I would think these fellows would be less successful than older ichthyosaurs (more hydrodynamic) and contemporary plesiosaurs (long necked, seemingly better able to surprise prey), but they apparently did quite well with that oversized head full of thick, sharp teeth. Thanks for showing it to us!
They were very successful predators at the time but you are correct that as a species group they didn't have the longevity of some of the other marine reptiles!
Just so everybody knows a long time ago when this skull was being put in the museum they actually put clay around it to make it larger than it actually is because back then everybody wanted the biggest playa sore so it's actually really not that big and it's a fake.
Very interesting! Amazing work Steve.
The hugest one I've seen!!
Great video!!! Love hearing what Steve had to say about this beautiful skull!
Thank you, we are very grateful Dorset museum accommodated us and allowed us to make this video!
Excellent. And a great story.
It's an incredible specimen! and Steve's stories are always so interesting, we are just grateful we have the opportunity to tell them!
I am so glad those things are extinct! Cracking job on the restoration and prep, you have to love a good jig saw puzzle
They would be truly terrifying wouldn't they!
Id want to catch one lol. 2 ton test braided line ;)
I hope you have a boat to match!@@mattmorrison9379

@@TheEtchesCollection but didn't pliosaurs as a whole die out after their primary forage base (the more hydrodynamic Ichthyosaurs) went extinct?
👍🏻
