What I love about your videos is that you are just one of us. You're not superhuman, running multiple marathons and ultras all year round, but you have the same trials and problems as the rest of us, but have a knack for making engaging watchable content.
Whatever you decide, I hope you don't feel you *have* to run, or even make videos. Don't even feel like you have to be training for something. Just run because you like it. Or not. 🤷
I like this sentiment and I agree with it.
Thanks Wendy, decided on the 10k
Up to you of course. I would run the marathon and just enjoy it. Forgetting about your pace and the time. Walk if you have to. I know you can do it! 💪🏻
Thanks mate for the encouragement 👍
I'd pick the 10k. Good luck with whatever you do
10k it is Suzie
@@HereWeAreRunning yay!!! Good luck!!
G'day Chris. Sorry to hear that things didn't work out as planned. That's life bud! Go for the 10km. You can get around that comfortably and have a bit of fun. If you do the marathon you are setting yourself up for possible injury which could derail opportunities for later in the year. That's not a risk that I'd be prepared to take. Thanks for keeping it real. That's why I love following and supporting you. We get you warts and all, haha! Best to you mate, Phil
I like Chris s channel because of how genuine he is
Hi Chris, Wishing you all the best for Sunday. Hopefully you'll get some decent weather and have fun on the 10km. Cheers! Phil
Thanks Phil, I'm on my way to run the 10k
No need to apologise Chris, we watch your videos because you are real , like the rest of us, trying our hardest in the sport yet juggling work, family and health. Stay real.
Thanks Joanne, I'm doing the 10k
10k makes sense to me. Good luck whatever you decide to do.
Thanks Bobby 👍 😀
Got to be the 10k race Chris. Have fun and enjoy it 👍Doing the marathon could cause more harm than good
Thanks Matthew 👍 😀
Work sounds brutal Chris, hope that eases soon! Maybe the best idea is to switch out of the marathon, I can't imagine you'll be able to enjoy it.
Thanks Thomas, yes brutal is a good way to describe it.
I’m in same boat. Signed up just after LM took over, but had double hernia op end Jan and now have ankle joint issues. LM confirmed no refund but didn’t mention the 10K option. For me it’s run/walk marathon or gentle jog the 10K. Think the 10K sounds favourite. Less chance of injury and better prep to get ready for races later in year
I hope your hernia and ankle issues heal soon so that you can run well again.
Hope it all works out for you, sounds like you've had it tough👍
Run the marathon! Not all training plans go perfectly, take your time and enjoy the race, no pressure for a certain time 👏
This is bad advice -- Chris will hate the marathon if he is not properly prepared and ends up walking in hours after the main pack of runners finishes the race.
I’m 2 weeks away now and my training has also been hit and miss, hoping tomorrow’s planned 20 mile run goes well enough for the Brighton marathon. Had to miss the Cambridge half marathon 4 weeks ago because I managed to split my head open requiring it to be stapled the weekend before it. Glad to hear there’s another option available as I might be joining you on the 10k. I’ve had another option pop up on my socials about running the Manchester marathon towards the end of April for a charity called shelter if you think you might be ready by then.
Good luck with your race
Chris I’ve been in that boat before! Keep running and looking after yourself in the next 3 weeks and build towards it and run the marathon. Another few weeks decent miles will get you back. Enjoy the day it will be great fun as long as you go to enjoy !
Only managed to run at the weekends so opting for the 10k
Chris, I'm in a very similar scenario with regard to Manchester Marathon on the 16th of April... decisions, decisions, decisions...
You have to believe in yourself to go for it!
I enjoy your videos, whether your running it's a success or not!
Thanks Mariela, I've opted for the 10k
Hi Chris! Please look after yourself, you come first🙏
Run the 10k, enjoy the atmosphere of Brighton plus you can watch those finishing the marathon afterwards.
Good plan
Injured, although starting to come back now. And I have Boston. I wish I could defer etc but its too expensive to lose so I'll be doing it. I started rynning for fun not times!
Best of luck Victoria 👍
I'd do the 10km if I were you
I got London in the ballot, and was already signed up to Brighton, so I'm doing Brighton v slow and will just run as much of it as I want. I understand the situation, but the Brighton 'deferral' option is so cheeky!
