- Ultimately, NHL 23 feels best suited to series newcomers. It’s a solid release, with a wealth of fresh animations and finetuned AI delivering a more authentic experience but it’s likely to feel like DLC rather than a new game to players of last year’s edition.
Used to play these games a lot. Kinda miss it to be honest. Not gonna buy a console for just one game though. Wish they'd release on PC again.
It is on pc. Hence "Windows" being listed as one of the consoles in opening.

@@dr.loomis4221 the goalies are smarter & better same with the AI, the passing is much improved & the game overall plays smoother, the desperation goals are cool & very satisfying when you make em you can make some epic shots it's just an improved game overall, I feel like there's no cheese goals or moves this year as well you actually have to put effort to score & win

As far as I know, they can't. EA has a contract with the NHL so no other company can make NHL games.

Pre game annimation cut scene is for 5 teams come on ea and it last 5 seconds

Maybe change the settings on your PlayStation? Also maybe mess around with the camera on your sliders try Dynamic low

Amazing aint it? The mid 90s games were just beloved, they introduced the skill stick and creating your own online league player stats... and then 2015 on it went to shit and I haven't played ir since.
Too much focus on masots, glowing boards, gimmicky gameplay additions, and rip off card pack nonsense. They really have screwed the pooch.

They’ve killed hockey and football games, not to mention battlefield, and their crappy NBA live games. As a nearly 40 year old man it makes me even more disgusted because I’m plenty old enough to remember way back when EA actually GAVE A *HIT AND MADE GREAT QUALITY GAMES!! Madden games were AMAZING UP UNTIL ABOUT 2010. NHL games were also great, what is so frustrating with the NHL titles is that unlike the NFL, EA DOES NOT OWN EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO NHL licenses, but apparently there aren’t enough people who play them to make it worth it for another company like 2K (who have also greatly declined although not anywhere near the level of EA) to STEP UP and make a good/great NHL game. Ultimately WE, THE FANS ARE TO BLAME! I hate saying that, but at the end of the day EA would give us a better product if people would STOP BUYING IT EVERY YEAR!! If people finally got together and BOYCOTTED THE GAME FOR A YEAR AND TOLD EA WE WON’T BUY YOUR GAME UNTIL YOU GIVE US NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENTS!! They need to take a year or two off and actually PUT EFFORT INTO IT, instead of the usual COPY AND PASTE BS WE GET EVERY YEAR!! It’s been said a thousand times already but it literally is basically a $70 ROSTER UPDATE!

Wow. So many lies making the game seem more functional than it is. You cannot recreate the original 6 - you cannot have helmetless players offline "because it isn't realistic" but only online where it affects others. You cannot create anything in Gretzky's era because players cannot wear 99 period, while you could make that possible in 22.

The fact is EA IS A GREEDY P O S COMPANY!! They literally only dedicate real resources and people to games/modes with so called “micro” transactions. They COULD NOT CARE LESS about people who spend $70 on their games….they only care about the IDIOTS who spend money IN THE GAME AFTER THEY’VE PAID anywhere from $70-$100!! What’s sad is they don’t even put in a lot of effort into those games. Look at FIFA, their CASH COW. The make MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR FROM “MICRO” TRANSACTIONS ALONE AND YET THE FIFA LEAGUE (or whatever it’s called, it’s soccer so I honestly couldn’t give two *hits about that p*s*y a** “sport” I use that term loosely) TOOK EA’s EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS AWAY BECAUSE OF HOW POOR THAT PRODUCT IS….so it’s not simply a case of the amount of people who are dedicated to the game because that game is far and away the most important game to EA which means it’s going to get the most attention and resources devoted to it. It’s simply a matter of EA as a whole REFUSING TO PUT THE EFFORT AND RESOURCES INTO ANYTHING BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY CAN 1/4 ass these things (I said 1/4 because they can’t even be bothered to 1/2 ass it) AND DESPERATE SPORTS GAMERS WILL STILL BUY THEM BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE ANY OTHER OPTIONS….EA has been allowed to essentially create MONOPOLIES WITHIN THE SOCCER, FOOTBALL AND HOCKEY GAMES!!
The truth is, WE THE CONSUMER NEED TO STAND UP AND SAY “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH….WE ARE NOT BUY YOUR POS GAMES ANYMORE” AND ACTUALLY FOLLOW THROUGH ON IT! I myself had bought EVERY SINGLE MADDEN FROM ‘97 all the way till ‘19 and I refused to buy another madden title after that DOG*HIT THAT WAS MADDEN ‘19. I have reached the same conclusion with NHL. I’m not saying it’s as big a piece of *HIT as Madden but IT ISN’T FAR BEHIND!! I’m a nearly 40 year old fully disabled combat veteran, I survive on a very limited and fixed income, so buying a game for $70 takes several months to save up for….why would I (or anyone for that matter) give my hard earned money to a *HIT COMPANY LIKE EA WHO DOESN’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS? THEY HONESTLY DON’T EVEN TRY TO HIDE THE FACT THEY DON’T CARE AND THAT THEY DON’T EVEN TRY TO MAKE A GOOD GAME! One of the biggest pet peeves of mine over the last 2 NHL games has been the fact that at the start of the games they don’t even show the goalies stats anymore, and as someone who plays locked on the goalie position it is INFURIATING!!!

