely had it in spades. Killer performance on Letterman.
I have been waiting for the camera to focus on the most beautiful woman here- Micki Steele!
The Letterman sound mix was always great, even back in the NBC days (much better than the typical SNL band mixes)
Debbi was so talented, Drummer, guitarist, whistler, Singer and Tamborinist
Most people had never heard of the Bangles at this time but you can just tell they’re going to be huge. Four gorgeous women who can play, harmonize and have a ton of charisma and a knack for catchy harmonies. Just a killer appearance.
Just one man's opinion here, but All Over the Place and the 2 songs they played this night are better than any of the hits they had off of Different Light and Everything.
I love how Going Down to Liverpool live is so drum-driven… I feel like their studio recording of it completely misses that vibe
I saw them in 2016 and Fred Armisen got on stage to play the drums so Debi could sing upfront.
I wish the Bangles made more albums in the 1980's and 1990's.
That performance of Liverpool is sick.
An early glimpse of the greatest band of all-time: The Bangles.
lol, fans are blind. The GoGos are in the Rock&Roll HOF. This group will NEVER snif the Hall.
@t-bo-lesotho This is late
I saw them as the Bangs in LA, Vicki used to let me carry her gear when venue was over age..this is was rt before they sold out and let the music biz process the soul out of them..
Nice of Vicki to dress up as Prince for this performance, Also interesting to see Suzy on a Strat rather than her Rickenbacker.
I was flat out in love with every person in this band. For every girl in love w/The Beatles in '64, here was a boy in love w/his version in '84.
Going down to Liverpool is such a great song. They sounded happy and relaxed as a band.
it's a great city too , love from Liverpool .. this song made possible by Thatchers cold capitalism and 80's greed.
I do agree
The actuel music are whitout joy lightness sexy clothes smiles
And they were super pro musicians
Debi's smile as she sings is enchanting :)
UB40 in your hand?
@@user-kl4bh4lq6r UB40 is the British Unemployment Form (that the band by the same name borrowed). The line in the song is that the person is going down to Liverpool to do nothing.
Two great gigs. 1984, and they knew that an appearance in the letterman show was a huge opportunity and they took it. A fantastic live band!
Their consolation prize for missing The Ed Sullivan Show owing to when they were born.
Ed would have flipped over them.
Saw the Bangs with Salvation Army , Dream Syndicate. GREAT SHOW
Damned good album, All Over the Place.
Their best, IMO.
Susanna who dances while putting her chords on her Rickenbacker
what a pleasure
No Rickenbacker here mate. First song she plays a Fender Strat, second song an acoustic guitar.
@@markschmidt6941 I think her acoustic guitar is a Koa.
Yes, wonderful, a bit like George!
Such a talented line-up. And what a great song. What a totally great song. A great rock and roll band.
Written by the great Kimberly Rew, ex Soft Boys, with Robyn Hitchcock and also Lead guitarist and head songwriter for Katrina and the Waves.
If anyone here has never seen the Pittsburgh 86 concert check it out. Undeniably their best captured performance ever their version of these songs there are incredible with such power!!
It's good to see that Debbie got to sing not just one of their songs but one of their best songs. It may have not been a Top 20 hit (not that i know of), but it's still a good song and Bangle fans like this song so that 's not bad either. It's just sad how much time has passed already.
Another grrreeat song by Kimberly Rew!
Females + bass = very cool
This was in the early days of The Bangles before they became famous.
The way Sue's voice hugs the guitar 🎸 music is beautiful.
All the members of the Bangles are special. They have I don't know how attractive. I like The Bangles as well as the music and the charisma and talent and Beauty of Susanna Hoffs in her solo stage. They are all great. I love her songs. I would like him to come and give a recital in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Greetings from Claudio Eduardo Di Virgilio to all the Bangles, I send you a big hug and a kiss with much respect and affection from San Nicolas de los Arroyos, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Such an excellent band
Damn, as they say, "them girls was tight!!" Live sound and harmonies just like the record. And the bass, YUMMYY tone, damn!!