Good luck
Must be something about the Brighton this year !!! I was on 40 plus miles and comfortably running the 17 mile long run and ... click, my knee has just stopped me dead so I'm a no show. Abingdon in the Autumn
Sorry to hear that, hope the knee recovers quickly
Hi Chris, bummer to hear about your training. I'm in a similar position to you. A few weeks ago I had severe tightness in my calf after a long run, then two days later we got a huge snow storm and the combination of all the snow shoveling + helping to push out two cars stuck in the snow and the calf tightness turned into a muscle strain. So now I haven't been able to run for basically 3 weeks (starting week 4 now). Not sure I'll have enough time to come back and get in enough training before my scheduled marathon, April 22. A decision for me is fast approaching. Not fun. Hoping the best for you!
Sorry to hear that Andy, hope your situation turns out OK.
I had to defer the Brighton Marathon last year because of injury. My training has been going fairly well albeit I’m very much slower than last year but I’ve decided to go ahead as I won’t get my money back….I’m sorry you’ve had so many obstacles….and after your amazing run last year I can imagine that running this would be a comedown for you….Whatever you decide I think you owe it to yourself to run…. And maybe aim for a walk / run marathon instead ? Or go for the 10k ….. but I would go for something! It’s been great to see you training and I was worried when you didn’t post anything for a few weeks 😢
Thanks Emma, I decided on the 10k. Good luck
You too!
The 10k makes sense and would give you a good benchmark of your current fitness. Running the marathon under prepared would achieve nothing other than possibly demoralising you and increasing the risk of injury.
Can't disagree with that Guy 👍
10k all the way Chris! It's a fun distance and still gives you a reason to get out and run. It's worth turning up for race day atmosphere too!
Very true 👍 👌
I'm in the very same boat myself. Had a 3 week cold that I couldn't shake, and life so busy at the moment. So, you are not alone! - I was training for a half on April 1st, but I've dropped to the 10K.
I'm sure they'll be others in the same boat as us. Hope you enjoy your 10k.
Hi Chris, I reckon you should go for the 10km and treat it as a speed session and fun day out with no pressure. There will always be other marathons... Good luck mate.
Doing the 10k Steve, hopefully it'll be fun
Only you can make the decision. Personally, I would run/walk/complete.
Got to go for option 2 I’d say. Have a nice day out on the 10k instead.
There’s always next time to put in a good training block for a marathon 💪👍
Definitely hope that next time, I won't get these sorts of problems.
Hey Chris. I say run the 10k and then support at the marathon 😀 It's a long way to run if you haven't done the long runs 🙂
Thanks Claire 👍 😀
Thanks
10K...a good distance that you know you can achieve easily and will give you something to aim for, and should be a good morning/day out.
I signed up for my first race ever (Longleat 10K) as something to aim for after I had my appendix removed last August, completely lost my fitness and started cycling gently at first and then running in October. Unfortunately I was ill for pretty much the whole of December and come January I had 29 days to prep/train for the 10K, certainly gave me a target and I did better than expected :) Hope your recovery goes well.
That's great to hear Dave, well done. These challenges that life throws in our way are always there to test us, aren't they.
Great video mate good to see you back out running do the 10k mate not worth the risk getting injured and then not been able to run at all
10k it is
Aw so sorry to hear uv had a rough few weeks Chris, the important thing is that ur ok 😊 …… so personally, I would probably go for option 2 - if u done the marathon there’d be no doubt that u would finish it, but my guess is that u will get absolutely no satisfaction from doing it in the slightest, so why put ur body through the ordeal …… get a few good runs under ur belt over the next few weeks and take a trip for the day do a nice 10k have abit of dinner and just see we’re ur fitness is at and use it as a reset button - plus u will have got something from ur money aswell, well providing u don’t go to a Michelin Star restaurant for your dinner !! Do what u feel is ultimately best for you Chris - no stress 😎🙌🙌 x
Thanks Clair, going for the 10k
Go for the Marathon, you can walk if needs be you probably got more in the tank than you think. Forget time, and just enjoy the race
Option 2, do the 10 km. Marathons are hard even with proper training, it’ll just be an endless slog to do it without the training. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
My thoughts exactly
Good advice, 10k it is
Good advice, 10k it is
Sorry your training hasn’t gone to plane, I’ve been there myself. If you really feel doing the marathon is out of reach I say go for the 10k. It’s such a great event and the atmosphere is brilliant. That’s why we put ourselves through these tough training blocks😂🏃♂️You will have a fantastic day
Thanks David 👍 😀
I was going to suggest that you run the Brighton Marathon with or as a 5hr Pacer / cheerleader and will on all the people doing their first marathon or struggling as that would be a fun/inspirational video (like your pacer videos) but then you did use the phrase cant run the distance which suggests to me as you know your body better than anyone, you will be better off running the 10km and enjoying it. PB's and good finishing times are out of the window at this point, you need to run easy and soak up the atmosphere (EDIT: And give us content. We all want to see a video even if you film the Brighton Marathon Weekend as a spectator)
Thanks Paul. I'll definitely have to make a video whatever the decision and I agree, whatever I do it'll be about enjoyment and not times.
