I've been a metal head for most of my life, and in recent years I've found a lot more joy in stuff like this, but I've realized one thing... there is only one Jerry Garcia. In all genres I've scoured for something listenable, nobody has poured their soul into the strings like this guy did.
Cody Harder Jerry at his best was untouchable IMO. There are and have been many great guitarists, but Jerry’s playing when he was really on takes me places no other musician ever has.
When they were on, they were really on. I miss the type of songs they played. They were all about the wild west, women, gambling, conflict, etc. American as it gets.
Just thought a name needs mentioning, since he had so much to do with the stories and imagery you describe, and tapping into each of our subconsciousness to make those amazing connections deep within our core. And that would be Robert Hunter, the often overlooked but certainly not silent member of the band (RIP).
Greatful Dead found me in my worst chapter of my life. Got left by my girl recently who also is the mother of my kids. I was about to give up and leave this planet cuz i could not stand being away from my kids, then a friend put Ripple and Touch of grey on when we was taking a ride. Something happened right there, now im checking out everything and i feel different. I dont know why, but i feel a kind of comfort and hope. They might be the most important band to me and i have always been into music. Thanks i guess
jimmy johnson i get very nostalgic watching the old shows when I was touring with the Dead..and fortunate to tour them on their European tour. . Essen, Berlin, Frankfort, and Hamburg Germany. . . 3 shows in London and 2 in Paris
That Jerry Garcia.. He still Be Good playin' In Heaven. His Band The Grateful Living just added a new drummer. Some dude from down here, named Neil. "Since you poured the wine for me and tightend up my shoes, I hate to leave you sittin there composin lonesome blues...." somethin about that line gets me every time man. It just shows the compassion and love the Dead put into their music. By far one of my favorite Dead songs. I'm only 19 but I was raised right by my dad, too many kids now can't even begin to comprehend the genius behind Garcia and Hunter....
I just turned 20, so we’re probably the same age, I’m in the exact same boat as you! My dad raised me on classic rock, and it seems like no one else nowadays is able to understand this music anymore.
When the band and the listener become one with the universe and it feels like you're skipping long strides through an incredible landscape with an overpowering feeling of joy and happiness. You know it because it's pure Truth. That's why we are bonded as Deadheads. Through the band, we are one in those moments of clarity and truth.
Amen or I could say... Hell Yes!. It wont change what IS! The music takes us to us. Or what you said lol! Peace to those who, deserve it! What's hard is to carry on till day, and never skip a beat. IF the music was inspired by the spirit... Or whatever we "feel" from the music. When we hear it again... we project or mirror what inspired the song... If that makes any sense :-) Dawn is breaking everywhere... Brother can u curse the glare... ...the shoe is on the hand it fits. Enough said. you got me going. thanks for insight.
This was my 1st Grateful Dead concert. I had just turned 17. A few of my friends went with me on a whim. Best decision I have ever made musically speaking. Totally blew me away. I live about 2 hours from Rich Stadium and never missed another GD concert there after that. I've seen them many other places but IMHO nothing compared to seeing the Dead at Rich Stadium. Some great great memories there. Camping out behind the 7/11, my first "trip", great jams in the parking lots etc etc.
That entire summer Jerry was on fire! Seeing him move onstage like that was rare in the late 80's. Really going after it. I must have seen him a dozen times on the West coast that year. Great memories!
This was one of the best shows they ever did. That's why they released the whole thing through the record company. I was there, this was a whole lot of fun. Loved it. Longtime Deadhead, 37 years. Thanx for posting this.
