Growing the Next World Record Bluegill!

- In this video, I get a new bluegill for my aquarium that I am going to try to grow to world record size. I will end up transferring him to the pond when he gets big enough. Afterwards, I feed the fish in the backyard pond.

As someone who's been keeping fish for about 14 years now, I might have some tips for you. High protein diet is a good starting place. But also make sure the tank is LARGE. The larger the tank, the faster the growth rate. Growing out a bluegill in a 75 gallon vs a 36 gallon will yield very different fish. Also, make sure the water quality stays top tier. Protein rich foods often soil water really quick so, probably worth keeping water changes a bit more than regular, and overrating your filter system. Safety is also obviously the biggest concern in the pond, but if you notice the growth rate start to slow before that size mark it would probably be worth breaking out the old gar tubs.
I know you probably know most if not all of this and probably just didn't talk about it, and I know you've been fishing and doing all of this probably much longer than I have, but on the off-chance there was something I knew that could help you that you didn't already know, I just wanted to make sure you got to see it.
Thanks for the tips! I appreciate it. Right now the bluegill is in a 60 gallon tank with a fluval fx6. It should be good in there for at least a few months.
Sounds like a great start to me! And you're not doing a community tank like most of the people in my circle do, so filtration probably won't be AS much of an issue? Especially right now when they're just a fingerling. I have a feeling it'll be more important soon enough though, so sounds awesome.
As a way to ensure your blue gill grows up to be the largest possible, you should name it Gillgamesh.

Neat....gotta name him Garfield 😁 My brother and I caught Bluegills that was over 4 pounds from my Grandmother's private pond. She fed them table scraps nearly every day . The back porch was over the edge of pond which had a double sink with spigots from which she washed the dishes after scaping them. .

Some homemade fish food I used to supplement a couple times a week that put some serious size on my fish:
Cow heart, cleaned and trimmed (cut the pericardium off and cut it into quarters and cut out all the valves)
mussels,
shrimp,
white fish,
about a tablespoon of chlorella powder and a tablespoon of spirulina powder
Blend it all together (use raw, nothing pre-cooked) until it's a paste and stir after the fact to make it an even distribution and then flatten into small patties in sandwich bags and freeze. Fill the bags corner to corner to cut down on freezerburn.
Chop it into little bite sized chunks and feed what he'll eat. It'll last a long, long time.
Blend a little at a time or you will burn out the motor on your blender.
