  • Episode 49: Anemia Symptoms And Treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients.
We will cover: Chronic Kidney Disease and Anemia, Anemia symptoms, anemia treatment, diet for anemia, symptoms of anemia, and anemia causes. Anemia is a condition where the body has fewer red blood cells than normal. Anemia symptoms for kidney disease patients: Anemia Symptoms include confusion and fatigue. Anemia Treatment for kidney disease: Can often be controlled with renal diet.
A deficiency of red blood cells causes low RBC (low rbc count) & low Hemoglobin in labs which is one of the symptoms of kidney problems. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. With anemia, red blood cells carry less oxygen to the body - particularly the heart and brain, causing fatigue, weakness, confusion, and headaches.
Anemia Kidney Disease: Anemia commonly occurs in people with chronic kidney disease
(CKD), with the most common anemia symptoms being fatigue and problems concentrating. Anemia might begin to develop in the early stages of CKD (Stage 3). Anemia tends to worsen as CKD progresses. Most people at CKD Stage 5 have anemia and suffer from most anemia symptoms as part of their kidney disease symptoms. Healthy kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO). EPO tells the bone marrow to make red blood cells, which then carry oxygen throughout the body.
In this video, I cover what is anemia, anemia symptoms, treatment for anemia, how anemia is related to CKD, the causes of anemia (including iron deficiency anemia), complications of anemia. With anemia treatments, I walk through iron supplements, erythropoietin injections, red blood cell transfusions, vitamin B12 and Folic Acid supplements, and renal diet options. With this information, you can work with your doctor to develop your treatment for anemia.

Thank you for your kind words. Everything I share comes from things I have learned on my journey and I encourage others to share. Too many doctors keep the options to fight kidney disease with diet and lifestyle changes (known as Conservative Management) from patients, forcing them onto dialysis. For many of us, we can delay or even prevent needing dialysis, which gives medical science more time to find alternatives that will help us.

My dad is 92 CDK patient. He has anemia and took the shot by himself maintaining haemoglobin around 110 for 8 months. His creatinine dropped suddenly from Gfr 5 to 3 (creatinine from 8.4 to 13.2) in less than a month. His haemoglobin also dropped to 101, still not too low but already feel tired and without energy, even tired to talk or listen. No swelling, still has appetite but has blood urine for 8 months. Afraid will get anemia even with the shot. Thank you for your videos, really informative.

My doctor told me my anemia was not that bad otherwise he'd give me some kind of shot(s). I bought the multi-vitamin (pro-renal), have been taking for over 2 months and have been feeling much better; have more energy and feel less tired and no dizzy spells. I'm waiting for blood test results from last week. We'll see how those play out. Thanks so much for all your help James. You are very much appreciated.

As a child i always had urine infections and naemia. The urine infections did go away but anaemia was always there. I was never checked for ckd. When i was diagnosed with ckd they did a lot of tests but couldn't figure out what caused my ckd until they took my health history. I was then told that it is most possible i was born with narrow ureters. Thank you for all the knowledge and advice you are sharing. When i was diagnosed with ckd i was lost trying to find more info about ckd. The info i could find was contradicting.

Thanks for sharing! One (of many) reasons I started sharing my journey on UA-cam was because of what you pointed out - it's hard to find accurate information about CKD and nearly everything you find online has something contradicting it. For me it was, and is, important to share my journey so that people could have a resources of a person who actually had CKD and was beating it. It was hard at first - I wasn't healthy, I looked sickly, and some people were extremely cruel in the comments - but I stuck with it and now looking back I'm so glad I did. Today I published my 49th video of tips and recommendations for fighting and beating CKD - I can't believe it. I also looked back at my first few videos and am just amazed at how far I have come.
I'm here to help - I want you to fight your CKD and kick it's butt! Then you can add a new chapter to your story and share it, inspiring even more people to make the difficult choices to beat CKD. Most of us get very limited help from our doctors, so it's our community that gives us the strength and knowledge to get better. Thanks again for sharing!

@@DADVICETV , {{{ Hugs }}} The work and the research that you have done and are doing is extremely valuable for yourself and many others. I am so happy for you that your kidney function has increased to Stage 3 so far. Sharhida Begum, may you improve by following Dadvice and at least improve your food choices and don't get too concerned if you can't get the supplements. People improve their kidney function by eating the correct foods & amounts of food without supplementing. Most supplements are synthetic which is why I improve my kidney function through food.

I eat red meat and am grateful that I have been tested for Anemia and my results are great. It is always best to get iron from food rather than a supplement. Supplements cannot do what real food can do for the body. Of course I understand that some people could get extremely low and will need a supplement temporarily while also increasing their iron intake from food. Great informative video James. I always look forward to your videos as I love factual education about the kidneys and the body. Thanks James for adding to my education :)

This is great to hear, James. I have been talking to my kidney doctor and my blood doctor about it but they did not acknowledge the connection of anemia and ckd. I happen to have myelofibrosis (a form of blood cancer) and I've been blaming it for the anemia. At the same time, I wanted my kidney to get better so I could produce red blood cells. I have been having blood transfusion and using diet as a weapon to conquer my situation. Thank you for your affirmation, James.

And you so right why does dr.s not give all this help. I find not even the nutritionists help one with diets, thy just give you a stupid piece of paper that not even my dog 🐕 would stick to it. Thy don’t help with food and recipes....I was anemic. Not sure if I still am but I know my dr. Didn’t give me any supplements. I understand better about anemia now , didn’t know it can affect so much in the body by not supplying enough oxcigen .

When it comes to managing anemia, you need to look at your diet. Make sure you are getting enough Iron, the B vitamins, and some vitamin C. Your diet needs to be balanced - your body needs to have the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and hormones it needs so that it can focus on creating more red blood cells and hemoglobin. If your diet isn't balanced, then your body has other problems to deal with and it can't focus on managing anemia. A dietitian can be a HUGE help when it comes to diet.

Your doctor is correct that there is no cure - but THERE ARE things you can do to slow down, stop, or reverse kidney damage. When I was diagnosed I was Stage 5, scared and shriveled kidneys. I was told there was "Zero Chance" of getting better and that I'd be dead in 45 days without dialysis. I never went on dialysis, and I'm still alive10 months later! Diet and lifestyle changes are critical to improving your kidney health and living a normal life without the symptoms and challenges of kidney failure. There is HOPE!!!!! And science is making progress on alternatives to Dialysis - so we all need to be as healthy as we can so that we will be here and ready when medical science makes these alternatives available.
