The backstory of Shania Twain also involves the story of probably the most singularly important person in the music industry of relatively current times that most people have never heard of, that being Robert "Mutt" Lange. Shania's first and eponymous album went nowhere and did nothing, except get Mutt Lange's attention. By that time, he already had production or engineering credits for some of history's biggest and most lauded rock albums to his credit, and even some big songwriting notches. But then he heard about this "Shania Twain," and set out to Nashville to meet her. Business turned personal, and they were soon married. And then Mutt took the helm for her second album, "The Woman in Me." Which took off like a rocket. (You can hear his voice as background vocals occasionally on that album.) The third album, "Come On Over," to this day is the best selling country album and the best selling solo woman album ever.
So there you go. After doing all else, Mutt Lange conquered Nashville.
His name mutt suits him after what he did to Shania, he may have conquered Nashville, but he lost his marriage to Shania by his affair with her so called best friend and assistant, which shattered her for some time. Happy she found love again and back to performing.
Shania started country pop for women. She held her own out there against the men fighting for top spots on the billboard music charts.
