Naked Bible Podcast 249 - Did Israelites View Their Judges as Gods?

  • The word elohim frequently speaks of a single deity, most notably the God of Israel, in the Hebrew Bible. Exceptions include Psalm 82:1, 6, where plural elohim refers to the members of God’s heavenly host (his council or assembly; cp. Psa 89:5-7). Dr. Heiser has devoted a great deal of attention to how such passages and such thinking should not be defined by modern readers as polytheism or henotheism. Though he has written extensively in published scholarly journals on the topic and in his best-selling book, The Unseen Realm, some opponents of the straightforward reading of Psalm 82 and other passages insist that the elohim of that psalm are people-specifically, Israelite judges. This episode of the podcast examines the proof-texts of such an idea and shows their deficiencies.
    Material in this episode is drawn from Dr. Heiser’s article, “Should אלהים (ʾelōhîm) with Plural Predication be Translated “Gods”? BT Vol. 61, No. 3: 123-136. This article is not accessible online, but can be accessed only via a theological or university library or by subscribing to Dr. Heiser’s newsletter. Papers read at conferences and other articles that address divine plurality in Psalm 82 and elsewhere are freely available at Dr. Heiser’s divine council website.
    For how this episode and its content relates to Jesus’ use of Psalm 82:6 in John 10:34, see Episode 109: John 10: Gods or Men?

    There are many human beings on earth each with different attributes, we all share some attributes but only one human being has your particular set of attributes. There are many spirit beings but only one of them is God. I can't understand why that's so hard to understand.

      Yep, it's actually ridiculous. If we could just get over our English word "god" and realize it's simply the HEAVENLY HOST. It's almost like these people have never heard of that concept before. Even when you show them Job about the Sons of God/Morning Stars singing for joy, nope.... doesn't register. There's only God, angels, Satan, and demons. It's very small minded and stubborn.

    I will have to agree with Mike. I grew up in Indonesia, and considering the Hindus and the Buddhists worship "gods", I am very familiar with the concept of small "g" gods.

    Some judges of today think they are like God. I went before a judge for a non-criminal manner and was treated rather harshly by the judge for no reason. Having power makes them think they are above normal people.

      Same story here. I filed a small claims case against a shipping store and was treated like garbage during the case by the judge. Not just me but the other party as well.

      The court is a satanic system. Baal or moloch runs that show. Admitted guilt is the same as repenting to god.

      For what non-criminal matter did one find one's self before a judge resulting in such harsh treatment?

      51:51 I would add... that IF you "judge", then you have 'judged' yourself; and yourself is the ONLY one you should 'judge'. When LORD GOD gave us His 'spirit', we got ALL of them (see Isaiah 45:7) and He judges in the 'midst of 'them', thus... your 'kingdom' is within you. And each of us has the potential to be a 'great nation'. Welcome to accountability. 😎

    Can you please address how Mormonisim does or doesn't fit in to the biblical world view. They teach that we were the sons of God premortally. I really would appreciate it! Thank you!

    • @Bob_Squared23
      @Bob_Squared23 3 роки тому +3

      I'm not sure if he has covered this before or not, but I don't think Mormonism doesn't confirm to a biblical worldview. My reasoning for this is because Scripture doesn't describes us as existing as children of God before our first birth. Rather it teaches we become children of God after our second birth. We become children of God via adoption.

    This is a very important issue. Many groups deny the eternal deity of Christ. The question is could anyone other than, the Son, God incarnate accomplish the Atonement? Would a mere proxy (created being) serve? I want to have a Biblically robust treatment of this. We know Jesus Christ accomplished the Atonement, but why is it compelling that only eternal deity incarnate is sufficient for this task? I am challenged by Sacred name members, Jehovah Witnesses, and Mormons. Robust and Biblical please!
