Inkling's story is similar to Pichu and Chrom's. Their hype early on was due to a fresh and unoptimized meta, along with players unfamiliar in the MU as they were new additions in this type of environment. (Especially with the lack resources such as frame data and hitbox visuals) Not even mentioning DLC taking the limelight.
Before watching this video, Lucina would be my answer. She went from pretty definitively being the best sword fighter to being ranked 8th best sword fighter on the current tier list. Pretty much every early top 10 included her, but now she might not even be high tier.
5:08 - Inkling was also given buffs to her Forward and Up Tilt, F-Tilt dealing more damage and U-Tilt having an extended hitbox from behind but neither significantly gave Inkling an edge over the roster for the most part.
Great analysis of Inkling's evolution in Smash Ultimate! It's fascinating to see how a character that was initially top-tier has dropped so much in the meta over the years. The way players gradually learned to counter her strengths, like the Splat Roller and her neutral game, really highlights how important adaptation is in fighting games. It's also interesting that despite her weaknesses, players like ShirYuki are still able to make Inkling shine, showing that there’s still potential left to explore. I’m hoping we might see a bit of a resurgence in future tournaments! Thanks for the retrospective.
Big thanks to the high level Inkling Discord for their insight on Inkling and helping me with parts of the script! Let me know what you'd like to see next, and I hope you enjoyed the video 🙏
It's Inkling, always was overrated. People complained about Side B even though it was easily countered. Character fishes for grabs and spams bair makes her very linear. She lacks any real combo game when compared to her contemporaries like Sheik, Pikachu, or Fox that can combo or frame trap you into a combo. She struggles to kill reliably. Splat Bomb are too costly as a resource that has very low kill power or usefulness in neutral tool compared to other bombs. A lot of buttons that are lacking as tools. She's great at edge guarding...for a different game. Ult has a purposely designed philosophy for insane recoveries just for casuals to keep matches going.
Ult was purposefully designed with speeding up matches, with aerials suffering less endlag and every characters being generally faster, both vertically and horizontally. Matches last shorter, *USUALLY* (Sonix is the only player who even relied on running out of time, I don't think there is anyone else doing that) considering everyone kills eachother faster with the increased speed and 1.2x damage multipliers in 1v1s.
@@vivelespatat2670 Your first paragraph is right, faster control of the characters was intentionally designed for more fun handling the character esp with the universal jump squats and aerial endlag changes. However, the game is designed primarily for Casuals in mind and recoveries were intentionally made ridiculous so that players could get back on stage and continue fighting for more enjoyment. Just as you mentioned about the multipliers, it decreases with more players increasing the amount of scrapping.
The fact it was obvious this was gonna happen during the first month or two of the game makes me both proud that I called it and depressed because it happened. Hopefully next time they remember to give her kill moves.
There are so many characters in Ultimate that would be top 20 right now if it weren’t for the polarizing DLC releases. Almost every DLC release in Ultimate to date, offered an unfavorable or outright bad matchup to Ness, knocking him down far further than he ever needed to be. Ness is now largely meta-irrelevant in a game where he’s stronger than he’s ever been.
Remember when armoured Samus was considered a mid tier at best offline, and when ZSS was called "good samus"? Early Ultimate is hilarious to look at with a modern eye
I think Joker fell off for me. He wasn't useful for me anymore in Ultimate so when I dropped him in five seconds for Sephiroth, I NEVER went back to using him. However, I trained my Joker amiibo and that toy is a MONSTER. I have both Joker and Sephiroth's amiibo and they're my two favorite boys! And both of them are terrifying!
Inkling main here. Inkling isn't that bad versus Steve. No idea what that Discord is talking about. She has a very powerful tool to fight against walls. You can throw a Splat Bomb over the wall forcing Steve to sheild and allowing for approaches. It's pretty full proof, you just need to be careful of Minecart, but this can be baited. It's still a hard matchup because Steve is broken, but Fox and Peach cause more problems for Inkling than Steve. Peach can't be buried by Roller outside of tech chases due to Float while also just being a lot harder to deal with in neutral while Fox just runs Inking over in nuetral and can't be comboed because he falls so fast that he falls out of Inkling combos. Also not listing Snake as a notable good matchup is odd considering it's an even better matchup for them than any of those you listed (Splattershot blows up grenades, even latger uthrow uair window). And for aspiring Inkling mains, Inkling's poor oos game is somewhat mitigated by parrying or by using movement over sheilding to avoid attacks. Inkling has a top 5 dash in the game. If you can shift your muscle memory to dash certain attacks rather than sheild and get good enough at parrying most of the rest, this weakness becomes less problematic. It's a tall ask and it's why I'd argue Inkling is harder to use at high level than many other characters but it's feasible. Also, SPAM GRAB, ESPECIALLY DASH GRAB. Like the UA-cam said, holding sheild is good against mashy Inklings. You can use this to your advantage. Conditioning sheild with bair and Roller attempts can net you a LOT of free grabs. Make use of empty land grabs too, and look to crossup sheilds against characters with weak out of sheild options behind them (SIGNIFICANT ROB WEAKNESS).
This is a great question. I genuinely think it's probably Fox. He's always been towards the bottom end of top 10 throughout the game's lifespan and even now he's typically considered to still be there.
