@@joshuagibson2520 I think kids today are missing out. My parents were overprotective by the standards of the era but we got to do things that most kids today wouldn't dream of. As for computers, I got into quite a bit of trouble for making a logo on my C64 and bringing a print out to school. I had it as the cover on my trapper keeper for all of three classes before a teacher saw it and was absolutely sure it was some drug or occult thing. It wasn't. I was actually pretty religious for a 7th grader, but no amount of explanations or denial would sway her self righteous indignation.
When my mother got called in to a conference about it, she took one look at it, and asked what the problem was. Apparently they were demanding that she take my computer away from me. Fortunately my parents were not idiots. I used that thing all they way up until college.

Then in the afternoon, it wasnt so bad, was the second one off, but that sucked also as mum didnt trust me with a key to the house in case i lost it, so on the days she worked id be sitting in the shed for 3 hours unless it was sunny outside in which case riding bikes or the ride on mower or some such was all good, but during winter it sucked.

My favorite school bus stories all happened in rural south west Missouri.
When I was in kindergarten somthing broke on the bus.
I have no idea what but we all heard it and the driver felt it.
He limped it down the road a ways, pulled in to a driveway and said he would be right back.
He knocks on the door of the house and a guy comes out, talks to him and they go get an arc welder from the garage and proceed to fix whatever had broke under the bus.
Same school but different bus driver, Merle was our bus driver and he had a heart of gold.
There was one family that had a long driveway.
Merle drove their kids to the end of the driveway until the school told him he had to stop becase their trees were scratching up the roof of the bus.
On his day off he brought the bus, a chainsaw and his adult son.
Merle who had to be in his 60's climbed on top of the bus with the chain saw and pruned their trees while his son drove.
One other time our van ate a piston as we were driving past his house.
He towed us home and wouldn't take a cent.
He drove a school bus for the school 5 days a week and then drove a bus for his church on Sundays.

My bus driver in high school was called Doobie. He never spoke, and his glasses were the thickest I have ever seen. In the winter when it was -25 he would drive with the window open and he would take his glasses off and clean them while driving. We ended up in the ditch at least once a year but the old guy would power out like a champ. One year he almost crashed into a massive snow blower, and he also ran over my neighbours dog :(

Once a first time substitute bus driver missed a turn, everyone yelled "Stop" at the same time. She panicked and slammed on the brakes resulting with the rear wheels and axle detaching from the bus and the rest of the bus throwing sparks off the rear bumper as it scrapped on the road for another good 100 feet.
At one 2 year span I had a bus driver who only on the Friday afternoon ride home, like clockwork, would be three sheets to the wind. Did not want to have any open flames around him kinda drunk.
My stop was one of the last on a 32 miles bus route which brings me to the most entertaining bus drivers I've had. At this point our bus had an 8-track player and only one tape that played non-stop. The album "If" by the group "Bread". Back to the driver. He was a recent graduate of our high school so, I'm guessing he was about 20 years old. On occasion during the last few miles of our route he would let this gorgeous 12th grader sit on his lap and steer the bus and shift gears while he operated the pedals. Ah, the 70's.

I rode the bus for 12 years of schooling K-11 grade. Some years were tame, some were wild. When I got to high school the juniors/seniors at the back of the bus took to the sacred tradition of hazing the complete hell out of the freshman. They made us sit in the first 3 rows - there was a LOT of us! We all squeezed in - then rows 4-9 of the bus were empty. Then everyone else was in rows 10-16.
Imagine fraternity hazing without alcohol. The bus driver did NOT care. If you were made to crawl down the aisle while the bus was on the highway, with another freshman on your back - you did it, and the bus driver ignored everything going on.
Part of the route went on some very hilly rural roads. This bus driver enjoyed just flooring it down the hill - get the bus up to 55mph, then crest this hump in the road and send all the kids flying. You’d be sitting there, and if you were near the back of the bus, your head would hit the ceiling. One kid decided to time a jump when we crested the hump and got absolutely planted against the roof - their whole body! Then then fell straight down. They were a bit woozy after that. Likely had a concussion. Everyone roared.
One year, had a 1 hour school bus ride in, and the bus driver set the radio to the Howard Stern show every morning. I might have been 13?
What surprised me most about the school bus in high school was how casually kids would have sex on the bus. Carrying on conversations with kids in the row in front of them or behind them while performing acts or having acts performed on them.

