    I agree with Bart I would rather have two or more Ardbeg 10-year-olds. But if you are a Peathead you’ve got to buy an Octomore at least one time so you can say “I’ve had an Octomore.” I bought the Octomore 8.1 and really liked it but I would not spend that much money for another one.

    I am big on all Ardbeg's, Laphroaig 10, and Lagavulin 11. Just tried the Octomore 13.1 and BOOM....explosive big, big peat. It was just a great hit when it first arrived. Immediate warm flavors melt to a long finish. There is no comparison between the initial peat hit of the 13.1 and other big peat scotch whiskies. It has a very good ABV value as well as a generous ppm. Every peathead should try an Octomore and then decide if the cost is too high.
    Final analysis = The 13.1 is a special experience but not worth the $245 price tag. For the best bang for the buck, keeping that Islay peat in focus, reserve shelf space for Kilchoman Sanaig, Ardbeg 10, and Lagavulin 11.

    Needless to say: love the Octomores I've had so far. Have yet to try this 13.1... if I manage to pass the payment counter (which I doubt).
    Thanks for reviewing anyway.

    I got the 13.4 (5-year Virgin Oak) from the distillery... my first Octomore. Worth it for the experience, but not sure I'd buy one every year.

    The 6.3 is the first I remember that every peat head loved!

    Yep, we just did an Ardbeg shootout for an upcoming review. What surprised me was how similar Jean and I were in our rankings. I'm more into peat than she is most of the time. The Octo sounds like a nice edition to have on hand for a home bar. Cheers.

    This is a great review.
    I recently tasted the 10.2 and was so impressed I bought a bottle.
    I would only buy Octomore having tasted beforehand as I’ve tasted versions in the past that I haven’t personally enjoyed. Don’t understand the numbering system!
    if you like peat, you’ve gotta try an Octomore once in your life!

    Picked this up on sale for $180. Very good. Kilkerran Heavily Peat batch 2 did well against this one in a blind shootout

    The octomore point collection is one i frequently purchase and just don’t mind paying for. Love this distillery, I have lots of bottles of the islay barley as well. All good stuff! Bart, you can see peat is where your passion is. I don’t buy Ardbeg 10 anymore since uigeadail is only $10 more.

      The Uige is great but man the Ardbeg core range could be all the peat I ever got and I would be happy. Such a good range.

    I think i mentioned this before…
    I had an Octomore bottle 4 weeks I moved from NY to FL. The local liqour store cut me a deal because i was a great customer for a couple of years.
    Sadly never was able to try it because in transit it of traveling down to FL bottle broke. Out of all 30 bottles of scotch i sent down, that was the only bottle that didnt make it. The other bottles in that box made it. All were wrapped with care, somehow that one didnt make it.
    I am kicking myself for not putting it in my suitcase or the wifes but i was worried of airlines lose my suitcase.
    Now how prices are I really doubt i will for a while get another Octomore. I will hav to order because all the liqour stores around me doesnt carry much scotch. Online retail is really high.
    My wife calls the peated whisky “Rome is burning.”
    Cheers.

      For the love of Pete, that's a really sad story! Would highly recommend you hunt down a replacement as it is one of the finest whisky's around. I have a healthy collection starting with the 6.3 and moving up to the 11.3 and also a few of the 10 yr versions so I'm all set.

    • @AnthACD
      @AnthACD 11 місяців тому +1

      @robertzemko6590 I had in my suitcase Johnnie Walker Blue Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal that made it through the airport along with 5 other scotches in the wife and ours suitcases. I am not going to open the JW blue. Also, got an Orphan Barrel 26 year old Single Malth scotch called Forgers Keep. There some other nuggets that made the trip. Sadly that bottle didn't.
      I am keeping and eye on some of the Octomores. Sadly my wife and to quit her job because of health reasons so finances are little tight. Shit happens, just got to roll with thr punches. Luckily I have a nice stash of scotches. Got some scotches before prices went up. I have 27 bottles left.
      Hoping around Christmas I get a nice scotch. Like I always do.

    First peat experience was the Lag 16 at a Co-workers retirement party… had no clue what I was doing, took it as a shot as everyone else was doing tastings. 20 minutes later I’m in my truck driving home still tasting the finish, and at that moment I needed to find it and know more!

    The only Octomore I've had is the 13.4 but I agree that it is surprisingly "light" and I didn't expect it. Definitely not the place to start with peat but is a definite must try.

    Total wine by me has these for 240 before tax. I got a promotion from whiskey kingdom in the UK and was able to get it for 207 all in. I still have an opened it, but one of these days I will and I hope I get the same tasting notes and enjoyment.

    1st peated whiskey I ever had was Octamore, needless to say it wasn't a pleasant experience. Hair or my body literally stood up 😂, I do love them now, The last one I purchased was 12.2 and it was $200.

    If the Port Charlotte is heavily peated the Octomore had to go super.... I wish I could find one, never seen Ocatomore here in my part of NC.

    I don't know about this particular batch, but every Octomore I've ever had blows Ardbeg 10 out of the water. It does seem like the newer Octomores haven't been as heavily peated as previous batches though. Every batch I've had has been at least 170ppm.

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 11 місяців тому +1

      PPM doesn’t really matter since it is measured before distillation. Depending on the cuts off the still a 50 PPM whisky can be more smoky than a 150 PPM

    • @Vortex1988
      @Vortex1988 11 місяців тому

      @@steveno7058 It might not matter between different distilleries, but if it's the same distillery and the same process, then it's a pretty reliable measure of how peaty the whisky is.

    I find octomore more clean than ardbeg laphroaig and lagavulin
    The peat, even if higher ppm, is not dominan it seems to be more balanced. What really surprise me is the alchol absence at the nose, from a young spirit with high abv i expect alcholic punch at the nose
    are also interesting the double matured ar the finish in wine they produce

    I honestly don't get the heavily peated appeal, to me that's all I can taste is peat... and it tastes like a used bandaid... no thank you.

      Sometimes that’s all a drinker gets. But it can grab some people on first sip or like me a certain bottle just opens up the peat world and you want more.