I come back to this video now and then. This vid shows why the dead were the best at live performing. One great solo, then a solo from the outer cosmos that is stunning. They worked out of traditional song structures and broke it wide open with their breaks. Then WHAM at the end of the second solo, everybody was back together in one half beat and crunched the chords back into the lyrics and the formal song structure. Back when the dead were touring California in the very early sixties, every professional guitar player in Bakersfield, Nashville West back then, knew of Garcia and that he was killer. No one bends notes where he bends them, before or after his death.
i think 100 of the views are from me over the years!! it will never get old.. absolutely timeless! i got to see the real deal with jerry and my first dead concert was in my mothers womb, and i took my dad to see dead and company last year after my mother past, and its the happiest ive seen him since the accident with my mom happened. im convinced if they cant put a smile on ur face u have no soul:)
I was right in front of Jerry during this show, making a damn fool of myself most of the first set with stuff I won't write here. Last time he sings, "Watch each card you play..." you hear him sing, "Children PLEASE take it slow..." He was looking right at me. Love and miss you Jerry!
I've needed this for so long ..n had it on phone all along. Grateful Dead as wake up call. I don't have a negative thing to say on any song and video I hit except I wish my speaker's were louder
I'm with you on the speakers, honey!!!!!!!!!! Unfortuately, this is NOT my computer, so I really have no say in the matter!!!!!!!!! But I'm enjoying driving the spell check nutz!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DEAL in my opinion is a really underappreciated Dead song , seen lots of shows in the 80s and for me Deal still stands out as one of the best ever of the era, awesome version here for sure
Jerry's tone in this is otherworldly, literally the definition of overdriven perfection. Bites harder than a sleeping alligator and clear as the night sky!
And bobby was really holding his own in the 80s. Covering a lot of vocal. Contributing good songs. Latin down the perfect canvas for jerry and Brent to paint on you know. And Phil was kicking ass per usual. Goddamn great time to be a head.
89- Spring 90 is one of the top three eras for the band. Jerry was sober and his guitar work was precise and faster than it had been in years (see video above). But Brent was taking a larger role, singing back up on Bobby's songs and the classics that he had not. He had his huge Blow Away moment that they played frequently during this era. To see this or Dozin' At the Knick (see Loser youtube videoua-cam.com/video/SvZJZkJi1g8/v-deo.html ) would have been big ole fat tits.. Absolute hell of a time to be a deadhead and I wish I was old enough to have experienced it.
I was somewhere in that crowd. This was a fun show and a great show. That is why the band themselves released the whole show through the record company. Loved it. Thanx for posting this.
So many memories. Last east coast show before I moved to Vegas 3 weeks later. Missed some killer EC shows esp at the Knick & MSG, but as if the Boys knew of my longing they started playing the Silver Bowl in 91. Plus I was able to catch shows at Shoreline, Cal Expo, Compton Terrace, McNicols, Eugene & of course Oakland-Alameda Co. that I probably wouldn't if i had stayed in NY or DC so all's good. GODDAMN I MISS DEAD SHOWS!
The Grateful Dead could do on a good night what no other band I ever saw could do and that's literally be so goddamn good that it became scary, when it would get get that musical telepathy going and it'd be SO intense that I'd be like, "OK, that's enough, bring it down now," and I could take a LOT of sensual and emotional intensity. They learned early on in the Acid Test days that they had this power; when everything coalesced and it became actualized it was really something to behold. I've heard others talk about the "fear" and "scariness" one could occasionally experience at a Dead show. What times those were. :)