Sounds like life has been tough mate. I would say you have to run the marathon mate. You can complete the race. It might not be as comfortable or as quick as you want but you can do the distance. Do the race mate! 😎🤘
This 👆🏼
I think it's proven that marathon training needs commitment and commitment needs time but sometimes life doesn't give you the time required.
It's got to be the 10K, so you can enjoy the race and the fantastic Brighton atmosphere. Running a marathon with very little training will just be a horrible experience.
Hoping to enjoy it
Option 3. Don’t do any event and reset. Sorry to hear that things haven’t gone to plan this training block Chris. Time to reset and go again. Take care
Thanks Mark. A reset is definitely on the cards.
Go for option 3.
Worthing Half end of April
I think do the 10k Chris 👍🏻
👍
Sorry you’ve had such a rough few weeks, but glad you’re on the mend. I reckon go for the 10k - means you’ve got a focus for 2 April rather than being sat at home feeling fed up on the day.
Thanks Nick. Definitely on the mend from the illness, just need to hope the work settles down a bit now.
Definitely option 2 Chris. To run 26.2 at this stage would be foolish and potentially cause injury
Thanks Neil, wise words 👍
Tough luck is an understatement here. It's obvious that a full marathon is out of question, especially with no long runs. So how about asking for a downgrade to half marathon or even 10K?
Yes, the downgrade to the 10k is an option.
See you tomorrow at Brighton😊
I've decided on the 10k. Good luck for your race.
If it were me I'd still do the marathon. Just take it easy and perhaps eveb do a run/walk strategy.
I think the decision needs to be based on what you plan to do next. If you plan to do some shorter races then doing the 10k as a way of seeing where your fitness currently is makes sense. If you want to do a longer race such as another marathon or perhaps even an ultra then I would just write off the whole event and reset ready to go again with a new plan.
10k it is
Am doing the Brighton marathon and my training has been terrible, had a few injuries and I've gained some weight. Was aiming for the 4 hour mark but now my aim is the 5 hour mark hopefully.
I should say do the marathon and do what am doing, not for time and speed, just a (hopefully) nice easy long run.
Ryan, I am in the 4.30-4.35 group and havent had the best training block either. Good luck! The first half is much more hilly because of the new sections added so take it easy first half and then the second half will hopefully be manageable . . .
Best of luck Ryan, sorry to hear that your training hasn't gone well either.
Sorry to hear this. You could run walk the marathon. Or do the 10k only you can make the decision
Thanks Penny 👍 😀
Go for the 10k. Life happens and although you’re likely disappointed, making a decision you won’t regret is important. Then if you’re not up to running the 10k for a PB, just run it and enjoy it as a regular run.
I hope it's going to be fun today
Option 1: torture yourself
Option 2: fun 10k race!
Option 3: be 70 quid out of pocket
This is a tough one...
When you put it like that 😄
Just do the marathon Chris, just to show us normal runners that training blocks aren’t perfect and it’s ok to walk from time to time. Maybe you could Jeff it, run a mile then walk for a minute or 2. You’ll get there eventually 👍🏻
No, don't do the marathon - it will be too painful if you're not prepared, and you will hate walking in hours after the main pack of runners has finished.
Got to think about keeping my body in reasonable shape for the rest of the Spring and Summer so have decided on the 10k.
@@HereWeAreRunning I'm very happy you will do the 10K instead of trying to force the marathon upon your body when it's not ready. Good decision! I look forward to your next videos about it.
@@HereWeAreRunning Chris, from me, who is much older than you are -- [73] - you've got to think about keeping your body in shape NOT just for the rest of the Spring and Summer .... but for the rest of your life!!! I'm still running at 73 -- I bet you want the same thing.
I would do the 10k with the mindset of taking it easy / enjoying it. Might as well do something if you've paid for it
Certainly good to have the 10k as an option.
Use the marathon as a slow long run and enter a different marathon at the beginning of April. Even if you walk 10 miles of it it will still be a great day out
👍
There is a four-mile race in New York City's hilly Central Park on April 2 -- jump on a plane and come join us !!!! (Race is put on by the same running organization that puts on the New York City Marathon.)
Bit of a long journey! But sounds like good event.
