- This is my very first video with my voice on how to do something.
For all those with face color problems in Skyrim, I hope my video helps you get a start of where to look for your trouble shooting and hopefully, resolve your problem.
I'm sorry for the my stuttering and hesitations in the video, I did not learn a text by heart and just chose to capture this on spot and upload this for anyone needing assistance on how to search for a problematic mod and resolve an annoying issue.
Holy cow this info got me on the way to get things figured out. I was having a NIGHTMARE of a time. I was just gonna accept that some of these NPC's were gonna be black faced. Wish you had a donate button because I woulda never figured it out on my own.
I do have a donate button through PayPal. I do not post my donation link directly here on UA-cam but if you really want to donate you can get my PayPal donation link on my CBM Guide from Nexus Mods here: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/37298
I'm very pleased that you appreciated my video even if I stutter but all I want is for people to stop struggling when things seem impossible to achieve. So I'm glad this helped you and your comment is still very appreciated. I do not shop for donations but I do provide the link for those wanting it but m first intention is to help people and if you say this helped, I'm very happy.
After a little tinkering, I had just ONE black face I couldn't solve. I tried all sorts!! Your video was so helpful. Now I have no black faces!!! Thank you so much. You're still helping players in 2024!!
I'm happy to see that this still helps. Thanks a whole lot for taking the time to comment. It's very appreciated and I'm always happy to read your comments! Enjoy your time playing :)
My biggest recommendation is if you are facing this issue, Uninstall "All" Mods that might be conflicted and "ReInstall" them. You will face much less priority problems and having to avoid going to use SSEedit.
- Although this video does help identifying it manually. - I've learned that you *MUST* read the description of what mods are compatable and if they say they do and have an issue, It could be that your skyrim does not support that mod correctly, So you'll have to use a different Skin mod that is compatible. or least, Reliable.
After years of modding, I can tell you that for a small list of more-or-less 100 mods, the re-installation of problematic mods could be a good solution since I did this in the past. BUT, after more than 400 mods installed and others over 1000, this is NOT an acceptable solution. Tracking down all mods that can be related to the problematic face issue is not an easy task. It's easier to find 1 mod and change it's load order than re-installing. Re-installing COULD interfere with other mods which may come in conflict with a wrong load order and now a mod problem may become much bigger. Thanks for your suggestion though and others may relate to your comment.
@@avidichard Agreed. I am running a modlist from Wabbajack that has over 1200 active mods, with 253 plugins. Uninstalling/reinstalling numerous mods would be a nightmare. I also use MO2 instead of Vortex, because it lets me more precisely correct the load order (among other things). Regardless of the toolset though, your method of spotting exactly which mod is causing the problem is perfect. Thanks!
Very thanks for the help David, this helped me solve the black face issue I was having, the discoloration mod wasn't able to fix this issue so thanks again man, liked and subscribed
I'm very happy it helped you. Thanks for taking time to comment and for subscribing. Please DO have a good time playing :)
So while your xedit process is correct, the real problem wasn't the records for the weapons or keys. The real problem is the records for the facegen, also in that npc. Pandorable changes the facegen records and then also supplies facetints and other face and hair assets. The cutting room floor patch changes those records back to vanilla values and no longer matches the assets. That is why that character gets a black face. Esp load order is important, but so is the load order of the assets. For NPCs, those orders need to match. Now in your case, you needed a patch to forward the CRF and AI Overhaul and Pandorable's NPC data so all three could be used in game. Placing NPC mods at the end of your load order is good, but they need to be patched appropriately too. The face and hair records are further down the list and would also have been red.
I recorded the video AFTER I had corrected the issue which is why the video does not show that exactly properly. This is why I mention in the video at 4:35 that the item may not be the issue. But that's kind of you to mention it in a comment. Thanks for taking time to point that out if ever someone missed it or misunderstood my instructions.
Thank you very much. I saw comments for the load order thing but I didn't now how to put mods all the way back(only put them after x mod(s) in loot), slamming the bijin mods all the way back fixed the black face issue.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, i was using high poly and jampions, and all i had to do was load jampions before high poly and FIXED, now I can run both and everything works!
you are an absolute legend David RIchard
I cant believe I didn't think of installing a mod to fix a mod lmao watches first five seconds of vid problem instantly solved
Thank you so much. I forgot about how to do this. I've also got bright purple table.
I'm using the console info mod that shows which mod everything is from when you point at it.