+Jim Foxworthy You got that right brother. You hit every nail square in the middle of the head. You betcha, the first time I saw the dead in 1969 at the Hollywood bowl they scared the bejesus out of me. Pure Cosmic power they had. And I was not even high.
It hit me when I was walking around the Oakland Coliseum once and looked around noticing every si gel person was dancing even the shirt vendors and hotdog venders... the joint was jumpin!
Went to the Dead and Co. concert at Hollywood Bowl in May 2017. Felt like the good old days, John Mayer filled in, pretty good. But really was missing Jerry. When they played He's Gone wanted to cry. Wish I had been at this show. Jerry at his finest!
I keep coming back to this recording. It is right up there with Dew from Cornell, or Europe 72. The guys are absolutely killing this. And they are all just acting like it is no big “Deal”. Perhaps just another routine sound check. Ho hum.... A previous poster mentioned how they loved that Jerry let go of the guitar for a sec right before the beginning of the last jam. I hadn’t noticed that before but it truly must have been one of those moments where Jerry just felt it coming on and had to regroup for a sec because he was about to go into orbit. And of course he did! Good god, thanks for posting this!
I woke up hearing this in my head this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good morning, Jerry!!!!!!!! Thank you, honey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya woke me up with me smilin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap! What a version that was! All of you are right, Jerry was wicked on that nite! Man I miss him!! Now on a lighter note, I don't miss Bob in those shorts..
Sometimes we live no particular way but our own Bobby was always the most innocent of them. I've got story that will blow your minds! if I twittered it would be @ourtimetogether Sometimes we live no particular way but our own
sunshinenblues love to hear it but I don't do twitter or any other social media..other than UA-cam this is as social as I get..lol..only because I love my music and like to share and hear other people's opinions
Wow ! Garcia at his best ! I have heard sooo many times how great the early days where and yes i love the 60s 70s stuff. But this is were he takes it to the atmosphere. I was fortunate anuff to hear a verison just like this in the early 90s. To be able to play this now i can still feal a bit of the magic.
damn! this is the best version ever! The fragment where you can see all the people dancing says everything we need to know: GRATEFUL DEAD IS THE BEST BAND EVER. ITS NOT EVEN A BAND, ITS A WAY OF LIFE
this track is in so many set lists, it's ups and downs are so versatile. It took me years to start listening to it, but since I have, it's been such a joy.
Yo thank for uploading this I owe you like ten grand for real okay five grand lol and respect this is so cool and smoking hot is version is the best ever thank you
Some of my best memories are of being at Dead shows. Nothing like them. No band could stand on the gas for 15-20 minutes at a time like the dead. Watching 60,000 people dance on their seats while the fat man channelled Clarence White, Coltrane, Miles, Lester Flatt.... it was always amazing, pandemonium
BEST DEAL gone down! Right there in the 'Heartland' boys & girls. Make no mistake...the 'dragon' was all lit up that night! Thank you Jerry for the glorious experience we witnessed and lost ourselves in that night.
I've had a falling out with the dead over the last few years, but man oh man I couldn't help gettin' a big ol' grin on my face during Jerry's second solo. That and Bobby's pink Richard Simmons shirt and daisy dukes 😂
Well said
Listen to Rory Gallagher, man was purely devoted to the blues and performing
Jimi Hendrix and John Frusciante are amazing aswell.
Duane allman on the early tracks is untouchable. Allman brothers kill it. Similar music too
When they were on, they were really on. I miss the type of songs they played. They were all about the wild west, women, gambling, conflict, etc. American as it gets.
Don't forget trains and truckin.