i got this game for pretty cheap after not playing one in years. all i can say is that i miss the late 90’s and early 2000’s hockey games lol i know they’re going for a more realistic style of game but it’s so incredibly unsatisfying now. checks seem weak as fuck, shots are underwhelming, and holy fuck, where are the passes going half the time? it says you can aim them but i’m pushing down and my guy passes back to the point lol these games just seem like a mess overall. they need to bring back nhl hitz if these main games are gonna be such shit.

This game definitely does not feel like last years game other than the menus. The gameplay is so much smoother than last years. The passing feels WAY better than last year’s. The puck doesn’t just move through defenders like it has for so many games in a row. The graphics are slightly better with shading upgrades. The upgrade to setting strategies is an extremely nice touch. I wouldn’t pay full price. I don’t pay full price for any sports game. But if you are wondering if 23 is just a roster update, it definitely isn’t. The gameplay is so much better than last year. This year is definitely an upgrade.

any synching issues? Back on 2022 after the whistle it would stay frozen on the teams logo or a player name top right corner saying synching while you hear the play in the background

I feel the same way I think it's a great game I only play offline controlling my franchise therefore I have no complaints I bought it on sale at Target Black Friday definitely getting my money's worth

How do people play with that awful AI telling them what to do?
U can turn it off numbnuts, u can turn off the passing arrows ,the shot titles,etc...
I never played 22 but played the heck out of 21. Here are several ways in which NHL 21 is a better game than NHL 23, (albeit we are almost a decade removed from greatness from this franchise.) Presentation… Sure this years game gives us the globe sticks in the stands, but that’s only about once every 10 games and lasts for 5 seconds. No longer do you get to see players stretching or coming through the tunnel, skating on the ice as fans cheer with loud music. You only get a brief national anthem. It doesn’t show who is in net or goalie stats anymore. Absolutely nothing happens to alert you when there is a change in net, so gone is the satisfaction of chasing a net minder. The cut scenes feel very rushed. The replay system is completely arcade and almost nonexistent compared to previous versions of the game. The referees for NHL games includes Asian women just to be woke. But hey, at least this game has referees. We can’t say that about Madden anymore. The only good thing they added was putting the roster names on the Stanley Cup. Let’s talk about gameplay. NHL 21 was better because you had to be careful not to take a tripping penalty when using the often overpowered poke check button. In this years game I can hammer that button all day long and never trip anybody even if I try. Goalies make way too many hall of fame saves to rob perfectly executed one timers close to the net. I guess that’s better than the drunk goaltenders we’ve seen in some of these games. NHL 21 got it just about right imo. The AI playing against the computer is just ok. I enjoyed 21 a little more. Players almost always skated to a logical place in a logical manner. This game only makes improvements in the places that don’t really matter if you only play franchise mode with real teams. I play offline and this game is geared towards the ADD driven online youngsters who don’t have the patience to enjoy a realistic presentation. Decking around defenders without loosing control of the puck is a lot easier in NHL 21. I don’t know how awesome you have to be at the game to make it fun and effective in 23.
I've always been into hockey since watching the mighty ducks as a kid and remember playing NHL 95 on super nintendo. I live in Georgia so not alot of places to play real hockey so this game might be right up my alley.

One problem with these yearly sports games is no innovation because all they do is copy and paste and there is no competition so EA are the gatekeepers of most of the sports games. They should release a game and then take one year off and maybe offer a mid year roster update for each title. Doing these every year is why they get worse.

Though I do not support annual sport title releases, I question why this only gets a 7. After 25 attempts surely they've made the best product yet. Perhaps my questioning is of the reviewing criteria.

After NHL14 I never bought another one. They all became crap! That is until NHL21! I fell in LOVE with it straight away when I bought it last week lol! Now, looking at NHL23 - looks like I will buy that one too HAHA! It's basically NHL21 but BETTER as it seems! Nice!
