My dog escaped toward big traffic street. Me running in opposite direction and making funny noises wouldn't work. I run after him ,got between the cars marking signs to drivers to stop. Crossed the street and managed to catch him, but a nice lady with a car stopped to help me take him home. I didn't have his leash. It was a scary experience. Since I taught him the word STOP, and he is slowing down to full stop. We adopted him last year. He was a street dog, and very much street smart!💖🐾

Same thing just happened to me. I tried running in the other direction, but he just kept going up towards the road. He got there before me and I was sure he'd get killed. Luckily, the traffic stopped on both sides, and some kind people got out and helped me. I almost had heart failure, but my pup just didn't have a clue what all the fuss was about! Time for training 😮

Thanks for this! I wish I saw this a 1/2 hour ago 😢. We live in a couple acres and he was snoozing in the sun 10 feet from me! Two little dogs came in my yard and Max bolted after them! My street is quiet but a main road crosses it. I jumped in the car after doing all the wrong things and took off. THANK GOD he randomly stopped at the stop sign and turned around and ran towards me when he heard my car coming. I lost it and yelled at him and put him time out in my house. I’m trying to calm down because that scared the shite out of me!

Super tip Susan! I wish I had remember the “pop” part when I lost my puppy for more than 40 minutes Monday! It was a huge fenced area 250 acres so I did panic but I called him multiple time, I could not see him as the area is full of gullies, streams and hills that I went up and down for the time he was gone and had no idea where to go and look! Then he reappeared I pet him ( no word) but his leash back on and we resumed our walk! Phew! That is not an experience I want to repeat! Now I just need to rehearse the dolphin squeal :)

I'll keep this one in mind! Our go-to right now is to make a sound and then sit like we've been hurt. (Imagine the sound you'd make if you twisted your ankle, then how you'd sit and hold it.) Dog comes back to check on us, mission accomplished. It has worked on several dogs (ours and not ours) so far, but it's always good to have more options!

My cavoodle is a runner. I've just started letting him off leash (after plenty of enclosed dog park practice runs first) at a semi enclose oval. When its time to leave and recall fails, I've started walking away from him. He's an explorer but also very attached, so he catches up pretty quick to put the lead back on.
I didn't think to do this until recently because instinct is to 'save' your dog, but they just think it's a game.
I'm glad I found this vid to affirm I'm not a bad pet owner!

This is such timely information. My Maisie is getting more clever at finding holes in my perimeter. So far I have been able to catch her or stop her before she got out, but I will try Sop, Pop and Roll next time. This is sadly too late for my first dog, Snoop, who bolted from the car and into traffic.

My cavalier recently dashed out the gate as soon as a guest opened it. I had to run after him like a headless chicken bc he just sprinted off down the road- had I not chased him I wouldn’t have been able to know which way he would go. He chases cars and cats 😭 so even if a nuclear bomb went off he wouldn’t flinch in that situation! Luckily he ran into someone’s garden and I got him back. This would work if you are in a big, green field and with some dogs only. I am in a sad place. I adopted a Chihuahua-Terrier mix and he was probably in a hoarding situation and left to his own devices, never inside a home. He is street smart but has a need to break out of the house and take off. He ran 1 mile in 30 mins and some people found him and brought him back. Since then, he has escaped numerous times and taken off down the pavement, crossing a major street (again) and eluding capture.
Yes he has high exercise needs. I walk him 2 miles daily and take him to a park to run free and sniff wild things like terriers want to do. He still runs off. An open window, a crack in the fence, pushing screen doors open, etc. He also is a very picky eater even with roast pork, hamburgers, roast chicken, fresh Greek yoghurt, fish, salmon, veggies, scrambled eggs...! No junk food. He sleeps in a luxurious bed on my bed, eats like an emperor, walkies daily, professional grooming that I do. He has come a long way with being nice to other dogs, and not leaving the park anymore. But... your technique would not work on him. He goes off on his own, sniffing wild trails and could not care less what happens to me. If I shriek, he won't even hear it. This dog is closed off to bonding. I cannot get close to him, always fearful, always suspicious, always wanting to run away despite the best home he could have. He is going to be rehomed. I have had enough of this ungrateful dog. No more mutts. I will wait to rescue a pedigreed dog - mini poodle, my favorite. They are loyal and loving. This dog is disloyal and has no affection for me.

So I have a Beagle, so you know right away I have a breed that is going to follow her nose. I’ve had quite a few beagles, but this is the first time in years that I’ve had a young one. I got her at around 3 months, and now she’s roughly 1.5 years old. I’m completely paranoid about her getting off leash. It happened last week in the pouring rain as I was about to leave for a work trip. It took about 45 mins, and a missed flight, to get her back. And she didn’t come back until I did what I should have done to begin with, go home myself. I tried going after her and talking sweet to her, but of course, none of it worked. Now I’m completely paranoid about her getting away, especially if I have to leave her with someone. That’s why I’m here, I’m searching for answers.

I naturally did similar. You have to simply be smarter than the dog. Try and read their chemistry. If you jump, run, or lunge at them, they’re obviously going to run. So like this woman is saying, try to entice them instead. I literally just got back from catching my runaway pup because my genius of a step dad let him loose at 6 months old…

Running in opposite direction doesn't work. Dog took off at a gallop today, crossed busy highway. Complete chaos. Might have to re-home her. Was out in freezy cold windy downpour 1-1/2 hours trying to get her back home. A neighbor brought her here in their car. More havoc-- dog loves to go bye-bye & now has a huge chaos-generating incentive to run off again. To get to ride in a stranger's SUV. She's purebred Lab. At my wit's end.

Hello! I got some story too like that. We adopted a dog with a very sad and bad past. She doing well. Im very thankful for that tipp. We also train her with a very long leash and keep her rewarding everytime she comes back. One time she run away because the lease fall out of hand and we panict and keep on running after her. A old man with a dog far before us of the route hears me saying please catch the leash, he catches it. That happend like a week after we adopted her the first time. That old man with his dog was our hero, after him nobody was out there like a western town. Next time i will try your tipp. The panic growls just deep, every one must be strong, it costs a lot strength to do that what you told in that video. In our scenario our dog doesnt know us for long time, i wonder, if that could have work out too. Im just happy, nothing happend to her back that day. Thank you for sharing your Videos.

She will not come back when searching for food no matter what I do. Also, she is ravenous and finds the smallest morcal of food on the ground and I fear she will eat something that is harmful. I don't know what to do. I feel guilty if she does not run a few times a day. I made the mistake of yelling at her when she finally came today, because this time she went out of site in the park...I've obviously screwed up my dog by yelling at her when she came back this time but now that spring is here, she is out of control for some reason. My husband puts her to bed in his room...doors are open if she wants to get down. But she waits on him every time. I was not going to get another dog. I felt like my days of being able to take care or live long enough to keep one were over. His arms and heart were yearning to be filled, so that is what we did. He takes very good care of her and she is so attached to him. She loves me too, but her daddy is the love of her life. We tried for months to find a small older dog to adopt from the shelters in the area...all I've ever had were rescues. But none were to be found but one that I fell instantly in love with, then was told when we went to check out that he was already spoken for. I don't care for your attitude, but you don't know us. So I forgive you.
