WTF Happened to Beauty and the Beast (1987 TV Show)?

  • The Beauty and the Beast fable ranks as one of the most filmed fairy tales ever written. There have been so many different versions, with arguably the animated Disney version from 1991 being the one that’s endured the most. But, many other versions exist, including the landmark Jean Cocteau version and this week’s subject of Gone But Not Forgotten, the 1987 TV version, starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman as the titular pair.
Boasting a writing staff that included none other than Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin, the TV version of Beauty and the Beast reimagined the fable as a contemporary fantasy show. Hamilton’s Beauty, aka Catherine, was no longer a peasant farm girl but a high-powered New York attorney. After a brutal attack, she’s nursed back to health by Ron Perlman’s Vincent, a kind of man/lion hybrid living in an underground society of outcasts. Physically massive, he has a kindly demeanour, which draws Catherine to him. In a departure from the original story, the Beast remains in his beastly form even after gaining true love, with the show aiming to explore the BeautyBeauty within.
While it only lasted three seasons, Beauty and the Beast has a strong following, thanks to the fantastic cast and Rick Baker’s incredible make-up. Its run was abbreviated because Hamilton left the show in season three to have a baby, and given that both she and Perlman went on to larger fame after the show ended, a reunion was never in the cards. Nonetheless, it remains an interesting curiosity, as we explain in this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, written by Jessica Dwyer, narrated by Travis Hopson and edited by Cesar Gabriel.

That’s when Beast lost the last bit of humanity he has left and let his heart fill with rage. Turning it to pure evil. Morphing him into a red monster with great big horns he chose to file down out of embarrassment for letting such hatred fill his heart. Only when he found love again did he change his name and dedicate his life fighting paranormal monsters. Little did he know, his beauty left to fight monsters of her own to save humanity from a future she was determined to alter.

I remember the pilot episode when Linda Hamilton's character started taking self-defense classes after she had been cut up and had healed from her scars. In particular I remember the scene where her instructor was pushing her particularly hard, and she all of a sudden look like she came unglued and was ready to kill him. At that point he stopped her and told her that was what she needed to reach, that point where she wouldn't hold back and was ready to do anything to protect herself. That was such a powerful scene.

12:00 - A more brutal tone to the show started with the first and second episodes (of the season) being a SWAN SONG for the Beauty in the title.
12:15 - The Writers penned a script where Catherine became pregnant with Vincent's son and gives birth to the child, She then DIES in Vincent's arms
12:42 - Though Lovers be Lost, Love Shall Not
12:49 - It is hard to have a series named Beauty and the Beast without the Beauty in the title but another strong female lead stepped into the series, Diana Bennett.

You're not missing much with not seeing all of season 3. Killing off Catherine pretty much killed the show for me too though I watched all 11 season 3 eps just to see what would happen with Vincent & his & Catherine's baby son. Gabriel was a really creepy villian & Jo Anderson did her best as Catherine successor Diana for the 10 eps she appeared in (though she & Vincent were just platonic friends) but I wish instead of dragging out 11 eps to struggle to gain more male viewers they instead just wrapped the series up with a 2 or 3 hour TV movie that gave Catherine & Vincent a happy ending then left it at that. Yes Vincent was united with his baby son by the end of Season 3 but for me it was bittersweet because of the way Catherine couldn't be there too.
So the Reader's Digest version for anyone who doesn't want to watch any or all of Season 3 but wants to know what happened: Gabriel kidnapped Catherine & killed her so her & Vincent's baby could be his own son then Vincent, Diana & several allies worked to find and defeat Gabriel and save the baby with Diana getting the honor of making sure Gabriel would be killed off and Vincent finally being united with his baby son (sorry Gabby, the baby was Vincent & Catherine's baby not yours!) with Diana standing nearby.

One of my favorites! Beauty & The Beast was a favorite story for me ask a kid, and seeing this as a teenager I was instantly hooked. And, yes - I was surprisingly attracted to Vincent! I was not at all surprised to discover it was Rick Baker responsible for the make-up, but I was surprised that I found it attractive (I never had before). I did like the love story, and thought the two actors had a great chemistry, but my favorite part was the "world below" and all the world-building there. I would have loved to see more. I was disappointed with the end, and at the time (remember, no Internet) there was a lot of speculation that they got rid of Hamilton because they didn't like the romance angle of the show, so fans were left very disappointed. The huge shift in season 3 seemed to confirm this. Really good review - you really get what made this series special!

