- It's an odd thing how sometimes an awful lot of work looks like NO work was done, if you do it right...
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
These are things I get asked about a lot :

Weller SPG 80L soldering iron (chassis work)
Rigol DS1054Z digital oscilloscope
Thsinde 18B+ digital multimeters

Below are things that make this channel possible that people don’t usually think about. If any of these companies want to send me new and wonderful toys, I’m open to that. I can’t take free stuff when it comes to the amps I review, etc, but for the stuff below, bribe away!

Thanks, Lyle, for completing this series of repairs. As a non-reverb Princeton owner (72 SF), I was waiting anxiously for this last installment!!! I love mine with both pedals and especially humbuckers! It just sings 😊
Right? I used to have Princeton Reverbs, but prefer the non-reverb because I prefer clean tones. Now I know why the plug socket on the back was removed on my 1970 Princeton, after reading below. The C10N speaker makes it obvious why these rare speakers are so loved by those who know, although Weber is my favorite alternative (I have 10F160 and 10A150). I built a tweed princeton in a class (too stupid to do it on my own), but it's a different little beast. At lower volumes the Princeton is my champ!
Lyle you are extremely articulate. I wondered about that until you revealed some of your history and previous vocation. Thank you for being apologetic on occasion when you misspoke. However we know how tricky it can be when you multitask work on an amp and video simultaneously. It speaks to your character as a gentleman
LOL . . . ditto on those panel screws . . . seems when I need a certain item/part and have it some place in the shop, I usually have order what I need and sho-nuf, as soon as i get the items/parts, I find the parts I needed, almost in plain sight . . . great job again 👍 and the Princeton sounds "sweet" . . .😎
I have one the same year and it is fantastic!
I really like that Amp and its in impecable shape for its age ,Very nice work Lyle
Nice playing! I need to build a Princeton with / for my kid. …at least that’s what I’ll tell the wife. Sounds lovely.
Regarding the rear panel screws, I like to add dress or "cup" washers to the lower end Fender amps, even though Fender only had them on the higher end amps back in the day. I know you can order them from the electronic parts suppliers, but I found a 10 or 12 pack of them at Home Depot for a reasonable price ($1.29 if I recall). I wonder what Fender intended to be plugged in to the courtesy outlet? I only use it on my Super Twin Reverb to plug in a small transformer to power a computer fan I installed to cool all of those tubes.
As always, beautiful work Lyle.
Impressive amount of work and attention to detail you put into these amps. 👏 Thank you for providing so much insight into the technical side of things. I believe your channel is starting some ripples in online communities and it’s great to see people getting back to thinking gear in terms of maintainability instead of being throwaway consumer electronics. Great stuff 🙌
Btw still hoping to see ‘64 handwired princeton review if you get one on the bench. Probably loads of spaghetti 🍝🇮🇹
It's great to be able to hear the amps with overdrive. Would be fantastic to hear the amps on full volume!
So good!
Damn your husky voice. I have to wait until I’m sick to film.
The only positive I see about getting sick, the golden throat voice! 😂
Best voice on youtube hands down
Whenever I have to order parts--almost always amp hardware--that I KNOW I already have but can't find, the new batch of parts come in and I find the old ones right where I want to put their replacements.
It is The Law. Are we not techs?
@@PsionicAudio Yarp.
One of my favorite amps.
It is always the last touch that they remember. :)
Putting things where I won't forget where I put it does not work anymore
1:09 commenting on a poor switch installation - “a female tech would have been too smart to do this”. Well done, Lyle, I’ve been married a long time, too. 😂
Female audio electronics technicians are few and far between, Colleen Fazio being an obvious exception, but years ago I knew a woman who specialized in repairing Nakamichi tape decks and she really knew her stuff.
I like the pedals!
Most people will use something.
Interesting as always.
Weber speaker, yep.
The best tech in the world
…couldn’t make it so I had to give it a shot.
I was hoping you'd do. Gimme shelter when the trem came on
I had always heard that the non reverb Princetons didn't sound that good, but clearly that's nonsense because this amp sounds very warm and characterful!
It doesn’t have as much gain, which is really apparent with single coils (though you can still get sounds). But it lurvs PAFs.
Some tips for those who are interested you can use Etchant solution to match the screws and Some bees wax so they go in the holes nice and easy
I prefer vinegar fumes. Takes longer but it’s controlled and it’s hard to overdo it.
What do you think about headstrong prinston reproductions
Good Morning ; )
2:40 Connecting the courtesy outlet after the switch and fuse does create a potential problem. Since any current drawn by a device connected to the courtesy outlet is also flowing through the fuse, the sum of the current in the primary and the courtesy device could cause the fuse to blow unnecessarily. I'm sure you'll advise your customer.
Yes, also that the courtesy outlet isn’t the way to go these days. Better to use an outlet strip.
But yeah, no phone charger here.
Alternatives would have been to splice one of the primaries or use the unused rectifier socket connections as junctions.
I chose the least intrusive/problematic option, though it does render the outlet (even more) useless.
Using an unused rectifier socket lug would be (in my opinion) an uglier solution. If this were my amp, I'd be okay with having the courtesy outlet switched and fused as long as I was aware of the issue. I'd probably stick a child-proofing device into it and call it a day.
Those bear traps hurt
My bear feet 😉 are too big to fit in the trap! 😆
🙂 How many duplicate tools have I got?
Greetings Sir.
Beautiful. For the panel screws, are they just any #8 oval head stainless steel? Or do you have a particular one that you like? Thanks!
#6 actually. I get them from CE or Mojotone when ordering other things but you could get them from McMaster. 1.25” is the typical length.
@@PsionicAudio good catch on the #6. Thanks. Stainless or nickel finish is most authentic, cosmetically?
What does the negative feedback switch do sound wise ? And fellow Princeton nerds: how do you like that Weber compared to other speakers ?
See the previous video to hear it. It’s kind of subtle but nice.
Does anybody know a good tech in North Georgia?
