Thank you for sharing this. This is an environmental issue. We are throwing perfectly working devices into the landfill when they simply could be used again if we just replace the battery.
I don't have all this equipment and expertise. I don't intend to do it myself. But if the battery in my headphones is not working as expected anymore, then I know that this is an option now. I'll just go to my local repair technician and ask them if they can do something like this.

Cheap soldering irons can be picked up for peanuts these days, and basic soldering isn't really a very hard skill to learn. I'd recommend anyone who's even the remotest bit interested in trying to fix their own electronics to just pick one up (and a small roll of lead based flux core solder*) and giving it a go. The first time you use it to reconnect or replace a broken wire rather than taking a device to a repair centre, the iron and solder will have paid for itself. It's just one more simple to learn skill that will save you money, AND give you a real world sense of achievement (Something sadly lacking in many peoples modern way of life).
You'd be amazed at how many quite expensive pieces of electronic equipment have soldered in batteries these days (Most laptops now haven't even got "User replaceable" battery packs), so being able to assemble and replace custom battery packs is going to become a more and more usefull skill to have.
(* A law was passed in several counties a while ago outlawing the use of lead based solder in manufacturing or commercial repairs. Because of this, lead free solder was developed, but it's horrible to use and isn't particularly beginner friendly. Lead based is the only way to go for a learner)

@@Reman1975Was that ROHS? In 2006-07, I worked in a factory that made printed circuit boards, but on the office end of things. My brothers worked in printing and in plating. I remember everyone who worked the HASL machine and the people who soldered components *despised* the lead-free product, and there were quite a few months of figuring out how to make boards come out decently with it.

    • @Reman1975

@@tropezando I've tried several different brands of lead free solder, and I've yet to find one that isn't truly awful stuff to use. Regardless of what additional fluxes I've tried, the stuff doesn't want to flow into joints like leaded stuff does. With practice you can get functional solder joints with lead free stuff, but it's significantly harder to get a professional looking result using it. I find myself lingering on every solder joint as I try to get it to "look right", but eventually the only criteria is "Is it holding the component securely? Is it conducting electric? Then it's soldered well enough !".
If you're doing soldering work commercially, then UK law says you need to be using lead free solder, but for repairing/modifying/building your own stuff it's still perfectly legal to use leaded. It's easier to learn, and you can do the joints quicker with better results, so for hobby use, it's leaded every time for me now.

This video is brilliant. Straight to the point and clear.
it gave me hope to fix the headphones I use for work. I opened the case to check the voltage on the battery and noticed this yellowish gum, it actually looks like dried glue, right where the battery was soldered to the PCB.
I did some research and concluded it's not GS or RTV silicone adhesive because it's definitely yellow and slightly translucent, instead of white and opaque.
What do you think it is, and how would you recommend trying to remove it without damaging the board?

    • @ElectronicsComputers

If you can't use one big battery, you can connect two batteries in parallel. In that case, the voltage will remain the same, but the capacity will double. It won't affect your headphones in any way except that the charging time will double, but at the same time, the working time will also increase.

I‘m looking to replace my battery in my Master&Dynamic Mw65 headphones, but I‘m not sure what a right replacement battery would be. On the battery it says 720mAh and „+4.2V“ which I‘m assuming is the charging voltage?
Usually these batteries all should be 3.7V, right?
The dimensions of the battery are 37mm x 32mm x 8mm. Additionally the battery has three cables attached to the mainboard, but most replacement batteries only have two cables (positive and negative) so I‘m not sure if these would fit..

Fully charged Li-ion battery reaches 4.2volts so ether 3.7V or 4.2 volts on the battery means exactly the same. If your battery has 3 wires then you need to find the same one. That third wire it a temperature sensor. Can your headphones fit 40mm X 30 mm X 8mm?

After opening them up as you describe at :41, the rest was easy. The old battery was "puffy," so it was definitely dead. I'm not comfortable soldering on the circuit board, so I just cut and stripped the wires to solder them to the new battery wires. A little electrical tape, and tucked it all in. Back in service!

Hi, great post. And I did the same thing on my SONY DR BT-50 earphone just recently. However, I am not quite sure on the part about voltage charger not concerned with mAh of the battery chosen for replacement.
If mAh is irrelevant and only the nominal 3.7-V charging input matters (including its size, of course), then I was wasting my time seeking high and low for the replacement the same as the original one. Any clarifications are greatly appreciated. BTW, the my chosen replacement with the same mAh as the original SONY one ain't cheap.... 😫

All headphones during charging usually draw 500mA to 1 amp so even if you connect 2A charger it's not gonna speed up the process. If you install a higher capacity battery it will charge longer and vice versa. That's all the difference here.
