I love this place. Soo many memories. I will continue to come here as long as I am able.

I remember clambering over the spoil heap of a building site near where I lived as a eight year old (sixty-odd years ago, so no H&S) to find dozens and dozens of Gryphaea and taking them to school the next day to hand out the Devil's toenails to the other kids. 10 years later, on a geology field, trip trying to extract an intact Palovia rotunda from the cliffs at Chapman's, which invariably ended in heartbreak. And now my kids have started referring to me as ''the fossil'' which I don't mind, as I've always though of fossils as something special.

I first visited this stretch of coast when I was 17 during an 'A' level geology field trip some 50 years ago and have been back countless times over the years. The feeling of wonderment at finding ancient sea creatures in the rocks has never faded and I doubt it ever will.

Our average life expectancy is infinitesimal when compared to the age of the Jurassic fossil record. I imagine discovering and curating the collection puts an even greater emphasis on how brief our time on earth is .

Abcess? That's the maxillary depression, present in most goniopholidids and thought to house a gland of some kind (probably for excreting excess salt). Lovely specimen.

I used to go rock climbing on the Swanage cliffs in the eighties and often saw ammonites, some of them quite big. I remember seeing the best one on a climb named Gymcrack, it was about one metre diameter. Never saw a croc though...