@@HereWeAreRunning Thank you for complimenting my upcoming race. The New York Road Runners puts on about 50 races a year, mostly road races but some grass-and-dirt races and some winter indoor track races, as well as their world-famous New York City Marathon. I hope you can bring your family over here someday to run one or more of the New York Road Runners races. Your son could go play "air guitar" in famous Central Park. Remember when he was doing that in the background of one of your videos .... probably without asking you if it was okay?
10k Chris to enjoy the atmosphere of the race.😊
Yep, 10k it is
Wow, Chris, what kind of work do you do, to have wake-up calls in the middle of the night? Are you something like an emergency-room doctor, or a computer database administrator that gets called whenever a corporate computer system crashes in the middle of the night??? I am so sorry you are having illness and "no time to train" problems (as you called it in a previous video). I hope things get better for you soon, as someday I would like to see you take another try at the Manchester Marathon.
Thanks Cathy. I'm in IT but not a technical role but a role that gets called when things aren't as they should be. Hopefully it'll settle down soon.
@@HereWeAreRunning Chris, thank you for your reply! I had a hunch it might be IT-related, since you mentioned middle-of-the night calls, which would either be IT or hospital emergency services. Before I retired, I worked for an international IT firm and know all about late nights and midnight calls. I once worked on a software project that was so "intense" that we had air mattresses on the floors in the offices for all-night sessions trying to get ready for a Go-Live. I'm too old for all that pressure now ...but young enough to still run marathons. 😇
@@HereWeAreRunning On the software projects I worked on [before I retired] our teams were divided into (1) technical and (2) functional. I was a lower level worker in the functional part of the team. It's possible I would understand the kind of work you do. It takes a VERY smart person to do this kind of work -- well done, Chris.
If you don't believe you could finish the marathon then switch to the 10K. If you don't think you could even race the 10K then drop it all.
I would just do the Marathon. Walk if you have to, don't worry about time.
If I were you, I would run the 10k at the best of my ability to use it as a fitness test and see where I am in order to make a plan for the rest of the year.
Not a bad idea 👍😀
Interesting.
10k has to be!
Now onto more important things ME ME ME... 😁
I had one of my regular races last Saturday (realised it was a Saturday event at 5pm on the Friday)
Larmer Tree full marathon - 98% off road: good tracks/footpaths, well marked. Several *must walk* hills.
It was my first full marathon for 3months so I was pleased with 31st place (130 runners) 4hrs 30mins. The last 10k ish took 90+ minutes! To put the time in perspective only 9 runners under 4hrs, the winner doing 3hr 44mins.
April is busy!
Devizes half (local)
Yeovil 10k (local)
London Full
North Dorset Full (local)
all road, my hope is to give them all my best shot.... all of them after turning 66....it seems like yesterday I was 64 🤔
Happy running - and do the 10k!
Is it kind to brag about your own running in video comments where Chris expresses his disappointment at not being able to do his planned upcoming marathon? I don't think so.
10k for sure.
Always interested to hear your updates, keep them coming.
@@HereWeAreRunning
Thanks for your comment 👍
10k chris
Chris, you might "kill" your love for running if you force yourself to run the marathon while relatively unfit -- so maybe do the 10K as a "fun run" -- or just sleep in and go for a walk on a nearby beach instead and just re-start "serious" training once you have time and motivation again. Forcing yourself through a marathon will be too painful and will make you hate running.
I struggled at Manchester after a shorter than usual training block and this is worse, so definitely taking that into consideration when making my decision.
@@HereWeAreRunning Remember, at Manchester you also had stomach / digestive issues also, which unfortunately could have happened even with a longer training block. See, I pay attention when I watch your videos!!!!
Hi Chris I’d emailed them sometime ago about doing the same switch but heard nothing? Where did you get their email address from?
I think I just used the contact form on the website. They replied after several days. Hope they respond to you too, Rob.
10k I think you risk getting injured if you do the marathon and then been out even longer with injury
Thanks Richard 👍 😀
I see you there if you still go
I'm doing the 10k, good luck
I’m sorry Chris, it’s been a rotten time for you. I would go for the 10 k personally. 😀
Thanks Tina. I'm not going to lie, it's not been a great time recently. Hopefully things improve soon.
Disappointed for you Chris. In saying that, a 10k is definitely achievable and a just reward for all the training and effort you put in, prior to your illness. Good luck.
10k it is Rod
Why not do the 10k at least you’ll still be able to do a race that weekend 👍🏻
10k it is
Do the 10k, don't think you would enjoy the marathon, given the circumstances
Good advice
Not such a cheery video from you here Chris. Rotten choices you have. I know what I would do but only you really know what you should do. I hope you make the best choice for you and no regrets
Going with the 10k
