How the times have changed! I used to teach my middle school students about pop music & culture from the 50’s to the present day. Here’s how I introduced them to the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet: I’d say, “I’m thinking of a TV show about a real life family, and the dad’s name is Ozzie...” They’d all call out, “The Osborne’s!” Then I’d say no, show them the cover of the video box The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and play for them Ricky’s first singing appearance on the show (4/10/57) when he sang Fat’s Domino’s “I’m Walkin’.” I told them Ricky was the first true “video star” in that he became famous because of his appearances on TV. But my favorite clip from that episode was at the end when all four of the Nelsons sang a song together in harmony. That surely must have been one of Ozzie’s proudest moments! Thanks for posting the interview!

Glad you also saw him in concert, Cathi. He was a real legend in so many ways and left this world much too soon. He came to San Jose in the late 1950's or early 1960's and I would have loved to see him then but I was too young. The 1981 show was ok but the dusty fairgrounds was NOT the place to see him perform. The show started about 45 minutes late and the stage was a platform on the speedway for races. Still, though, I can say that I saw Rick perform live and I really miss all the Nelsons!
I have often thought when so many kids having abusive or drunk parents, watching shows like Ozzie & Harriet, or Leave it to Beaver, or Family Ties, or Different Strokes, etc.--must see what an ideal family looks like.
They had their own problems, especially surrounding Rick. That was the thing: They really were like many families in this country, not "idealized" at all. The 1950s weren't like this at all-women continued in the labor force despite social pressure to remain at home, and all of the "mothers" on these shows were career women, after all. The actors who played Robert Young's kids in "Father Knows Best" were all from single-parent homes and thought of Young like a father. Nothing is ever what you think it was when it came to the 1950s. It wasn't a good era at all for women and racial minorities.
Harriet Nelson never got over Rick's death in 1985--she essentially became reclusive and didn't grant interviews and ultimately passed away from COPD/heart failure in 1994
Even as an adult our sons are still our "little boys". It would be very tough getting over the sudden death of a child And they were all so very close connected. .
It must have been devastating losing her son Rick. I was privileged to meet both Ozzie and Harriet once long ago and they were very lovely people. Ozzie was very outgoing and spoke with me for that few minutes as though we were old friends. I miss all of them.
Check out the "Remembering Ricky" retrospective on UA-cam, which contains a lot of very interesting information. With all due respect to the memory of Pres. & Mrs. Eisenhower, for many of us The Nelsons were America's real First Family. Also, as a 73 y.o. looking back, the 50's were an ideal time in the history of America in the 20th century. To be sure it wasn't perfect, and some people can find something wrong with ANYTHING if they try hard enough, but I remember it as a time when everyone seemed to get along pretty well. It was an entirely different world from the America that we are living through at present.
I use to watch every show and I really liked it. I really miss Rick Nelson's music. I know David was married to a woman named June, but I cannot remember if Rick was still married when he was killed to Kristen.
if you have a converter box they the old shows are on 64 the willa channel in what ever state you live in. they may be on the cable channels i dont know
Maybe better than any others, the Nelsons were popular being more plain than extreme. That they made the enjoyment of each other in everyday ways with an undercurrent of mutual love sadly bores people now. Ozzie made a successful living of showing his family as built around solving problems in their kitchen. See the calm joy and peace of Harriet at the center, and how this is passed on to the boys and the audience even here. Reality TV that warms the heart? & so Catholic.
David wasn't that great looking when he was young but got better looking as he got older as in this interview. Ditto for Rick, who was rather homely as a kid. Who would have thought he would have turned out drop-dead gorgeous in adulthood? He gave Elvis Presley, in Presley's prime, a run for his money in the looks department.
Rick was a great child actor, had a beautiful singing voice, also very handsome, but does not appear comfortable speaking one on one! I though ozzi was hilarious on the old show, ( I caught the reruns on utube)
I loved the Ozzie and Harriet Show as a kid. Ricky was my favorite singer in the 60's. He was so dreamy! I'm sorry that his marriage didn't appear to be a good one, but hopefully he found happiness before his death 😢💔
Must have been awkward for David, from being the older brother that the girls liked to being overshadowed by his younger brother and referred to as Ricky Nelsons brother. He still had the wealth and fame, they were born into money and showbusiness, but his role became that of supporting his brother who was becoming the star attraction of the show and also a highly successful pop singer Imagine people wanting to know you because of who your kid brother is and asking non stop questions about Ricky all the time
I was always angry about the way the press reported on Rick Nelson's death in 1985--Mr. Nelson's touring plane crashed on New Years Eve near Dallas where he was going to perform-it was reported a fire developed on the plane likely due to Mr. Nelson "free basing" cocaine--the investigation later showed that the modified DC-8 plane had a defective heater that caught fire--but Mr. Nelson was nevertheless defamed by this
The pilot and co-pilot that survived would know... Maybe the original story came from them... And why was a heater needed on the plane in the South? They wouldn't be on the plane barely an hour.

Rick looks like his mom, ,Dave looked like Ozzie!
If you look at photos of Ozzie when he was young, you'll see that Rick did take after his father.
If it wasnt for theNeslon i wounld fell what i feel I want to Thank you for thank ❤❤
Wow, that's interesting!
Once again, the interviewer (David Hartman) kept cutting them off while they were talking. Drives me nuts.
& so Catholic.
leev jr Yes these were real, decent Americans. Nothing like the attention seeking people on TV today.
Ricky and David in public schools? Wow. I bet Ricky got all the girls.
I THINK DAVID WAS HOT TOO!
@@Kashaslove so true. They both were super easy on the eyes
@@Kashaslove absolutely, even in more ways than Rick.
They were graduates of Hollywood High School. David later went to USC, while Rick didn't bother furthering his education beyond high school.
Rick was a cutie..handsome shy and a good guy ..better looking then E.P
SWEET LADY NOW ALL GONE SAD LOSS RIP
Rick was a great child actor, had a beautiful singing voice, also very handsome, but does not appear comfortable speaking one on one! I though ozzi was hilarious on the old show, ( I caught the reruns on utube)
Great family, all of them..
All in Heaven.
I loved the Ozzie and Harriet Show as a kid. Ricky was my favorite singer in the 60's. He was so dreamy! I'm sorry that his marriage didn't appear to be a good one, but hopefully he found happiness before his death 😢💔
thank you I thought he was divorced before that.
Must have been awkward for David, from being the older brother that the girls liked to being overshadowed by his younger brother and referred to as Ricky Nelsons brother.
He still had the wealth and fame, they were born into money and showbusiness, but his role became that of supporting his brother who was becoming the star attraction of the show and also a highly successful pop singer
Imagine people wanting to know you because of who your kid brother is and asking non stop questions about Ricky all the time
David was just as PHENOMENAL as Rick. Each had their own personalities, thank goodness!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
is harriet a relation what a nice family
I had not seen either shows in ages Ozzie and Harriette an I think his name I'd David Hartman the host or what is name again
@@PK-bh1ww They need a heater because even if it's 80 degrees on the ground it's like between 30-40 at the altitude where small engine planes fly.
@54jeanmarie Happy to share.
Sounds like Ozzie and Harriet were not what we think of as showbiz parents. They were exceptional. They wanted their sons to have normalcy. ❤
