Probably know this by now but for anyone else watching, when using a utility node like a black and white mask, under the "color balance" drop down in the file node, you'll see a checkbox that says "alpha is luminance" which should be enabled for a mask to work in the layered shader
Awesome, you have inspired me to start back into modeling. I used 3Ds max back in 1996. Graduated High School and was granted a pass to working for ILM for ten years. Maya has made things so much easier. What books would you suggest getting back into modeling with Maya.
80% of the tutorial has nothing to do with the Arnold Layered Shader node. Just trim the fat, have a scene ready before-hand (meshes, light setup, etc) and focus on the topic. You even had to google a dirt mask on the spot, in the middle of a tutorial.

You need to turn the plug in on in the plug in manager
. Then just press Tab and write "substance" and it should appear there