No, at the time, we knew Linda wanted out because she was pregnant. Personally, I've never forgiven her for that, because that was the end of the show without Catherine. We didn't have the internet but we certainly burnt up the phone lines a lot within the fan base and calling CBS! I still think it MIGHT have worked if they would have replaced LH with a look-alike actress to continue on playing
Catherine. Would have had to been better than killing her and trying to replace her with that red head. Season 3 just does not exist. No one died, no one ever dies!

I loved this show so much that I bought the soundtrack and still listen to the tracks with Vincent reading poetry when I'm stressed. Thanks for this and for letting me know that Ron Pearlman read the poems in full costume and makeup! I've followed both his and Linda Hamilton's careers and while I think T2 is her best movie and Hellboy 2 is his best movie, I still love them best on this show.

This was a great show and both Ron and Linda were completely perfect in their roles. So many elements made the magic that was unique! I would venture to point out though that the Hallmark Hall of Fame series made a Beauty and the Beast made for tv movie back in the late 70's or early 80's with George C. Scott as the Beast and Trish Van Devere (who was his wife at the time) as the Beauty. That was actually pretty awesome, ranks with me as the best made for TV rendition of the story. That deserves a mention I think.

Damn if this retrospective didnt bring back some memories... Absolutely loved this back in the day. Never bothered with the 're-make' as the original was in my humble opinion, perfect. Also, when trying to design the Hellboy costume, they used a head model of Pearlman's head that they had cast for the Vincent character when they were working on that characters make-up. When they were finished, they realized, Pearlman had the perfect head shape to actually play Hellboy (as it had an uncanny likeness of the comic characters design), it was then he was asked to actually play the character.

OMG you had me crying. I just loved this show. The whole aspect of it was magical. I had seen Ron Perlman in "The Name of the Rose" and "The Clan of the Cave Bear" before I began watching "Beauty and the Beast". As for Linda, I'd only seen her in "The Terminator" and "King Kong Lives" before B&B. Then there was Roy Dotrice who I remembered as Commissioner Simmonds in two episodes of "Space: 1999". Then Edward Albert I'd seen in many episodic television shows including his turn as an unstable murderer in "The Rookies" with his then fiancee, Kate Jackson, and many other made-for-television films. This show became a sort of whose who for actors who went on to do other shows and films.
Thank you for your great video remembering an amazing show. Could I make some suggestions for future videos: Would love one on the aforementioned "Space: 1999" then a show I watched around the same time as "Beauty and the Best" called "Tour of Duty" starring Terence Knox, Stephen Caffrey, Kevin Conroy (I'm Batman), and Carl Weathers. And you mentioned "Forever Knight"...that one I'd love to see you do one on. Again, many thanks for taking me down memory lane of such an amazing show. I never watched the "remake". Thankfully.

Side note about Roy dotrice; he went on to narrate the first five of George RR Martin's song of ice and fire novels, brilliantly! Dotrice holds a world record for narrating the most characters in an audiobook. It's too bad he died of old age waiting for Martin to finish the last two books in the series, rodeo Trace was a truly incredible voice stage and screen actor. Now I understand the connection between Martin and dotrice!

I watched into season 3 of the remake 'cause... I don't know, I liked Kristen Kruek and was still in the bargaining phase of my mourning the original show. It's uuuh... it's fine. As it's own thing it's maybe... like a little bit better romance than most CW shows in season 1 and 3. Characters are fine. Not really unique though. The original just had such a presence, such an identity with this other world, as well as painting several other worlds within the city itself and exploring those finer, gruffer, darker and lighter elements of humanity in everything from it's writing to it's guest star characters. The series took it's concept and ran all the way with it in those beautiful matte paintings, gorgeous sets, interesting world building details, it was all there and cared for equally with such great passion.
CW Beauty and the Beast... I think there was passion there in season 1 for some of the story with Catherine, her mom, and Vincent himself. Those parts I thought were legit good. Season 2, don't bother. It's bad. It's stupid. It's pointless. Don't watch. Season 3, they decided to start actually caring about Catherine and Vincent's romantic relationship and them trying to make it work in the real world, which I actually thought was kind of nice as a concept. Everything else in the show by that point though becomes... eh. And then I stopped watching and haven't looked back since.

It was a great show, gently idealistic and focusing on a love story that wasn't just lust and hormones, but a real spiritual connection. The World Below became a sort of mental refuge for people who felt out of place in the world. The acting was superb, and the emotions felt real....I guess one of the things that helped it age so gracefully.
