One of the keys to this defense is to make sure you apply high pressure on ball at all times so that she is uncomfortable and has difficulty locating open players.

Thanks coach - I'm learning the game as an assistant HS coach - any recommendation for how to beat this zone from the offense side of things?

Cradle over to the left, rotate and pass back up top and cut through, rotating around until you get the right girl who shoulder fakes the pass back and dodges to goal. Backside cut and replace the entire time.

Just my opinion, but this play doesn't work. I tried this and all that happened was that my offensive players passed the ball all the way across to the other side and then back again, essentially wearing out the "backer" until she was exhausted and then took advantage of a one-on-one when the backer was standing, bent over, trying to catch her breath. Literally about 30 seconds into trying this drill, we gave it up.

It does work if you've got the athletes for it and if you high pressure the ball. I agree that if you use the backer as part of a zone a good team will simply move the ball to tire the backer or hit the zone with a bulldog and blow it up. BUT, if you stay in a man to man situation and pressure the ball and take away the adjacents it can be VERY effective. You also need to have a few different athletes, not just bodies, but athletes running as the backer. Works very well that way

@@mjvitelli74 I disagree. I think the idea of a backer is a bit unnecessary because it tires out a player for no reason. I think a better alternative is to have everyone be a "backer". Basically, you have one defensive player be actively on ball and have the person on either side slide over and be the "backer". They would leave a player open but the next person just takes on 2 players and if everyone is shifting correctly, whoever has the ball will have 2 defensive players on them and the defense with 2 offense won't have to worry as their players are low risk. If they were to pass the ball, everything just shifts. I have played many types of man on man and zone variations and this has been the best. Leaves no room for running into each other or allowing any fast breaks

@@mjvitelli74 Okay, I"m coaching a collegiate club team now. We're going to try this tonight and see how it goes. Last time I tried this, it was a H.S. team.

@@lindseyramirezzz agreed. I saw your version of it in action in our regional HS semifinals last year. When the ball moved, the previous on-ball defender shifted to double the ball. Adjacents were always locked off and the ball was doubled. Worked beautifully. To beat it required the player to break the doubleteam or find a quick skip pass

what program do you use to create this video?

I used a program that I wouldn't recommend anymore, but what I would recommend is using Apple Keynote which is now free after you set up a free icloud account. Once you do that you can use a transition tool between slides called "Magic Move" and then all you need to do is make a copy of each slide, make minor changes, and keep doing this until you are done. Once done you can play the slide show and it will move all the pieces just as you laid them out. For the voice over I now use a program called "Screenflow", it a bit pricey at about $80 but its awesome for all kinds of voice over videos with annotations. Hope that helps.
