Χρόνος (Chronus) & Κρόνος (Cronus/Saturn) were two different Greek deities.
Hades was not considered evil by the Greeks, only by Hollywood. The most evil thing he did in Greek mythology was to take his wife from her mother, but even then he agreed to have them live together for half of the year. Realistically thought, Persephone was worshiped as an underworld goddess centuries before Hades.
I know, Hades was seen as a peaceful ruler of the damned.
It is interesting hearing your voice for the first time. Keep up the great content!
Thank you!

Funny how Romanian zeu sounds more similar to Greek Zeus than to Latin Deus. But the change from "d" to "z" is quite common.
d > z is a common consonantal changing called lenition in IE languages

Also, in Romanian, Earth is called Pamant, after the word for Pavement in Latin. It is most likelly because we didn't believe in the religion of the Romans to the extent that the western nations did. When asked on what we walked on, we mentioned the materials and not ground itself, pamant as it's called, in romanian
Like italian earth, dirt, land, ground all the same word. Terra.

I love your videos. I hope that you can make much more. In Romanian the sky is the same as the other romance language. In Romania sky is cer. And the pronouncing is almost the same.

In Greek today the planets are called:
Ερμής Αφροδίτη Γη,
Άρης Δίας Κρόνος,
Ουρανός Ποσειδώνας Πλούτωνας
I really enjoyed your video on the etymology of the planets, thankyou so much for making it! I speak English, Spanish and some German, but I have been learning Greek, Italian, Arabic, and Chinese!
Tusen takk
In French it’s a mixture of Latin roots and anglo-saxon roots:
• Mercure
• Venus
• (la) Terre - for some reason the French always refer to it with the definite article “la”
• Mars
• Jupiter
• Saturne
• Uranus (and not “ciel” in the video which only means sky)
• Neptune
• Pluton
Great video btw. Very educational 👏

I watch a lot of videos from a lot of people about this type of content and I gotta say that u r either on par or even better at some aspects! Really good video, I was especially surprised by you telling not only greek and roman (earth) and you included not only germanic but also slavic roots. Not sure if I ever seen so many included in one video.
I am really looking for more of your videos, keep up the good work mate ;) :)
Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it :)
The heliocentric model wasn't invented by Copernicus, Aristarchus of Alexandria not only knew the earth was a sphere but also calculated the perimeter!!! Copernicus only read the Greek books that were accessible to Catholics after the fall of Constantinople
Good series! The complexive explanation. The classic czech names are other: Mercury was named Dobropan ( goodness mister), Venus -Krasnopani (mistress of beauty); The Mars- was named: Smrtonos( bringing death), The Jupiter : Kralomoc( King od power), the Saturn: Hladolet ( giving a cold summer), the uranus- Nebestanka ( blue godess); the Neptune: Vodopan ( the King od water).
"BUNA ZIUA" = good day(good afternoon) - good light, good god, ZIUA=ZEU= Zeus ...
Ziua comes from lat. Dies and zeu comes from lat. Deus. What are you talking about?

The god Ouranos was called Uranus in Latin. William Herschell wanted to name the planet "Georgium Sidus", "George's Star", after King George III of Great Britain. Of course, other countries disagreed, so after some debates, scientists settled for Uranus. There was some elegance to it, since Uranus was Saturn's father, who was in turn Jupiter's father. To mark the origin of its discoverer, Uranus' satellites were given Shakespearean names instead (mainly from "A Midsummer's Night Dream" and "The Tempest" : Titania, Oberon, Puck, Miranda, Ariel, etc.).
Neptune was not named after its colour. No one knew what colour was Neptune before the probe Voyager 2 went there in 1989. It's discoverer, Urbain Le Verrier, proposed Neptune himself (Neptune had also been proposed for Uranus). Neptune was one of the three brothers born of Saturn, so it was a logical choice.
As for Pluto, the name was simply to complete the Olympian trio : Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto. However, it was also to honor the memory of the astronomer who first theorized its existence, Percival Lowell, his initials being the first two letters of PLuto. The planet was discovered after his death and following his calculations by Clyde Tombaugh.
In ancient world there were only 7 known heavenly bodies: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Uranus was found much later in 1781. That's why number 7 became such a sacred number especially in astrology.
In Finnish those 7 heavenly bodies are Aurinko (Sun), Kuu (Moon), Merkurius, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturnus. The Earth in Finnish is Maa, or maapallo (the globe).
I like how all latin gods/planets are copies of earlier Greek ones, except for the recent discoveries of neptune, pluto