Thanks again
bruh your video helped me understand so fucking much thank you! i cannot express how thankful i am
Just your comment is good for me. I appreciate people commenting their experience. I have Donation link on my mods pages on NexuMods but I consider comments as good as money donations. Not everyone comments and it feels good to know that our videos have been usefull so THANK YOU very much for your comment and I am super happy that it helped you out!!!
I don't usually comment on videos but I have to say it, thanks! Your video solved the problem.
Well, thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to post a comment. Money helps lots of people but positive feedbacks are as good, they don't pay bills but they sure do make you feel good and make one persone feel that their work is appreciated so I am very happy that you left a feedback and that my video helped you!!!
Everything in this guide is great. except for using the groups to set the load order. If you use Tools like Loot that flag will be ignored. Its better to set rules to make sure mod x loads after y.
True! In loot the load order precision is much more precise. Loot is actually present in Vortex which is why I showed how to do it in Vortex because some people might think it's too complicated to properly edit the order in Loot. I could have mentionned that people should not use loot when using the methode I show in my video. But good point. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
@David Richard you don't set the rules in loot. You can set "load after" rules in vortex itself.
OMG IT WORKED! Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you very much kind sir!
Well, you're very welcome kind person! Glad it helped and thanks for taking time to comment!!! :)
2:55 What if I don't know which mod is causing problems?
The black face bug is a pain in the ass when you start using lots of mods. I've got some of my children with black faces but I have lots of children overhaul mods and other mods which add/change kids too so trying to figure it out is going to be a pain in the ass.
You have saved my life
My OWN face turned Black, How do I solve it? Ps4
Im so confused because it says USSEP is causing the blackface. Its one of the earliest loaders. And for some it says Update.esm is causing it.
thanks man helped me with RS Children
You're very welcomed! Thanks for taking time to drop a comment! :)
Gosh, such a useful video! Thank you!
Thanks for dropping a comment! I appreciate the feedback. I'm glad this was usefull for you :) !
What if a npc mod doesn't have esp? It only has mesh and texture files.
Well, I guess you will go the hard way the same way I did before doing this video. Disable all mods that change NPCs that touch the specific infected NPC then install them one by one after running the game everytime you install 1 mod until you find out which mod causes the Black face issue. If there's no ESP, I would not know exactly how to go about it. My guess is to at least go my way, how I show it and if there's no success, I can't really think of another way unfortunately. You may try the black face solver mods like the one I suggest in the video which could patch your problem if you do not want to go over your entire mod list and run the game every time you enable 1 mod.
Muchas gracias !
Gracias a Google Translate ya que no hablo español! ¡De nada! ¡Gracias por tomarse el tiempo para publicar un comentario! ¡¡¡Disfruta tu juego!!! (hopefully Google translated this properly) Thanks for Google Translate! You are very welcome! Thanks for taking time to post a comment! Please enjoy your game!!! :)
Welp you did it! Thank you. Has gifted one like.
You're welcome, thanks for taking the time to comment :)
I was wondering would this fix if I drag the missing to match the other
Big ty
You're welcome!
Great video, but I have a question, what do I do if I don't know what mod is causing problems, is there a way I can find out?
If you cannot see any problematic mods in SSEEdit, then it must be a corrupted facegen file. Sometimes, you won't imagine what types of mods can actually make edits in these files for nothing or SSE will simply generate the facegen file for you and it will cause the black face issue. Best way to go about it is to uninstall your character mods, then deploy your mods. After that, re-install those mods. Most big multiple character mods or single charcter makeover mod, they provide facegen files so re-installing JUST these mods may resolve the issue when you cannot find out what causes the black face issue. If ever these do not work, there's always the mod Face DIscoloration Fix I present in the video that can help.
If those do not help, then you will have to do what I did. First, Google the facegen file for the character that has the dark face problem, then, once you know, in your mod manager, get a hold of one of the mods changing that character and manage the conflicts of that mod and see which mods change that file. If there is none, then you need to do the last boring step, uninstall all mods changing that character or making a change to that facegen file and in the end, DELETE that facegen file. Run your game and make sure that the uninstalled mods do not ctd your game. If it does not and your character is not black faced anymore, then you're in luck, all you have to do is re-install your mods. If there's still a black face issue, then there's another mod you forgot to uninstall and if it CTD's then there's another mod depending on your uninstalled mods or you deleted files you should not have.
I happened to have done the latter which is what brought me into creating my CBM Guide on NexusMods so I know exactly what to do if my game crashes and I need to re-install everything from scratch, it hurts, it's boring, but listing all your mods in a note pad or word document makes things a lot less harsh when big problems like this happen. I happen to learn through that hard process to watch properly which mods depend on which and install my mods in an order that permits me to control things mid-modding and not scrapping my game everytime I mod and knowing which mods change what. That's pretty much all the advice I can say. I hope this helps you. Happy New Year!!! :)
@@avidichard thanks very much, happy new year.