As a country kid that got on the bus at the bus drivers house at 4:50 every morning. I to got to drive the bus, I unplugged the bus and started it on the cold mornings then feed the horses and had breakfast with my bus driver before we headed to school. Good memories.

    Story Time...
I was (and still am) best friends with a neighbor kid and we both rode the same bus. There are so many similarities with the bus and driver, I won't re-hash that stuff.
Among wives tales and legends was just how smelly and stinky Limburger cheese was, even though none of us had ever encountered it in our sheltered country lives.
Well, my neighbor buddy had found some in town and the grocery and convinced his mom to buy 2 pounds of it. The following Monday, this cheese made it's way into several of the heater vents on the bus. The following 2 weeks were quite chaotic as the bus was put out of service several times in an attempt to locate and eliminate the awful stench of spoiling Limburger cheese. When it finally did get back to regular service, we could STILL smell it for at least a month after that. The perpetrators were never apprehended.

Man I worked with a wonderful woman a few years back that had some wild schoolbus stories, A driver got the bus stuck and had all the kids get off and push from underneath the bus to get it out of the ditch. The older kids were warning the younger kids to turn their faces because the gravel spit up by the spinning tires hurt really bad. I'm not a storyteller like Chris or my old coworker though, it was right up there with any of Chris' stories.

My best experience was a bus driver who pulled up onto a sidewalk and flattened a sign to make way for an ambulance. We were in a right turn only lane at the end of a highway with a hospital on the corner. Traffic was backed up and there was no place for the other cars to go that didn't leave the school bus still in the way. She just yelled "Hold on!", cut the wheel, put her foot down, and pulled up onto the sidewalk. She probably got in some serious trouble for that, but the ambulance got through.

The idea of a six and seven year old driving a truck down the road to have lunch with their grandmother is so endearing. Also, they were allowed to do that. It is mind boggling to think how the U.S. got away from letting kids do things. To their own detriment even. If a parent let their kids do that today they social services would take the kids away. It's time we raise kids to be responsible again.

I think I was in 8th or 9th grade when the drive shaft fell off of our bus in front of the high school. The wire ring caught fire on that bus too at the first drop off one day. The bus driver joked and said he was trying to get us a new bus.

While in highschool I used to go to a tech school in the afternoon. This is when buses had manual transmissions. The entrance to the school was a straight 1/3 mile. So we used to do 1/4 mile runs where there were ropes around the shifter and grab poles, we would shift it from the seats while the bus driver worked the gas and clutch with his hands from the floor. we would tell him to steer left or right

We had a dead end road that went down to a fish hatchery that had a pretty big hump in the road. Whenever we had a substitute driver they didnt know to slow down or move to the center of the road so those of us in the back would hit the roof. One day our regular driver went to turn around at a turn around the county had made specifically for the bus. He went to back up and got distracted and went right off the back of the turn around into the ditch. The ditch was deep enough that the bus frame was sitting on the ground. This was back when buses still had the engines in the front so it had quite a bit of ground clearance.

All in all though, this whole video is great for me. My aunt drives a schoolbus, so I always felt a personal privilege in getting to ride it more than the other kids, or playing on it at my aunt's house when she wasn't working. Unfortunately in recent times, drivers even in the country don't seem to be allowed to take them home anymore. :/
Thank you for bringing back the memories, and sharing new ones!

I had a pub landlord once who used to let a double decker playbus park in his car park. Fitted out like a playschool.
When very drunk one evening he thought it would be a good idea to joyride this bus.....
After a few miles the police took interest in a weaving playbus late at night so have chase! I understand that within another mile he'd crashed the bus into a ditch and was obviously arrested.