Hail to all of you deadheads out in cyber space and beyond. One of my favourite cuts. They were unique . Regards.
Oh man Jerry is rippin, Its amazing to be so amazed after all these years.
Amazing ain't it. UA-cam is a great memory lane tool

Exactly. Great is great.

Its great to hear that from a young guy. Im so sick of these young kids who listen to rap and music with no depth or feeling behind it. Good job D ad!
I just turned 20, so we’re probably the same age, I’m in the exact same boat as you! My dad raised me on classic rock, and it seems like no one else nowadays is able to understand this music anymore.

Blake you are so right pass it on . I think Garcia and Hunter were the best … what's that called , Synergy .

Jerry is playing here like the old Fillmore days of the '60's......he's on FIRE on the last solo.....jesus christ!
That entire summer Jerry was on fire! Seeing him move onstage like that was rare in the late 80's. Really going after it. I must have seen him a dozen times on the West coast that year. Great memories!
Crazy fire!
He couldn't play like this in the 60's.... he didn't have the theory chops back then that he had in 89
Playin' for his life man! The Mafia must've been there!
Beautiful. Jerry's playing at it's finest. Band was tight as hell on this one. I miss Jerry. Can I go back in time please?
These are the moments that transcend the Dead from a great band to legends that will be listened to forever.
never heard him play so good, outstanding!
nice to see Weir break into the little smile at the end of the second solo. kinda like "oh yeah, that's why we're here.."
Smokin hot is an understatement....
I'm totally in agreement with you there! more like straight fire!🔥
Classic Jerry
Someone find a better Deal. I've listened to this one 50 times. Truly smoking hot
Jerry pretty much smokes most guitarists under the table.
jeff skosich alpine valley, same tour, off the Downhill from here video. My opinion is a better Deal.
This was one of the best shows they ever did. That's why they released the whole thing through the record company. I was there, this was a whole lot of fun. Loved it. Longtime Deadhead, 37 years. Thanx for posting this.
2:00 Bill hears Jerry bring the solo to the next level and smiles big
Lsd is a strong thing my friend, perhaps that answers your question, mann...
Lol =]

Favorite song. Favorite performance. Smoking hot is right, if i could time travel anywhere it would be here!
I'm so glad I got to exist on earth at the same time as the music of The Grateful Dead. Thanks, Universe!
"It goes to show you don't ever know
Watch each card you play
and play it slow"
My favorite lyrics, they go through my head everyday.
I love when Jerrys happy on stage he does that little Charlie Murphy head dance. 😆😆
It is almost impossible to write words that describe how good this is. Just straight fire from start to finish!
Jerry just took that to another level.
I was right in front of Jerry during this show, making a damn fool of myself most of the first set with stuff I won't write here. Last time he sings, "Watch each card you play..." you hear him sing, "Children PLEASE take it slow..." He was looking right at me. Love and miss you Jerry!
Yo wtf, the end of the second solo they all just knew when to stop and come back to the song. Greatest most magical band everrrr😂
I'm now convinced I had the pleasure of seeing the Dead at the peak of their grateness.
I've needed this for so long ..n had it on phone all along. Grateful Dead as wake up call. I don't have a negative thing to say on any song and video I hit except I wish my speaker's were louder
+Mary Merryfield if your phone has blutooth, get a blutooth speaker and enjoy
I'm with you on the speakers, honey!!!!!!!!!! Unfortuately, this is NOT my computer, so I really have no say in the matter!!!!!!!!! But I'm enjoying driving the spell check nutz!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Lynne Fisk that's what I'm thinking, it's not loud enough on the phone.
Headphones
iPhone speaker had some volUME!'n
Can’t watch this in America but I’m on vacation and I can watch this. Love you guys ❤
A lot of dudes here mentioning the second solo but man I really love that first one, especially when he’s goin high on 1:58
Whoa! I will never stop being amazed by this music. Rocks my soul. If you get confused...
Smoking hot you weren't kidding. Thanks for sharing that little piece of brilliance.
Just when i think i heard it all then this ! All i can say is wow ! This was Jerry at his best. Two thumbs up !.
Good watchin Garcia do what he does best..Hes in good spirits, shreddin that solo, go Jerry!
Their energy is contagious.
DEAL in my opinion is a really underappreciated Dead song , seen lots of shows in the 80s and for me Deal still stands out as one of the best ever of the era, awesome version here for sure
Last couple days it's been growing and now I've gotta declare 1989 as the ultimate year for "Deal" ! ;D
Noce video. Good quality sound and a smoking solo at the end. A reminder of why Jerry has so many devotees.
There is no lineup ever musically, melodically, harmonically like this band, ever!
...what a kickass version! just found it tonight...listened to it like...4x in a row... yeah, it sure is "Smokin" !!!
Jerry's tone in this is otherworldly, literally the definition of overdriven perfection. Bites harder than a sleeping alligator and clear as the night sky!
Jerry, fresh out of 1st stint in rehab; Brent, yet to OD on heroin. Was a good time to be a Dead Head.
wish i had been
It is always a good time to be a Dead Head ❗️
And bobby was really holding his own in the 80s. Covering a lot of vocal. Contributing good songs. Latin down the perfect canvas for jerry and Brent to paint on you know. And Phil was kicking ass per usual. Goddamn great time to be a head.