COULD HAVE ADDED THE LINKS AS WELL
Pandorable npc cutting room floor patch! lol
I having blackface with pan follower pack 1 and this video sadly couldn't help me at all. Xedit was like nah you dont have any issues with your followers gtfo
Have you tried the mod Face Discoloration Fix: ua-cam.com/video/PL0VPNoGpGc/v-deo.html
I can't seem to figure out what's happening with my black faces. I made a custom mod to turn Pelagius wing into a player home. I added 2 NPCs so far. Both have black faces. I'm using Eye's Of Beauty and KS Hairdos loaded into CK with my mod as the active file. At first, my mod loaded way at the top of the load order, and I thought maybe that was the problem, but no matter how I load it, it's the same result. If I type setNPCweight 50 into the console, the black face disappears, but it also reverts to vanilla hairdos.
I rebuilt facegen data with Ctrl F4. Saved the mod, deployed through Vortex.
In SSEdit, nothing has a color scheme. It's all white. Error checking reports this:

Sorry for the late response, I would first use NifScope and open up your character's facegen file situated under this path in your Data folder: meshes\actors\character\facegendata\facegeom\YourESP_FileName.esp. Open up your character's facegen NIF file and check the texture path and be sure that the files exist. That would be my first step. You'll also immediately see in NifScope if something went wrong. Also, you'd maybe want to try out the Face Discoloration Fix mod here and see if it resolves your issue: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/42441
@@avidichard Thank you, I took the easy way out. The mod fixed it!
What is S S E edit? Where do I find that. Some folders are named differently for me
SSE Edit is here: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/164
i appreciate the help :)
THANK YOU!!!
Got a video for console?
Unfortunately, No, I only play the PC version. Only way I could direct you is by installing each mod, one by one and run the game after the installation of each individual mod until you find out that the NPC has a black face. A good way to install mods is by group, so all NPC changing mods should be installed as a batch or a group. Install your engine and game bug correction mods mods such as USSEP and so on, your nature mods, personal character mods such as CBBE, UNP or other body changing mods. Then, once all of these work well, you install one by one your NPC changing mods. This way, you do not need to uninstall all your mods to start over, you just need to remove the NPC mods. I don't know on Console how the management is done but best it to create yourself a written list, Word document, website or written notepad of the order you installed your mods. That's why I have my CBM Guide on Nexus, it's my goto notes on my mod installation to prevent these hard to find and annoying issues.
I'm sorry I cannot supply more help but I do not play on console. I hope you find your solutions!!! :)
You are GOD!
I sure wish I could be at moments. I'd have some money to buy a car which I just lost. But, I'm just a simple human that loves to help others in simple ways Thanks for taking time to comment. I appreciate it :)
Hi,
Thanks for the attempt but I think you miss some very critical points and your advices can cause more harm than good
1 - The item of the Cutting Room patch is not related at all with your dark face issue, the other properties, which you don't show, that are lower in the record, are the reasons why you get a darkface
2 - Using LOOT is generally a bad idea on big modlists
3 - You don't explain how to patch the record properly. What if you want the NPC to have the item in its inventory, because it's part of a quest or something... boom quest broken
4 - It explains one case of dark face and solve it with a method which can cause more issues at the end than the dark face... what if you want the ESP to load after but your nif and dds files are overwritten, what if the RACE records are overwritten by another mod and the Tint Layers template overwritten as well
Solving dark faces is a complicated matter
This video will give a better overview of the mechanics behind the scene ua-cam.com/video/VHX3EyuVdQk/v-deo.html but will not solve all your issues either, and is specific to building a LOTD list
In the case of my mod list displayed in the video, I showed the video AFTER correcting my dark face issue so it is not meant to display MY actual problem but just suggest people to use the tools to find out which mods overwrite other mods and which ones may interfere. I get your point but the video is not meant to say that this mod caused an issue. But It's good to have other possible solutions and videos so thanks for taking time to comment and bring up another video which may help someone else!
Any help for console ?
Your question would need more precision. What do you mean by help for console? I understand you mean doing something in Console mode but I can't really see how you can find mod overrides during gameplay and change the load order in console mode while running the game. Could you be a bit more specific please?
@@avidichard they mean ps or Xbox. There's nothing for us seems like and I use no mods on Npc changes at all
the mod already worked so it was usefull