Nice video!
And your pronunciation was not thy far of how we are pronouncing these words!!!👏🏻
Way better than the hideous Erasmian pronunciation that all Europeans have in their minds for our language🇬🇷
Some friendly corrections:
Romans adopted the religion of ancient Hellas!
Etruscans (the ancestors of Italians) had a different religion before the met with Hellenes!
The romans adopted almost everything from Hellas!
Gods, architecture, literature, philosophy, historiography, poetry… everything.
So, technically every planet has the name of a Hellene God even though everyone know them with their Latin translations!
Romans/Etruscans had different Gods before they met us.
Ancient Hellenes had seen and named these planet king before Romans and they gave to them the names you told us in the video.
Without the telescopes that we have today they had seen those planets and they gave them the names of our Gods.
Later, when we saw through telescopes Poseidon and Pluton, the astronomers kept the lineage of the Gods and gave them names according to Hellenic mythology but with their Latin equivalent!
Also, Hades was NEVER hated in ancient Hellas!!! This is a big lie from Hollywood.
In every film we see Hades as the bad guy…
1000% wrong!
Hades was a very kind God and Hellenes respected him a lot! They didn’t feared him!
As you said, Pluto also derives from the Hellenic word πλούτος/plùtos which means riches and wealth.
Hellenes knew that you can find precious metals in the ground.
The first goldsmiths in the world were the Thracians🇬🇷 which they created incredible gold artefacts!
Hades palace in the underworld was described decorated with millions of precious stones!
Τι πίπες λες, ρε κατακαημένε;
Bro, stop spreading greek nationalist propaganda and get a culture on Roman cvilization

Δίας was the other name of Zeus since the antiquity.... please correct this error.
Δίας as a nominative is a modern/medieval Greek construct. Which developed from the accusative τὸν Δία (genitive: τοῦ Διός).
Great video, but was shocked to see you used the flag of the USA to represent the English language. The name of the language is English so you should use the British flag to represent it.

There was no /f/ sound in Ancient Greek.
There were p, b, ph.
Ph is retained in Cypriot Greek!
Actually, eosforos in modern Greek can also mean "devil".
Totally not first.
Watch out for your errors. Jupiter has never been pronounced in English the way you say it: the letter "j" is not palatalised in English as it is in many European languages. It is always a sound you don't have in Spanish or French but similar to the Italian gi - as in Giuseppe or Giovanni. Also it is not correct to say that Uranus is not visible: in a dark sky one can get a glimpse of it but it is so dim that it looks like any faint star so was only discovered the 18th century by Herschel, (William, not Friedrich). Although he was born in Hannover, he moved to Britain permanently as a teenager and he always considered himself British, not German.
Uranus can be seen during a lunar eclipse if it's in the right position, I saw it during the October 2014 eclipse.
Should've included other dwarf planets with classical names: Ceres, Vesta, & Eris. Those are their Latin names. What would they be called in classical Greek? Also Sun/Sol and Moon/Luna should've been included.
Ceres : Demetra
Vesta: Hestia
Eris : Eris
Sol: Helios
Luna: Selene
4:16 the R in Portuguese is not vibrant as in Spanish, it would be more like an H in english, japanese....
You lost it completely with Pluto. Πλούτων and Άδης are different entities. Πλούτων exists as a God and there are ancient hymns were is referred to as Πλούτων.
"Κρόνος" στην ελληνική μυθολογία είναι ο πατέρας του Δία και μερικών άλλων θεών του Δωδεκάθεου. "Χρόνος" είναι μια αρχέγονη ασώματη θεότητα που προσωποποιούσε την έννοια του χρόνου και είναι λάθος να ταυτίζονται.