That was great. Too bad they never captured that on their records.
I’m 30 years old. And I love this group. and Susanna Hoffs man she was hot at that time. And still dang hot
Joey Makowski Well, I am 60, and you are correct young man.
Trivia: I am four months older than Susanna Hoffs. She looks much better for her age, though.
Who cares how old you are, I'm a thousand
Early Bangles on The David Letterman Show
Vicki is rockin' that Les Paul!
They are very pretty*. They're also incredibly tight on both these songs. Vocals are well-rehearsed, the sound is full. These are pros, having some fun but obviously the performance comes first. These are my 2 favorite Bangs tunes (I suspect that's true of most), so it's nice to have these great performances in one video.
Thanks for posting...!
* This is 1984. EVERYBODY is very pretty...
rock Superpowers performing live, awesome...pb
Great energy - great performance! I was a 12 yrs old boy and discovering music, and (exploded 80s hair dryers and all) had a crush on them 😄!
Love this clip! Paisley Underground alumni. Before the music biz machine got to them and applied too much polish for my taste.
Exactly.
You are very right. Things like “Manic Monday” and “Walk Like an Egyptian”,etc. are examples of that. Wonderful musicianship.
Debbie rocks. I wish she sang lead on a lot more songs than she did. She was my favorite vocalist in the band.
One of the strongest voices of the 80s. They could all sing.
She has a distinct voice. I agree that it would of been nice to hear more songs with her singing. She reminds me a lot of Christine McVie.
Just Smoking Awesomeness ❤
Well done, Ladies! I was in Army flight school at the time, stressed and working 24 x 7,. and did not see this show, as I watched almost ZERO TV in those years. Just LOVE Bangles. The female Beatles, clearly. Thank you, Stephen, for posting this nice nostalgia visit.
Fantastic, under rated band. And god, Susanna is just so hypnoticly captivating.
Talented ladies!
Bangles and Sting? 80’s overload.
Actually, David Byrne was on the show the same night the Bangles were.
pero que genia es vicky como toca esa guitarra le ase sonar tan bien A y ahí mí faborita párese que tiene frió,😃 osea Michael Steele 🌹
That was pretty sick
Susanna Hoffs is my favorite Bangle girl.
Agreed
It's always been Vicki for me.
This was on TV so long ago that no one could hear the bass. The technology hadn’t been invented yet.
Hero is about Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate, another band of the 'paisley underground' scene in LA in the early 80's.
ang galing talaga ng bangles?
No eran buenas. ¡Eran buenísimas! :O
Fantastic :)
Awesome performance!
What a great band
Weird interlude with Sting stealing a station wagon lol
Hero takes a fall-my fave song of the 80's
wow, they could play
EIGHTIES BARNETS!!! Especially Debbie and Susannah! 'Going Down To Liverpool' will always remind me of my flying days when approaching Manchester Airport on the WSY arrival Liverpool was always visible weather permitting. Would have been to Isle of Man and Belfast flights using the same approach as well. If we played our cards right and had to Go Around for any reason then another spectacular view of Manchester was there to entertain the punters! Great memories all round :o)
Beautiful live version. Debbi Peterson is such an influence for other girls, she plays drums while singing. I think I adore her, and her voice is definitely my 1st fave!
Debbi does a great job. Have you ever seen Karen Carpenter sing & play drums? She was likely the best singer/drummer ever.....regardless of gender.
Yes, absolutely. Karen was amazing. Her drumming was mellow yet pretty complicated. She considered herself a drummer first and singer second despite having one of the most beautiful voices in pop. Debbie...not so much.
@Tess
Don Henley? Don't want to diss Karen at all though. It was a shame Richard wouldn't let her play drums really. Didn't fit the 'image' I guess.
@@fundies2 go listen to the Be With You video. Debbi Peterson may have the best voice of them all.