Vicki Brouwer how many shows did you go to man
I was somewhere in that crowd. This was a fun show and a great show. That is why the band themselves released the whole show through the record company. Loved it. Thanx for posting this.
I used to love playing this song, most often as our last. Always leave em wanting more!

I had the best 3 years of my life on Grateful Dead tour spring summer fall and winter 1988 to 1990
Me too. I’ll never forget or regret those days.
Went to the Dead and Co. concert at Hollywood Bowl in May 2017. Felt like the good old days, John Mayer filled in, pretty good. But really was missing Jerry. When they played He's Gone wanted to cry. Wish I had been at this show. Jerry at his finest!
My gosh. They were just so good.
J. Cordell Steinmetz They were the best. Nothing will ever compare
Anytime I need to be happy I listen to LIVE Dead like this and I can't help but cheer up and want to dance!
I keep coming back to this recording. It is right up there with Dew from Cornell, or Europe 72. The guys are absolutely killing this. And they are all just acting like it is no big “Deal”. Perhaps just another routine sound check. Ho hum....

Sparkling, glistening, brilliant! Thank You for posting this!
Love how much fun they're having. Even after almost 30 years of playing thousands of shows.
I was at this Show it was so good. One of my favorite of all times. Brent went off..
Wow ! Garcia at his best ! I have heard sooo many times how great the early days where and yes i love the 60s 70s stuff. But this is were he takes it to the atmosphere. I was fortunate anuff to hear a verison just like this in the early 90s. To be able to play this now i can still feal a bit of the magic.

this got my heart going love the grateful dead!
Holy moly! Jerry's got the chops and the ear to rip like a champ!
damn! this is the best version ever! The fragment where you can see all the people dancing says everything we need to know: GRATEFUL DEAD IS THE BEST BAND EVER. ITS NOT EVEN A BAND, ITS A WAY OF LIFE
This song is my poker anthem.
Preach!
Straight fiiiiirrrreeeee. Added to favorites.
Quite possibly the very best show IVE attended........thats called being in the groove.....
wow nelly! i was never into this song...until THAT solo! holy smokes!
this track is in so many set lists, it's ups and downs are so versatile.
It took me years to start listening to it, but since I have, it's been such a joy.
I learned to love the lyrics over time, and that's what brings me back to a lot of songs like this, and Loser repeatedly.
Yo thank for uploading this I owe you like ten grand for real okay five grand lol and respect this is so cool and smoking hot is version is the best ever thank you
Awesome!!! Definitely were on fire that night
RIP Jerry,
After 47 years of following this band, I gotta say this is amazingly good. This is why we went.
Buffalo, NY...Saw it and loved it !!!!!!!!!!!
Baseball, Apple Pie and Grateful Dead! Miss you Jerry!
Holy smokes. I was there. :-) Thank you very much, Bigbeahner!
I Was at this show in Orchard Park NY - the vibe of this show was amazing
Can't get enough of this turns me inside out! WOW
Totally sick. Glad I bought my dad this DVD. I recall the "touch of grey" is just superb also
Incredible! Genius! There will never be another band like the dead.
Man! Jerry was "poppin those notes out like hot rivets!" To quote Phil.
The best melodic improvisationist ever.
Yes, indeed-ee! Definitely one of the best tracks of that era!
I've had a falling out with the dead over the last few years, but man oh man I couldn't help gettin' a big ol' grin on my face during Jerry's second solo. That and Bobby's pink Richard Simmons shirt and daisy dukes 😂
I miss those days. So much innocent peaceful fun. They understood how to be good to their fans.
i was there....do not remember too much other then it was fantastic times back then....
Smokin is right. Praying Dead and Co decide to play this in Philly!!
+rachel and wheeling WV.
DAMN! That was smokin’ hot. Jerry absolutely crushed it.
Mervellous interpretation. Thank you.