@Sasha Siregar with good reason Debbi’s vocals on the Be With You video is incredible.
Hero takes a fall may be my fave song of the 80's😁
The video matches the music! Kudos to whoever made this.
They were so great in the beginning, before the music business commercialized them.
Yeah for most musicians the ideal is to make no money playing music. Much better to work odd jobs for the rest of your life. Purity is its own reward..
they allowed it.
They wanted to be a 60's throwback band that wrote and performed great albums and great songs like in this performance. The industry wanted to sell singles and Susanna Hoffs' looks. The 80's was a funny world where women in the alternative scene were about art, but in the the corporate world wanted them to be about sex. It would wear anyone down.
This song is Boring
@@user-kl4bh4lq6r shows how clueless YOU are!
Great song great band . from California singing about being unemployed in Liverpool. Yet it works
Written by Canadian band "Katrina and the Waves"
awesome
Micki Steele we miss you. Please get in touch.
Hi do you mean that Micki is gone for ever ?
How cool!
Great to see this Dave appearance ( missed it but had heard about) Used to see both videos for Hero takes a fall & Liverpool played new on steady rotation on MuchMusic here in late 84/early 85.. first viewing of these talented Bangles ! Susie can't not be cute even if she tried !
I think you meant "can't not be cute". Unless you were actually trying to insult her.
One of the very few times where you don’t see Susanna play a Rickenbacker
Great performances! I love the high-energy version of "Going Down To Liverpool."
Bellboy!
very good to play the drum like that
Brilliant
Wow!
Yessssss I am 21 again!
Why were there no close-up's of Michael?
Apparently the director isn't a fan of redheads.
Unrecognizable from The Bangles who appeared a year earlier on American Bandstand (its on UA-cam check it out).
Was this really 40 years ago? Wow time flies!
They look quite different here in the pre-Manic Monday-era. But they were a great live band. Especially the instrumental part at 1:55 (which isn't included in the studio version) is top!
Kai Thomas
good rock singer
brilliant
When Letterman had a good show
jammin !!
I like that lyrics, "sittin' drinkin' thinkin'." Pretty bad ass I think
ang galing ng the bangles
Great, great band, regardless of what nay-sayers may mutter.
They were jealous.
This is for those complaining that this band had its sound evolve. Do I have to remind you that The Beatles sound of 1964 and The Beatles sound of 1969 are two different things? anybody can replicate early pre Beatles 60s sound at least for a while. There was a band that made it to stardom a few years before the Bangles, the stray cats. They got famous rehashing the late 50s early 60s rockabilly sound. And then they faded away because they never evolved. If every Bangles CD sounded like early 60s pre Beatles today nobody would give a crap about them.
That was a whole bunch of utter crapola you just shat....
Very glad to have this actual live performance, but a real pity it isn't stereo and the frigging cameraperson was focused on closeups of only Susanna.
Agree about the camera work. Letterman Show USUALLY had great camera work (for the time) for music acts (see my Nick Lowe Letterman "Raging Eyes" post). Not one solo shot of Michael Steele on bass - her part during the break (1:48) should have been featured. The show was not broadcast in stereo. Only Tonight Show was conducting test experiments in MTS stereo at time of this Letterman broadcast. So ease your mind, stereo does not exist and this is as good as it gets. Check out this click with improved MONO sound (sound level was low on this clip):
ua-cam.com/video/yRRHSH3v7Ek/v-deo.html.
From Wikipedia: "Sporadic network transmission of stereo audio began on NBC on July 26, 1984, with The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, although at the time only the network's New York City flagship station, WNBC, had stereo broadcast capability; regular stereo transmission of NBC programs began during early 1985."
*November 16 , 1984*
Susanna Hoffs is super energetic!
This seems to be when they started going power-pop and leaving the paisley underground sound behind.
Debbi is my favourite.
TRES Cool
Nice to see a Dave clip back from the classic era. The band set backdrop looks bigger than I remember it, and the music group got to do 2 songs, which I do remember, but I don't think happened that much in the later years.
That said, this band was (is?) great!
This was on a Friday night special that Letterman occasionally had broadcast. All the Friday night bands of this era got to play 2 songs. Please click on my name below the video title and see: R.E.M. (My Channel) , X (My Channel), Nick Lowe (My Channel) and Marshall Crenshaw (elsewhere).
Stephen Polly Thanks for the additional info. I don’t remember the Friday night special episodes, as I was in my twenties back in the 80’s and actually used to go out and have fun on Friday nights!
I was also wondering why Dave wasn’t wearing a suit!
Will always regret not going to the Brooklyn Zoo club to see them on a horrible, snowy night in 1982/3? I heard somewhere that the band sat around in circle for the few people who showed up and played Beatles and Mamas and Papas songs. Can anyone confirm this who attended or knows someone who did attend?
Stephen Polly Why don't you ask this question on the Bangles' website? You can contact Vicky, Debbi and Susanna there, and (who knows?) maybe you'll get an answer.
Not once did they put michael on camera.
Susanna Hoffs' hairstyle makes her look like Christy Canyon.
interesting rhythm own the toms =) very good rock band when there were 2 brown hair :)
They they started dressing like Prince…
A perfect bangles performance
Susan is perfect supported by Vicky's bassline
Agreed.
[It's Micki on bass, though.]
Only saw them live once. They opened for Mr. Mister. Even at that point, they
were still a really good rock and roll band. They could rock a stage. It’s a shame that most people know them mainly for “Walk Like an Egyptian” and
“Eternal Flame,” neither of which are even close to their best work. I can at
least tolerate “Manic Monday” as being catchy.
Well manic monday and walk like an egyptian isn't there work
John Brian Catedrilla They didn’t write the songs, but their recordings of them
is their work.
galaxyuno1 did you listen to their early garage sound early 60s influence days
John Brian Catedrilla Yes, I prefer their early work. I think “All Over the Place” is the best of their albums.
@@galaxyuno1 too bad since they signed for columbia records things change there musical style instead of being rock they became pop rock/ pop
hard to believe that some say that how people envisioned the 80's is a myth. Here we see just about all of those things in one video. the only things missing are leg warmers, oversize shirts, and off the shoulder sweaters.
Those were worn by the aerobics/Flashdance people. These indie chicks wouldn't be caught dead in 'em! ;)
Still, what we see here was done by their record company wardrobe people. It wasn't really true to the band. The Bangles dressed really cool, very 60s/mod chic prior to signing with a major label.
littlegoobie All of those styles would be a Major improvement
today.
People say that?
And cocaine
4:59 Susanna Steps
Seinfeld wants his pirate shirt back
An homage to Chrissie Hynde.
It's weird that the camera keeps focusing on Hoffs, when D. Peterson is singing the lead part.
Suzanna with a Strat
Vicki definitely looked better during the next couple of years and became a good looking lady for sure.
She looked even worse in prior years. And had an ADHD type stage presence that now looks flaky. Within a year of this, I assume Vicki went blonde, lost weight, and got rid of her twitchy stage presence. Debi looks great here, she started to look slightly worse in comparison after this as Vicki and Susan began to look better. And Michael is just Michael, just rock solid and consistent most of the years. Either you liked her look or you didn't. I did not like Michael's look during the 1980s, now I love it. Liked Vicki the most in the 1980s, now she is 3rd on my list behind Susan and Michael. Go figure. Debi, well, poor Debi. Being the drummer and the larger of the 3 girls, well ...
They said on the Joan Rivers show that the Byrds were one of their influences. I definitely hear some Byrds-style riffs in Hero Takes The Fall.
ChildOfThe1970s: "Dover Beach" is one of the greatest-ever pastiches of the Byrds (and the Rubber Soul era Beatles).
