- Since the first reincarnation of USA-made Charvels in 2008 I have always been a big fan of Charvel San Dimas' and So Cals. Growing up I was very fortunate to be a user to of Japanese and Mexican-made (2016) Charvels and have loved them so much that I have developed quite the collection over the years. For the longest time I really was beginning to think 'how do you top that?' Then in January 2018, the DK24s showed up following the release of the limited edition Super Stock DK24 in Matte Black the previous year. I had such a rush of excitement about how the Charvel product range was diversifying and evolving with subtle (not so subtle) new features including 24 frets, sculpted neck heels, deeper body contouring, a repostioned input jack and new finishes. Fusing the vintage with the modern to create high quality guitars with uncanny appeal. In June 2018 the DK24 2pt guitars were launched and designed to do the same thing but with a more modern edge. Building on the previous DK24 2pt range, these new HH models represent another shift forwards in the Charvel evolution. With new features borrowed from more expensive Charvel guitars in the artist range including the caramelised maple neck (although not birdseyed or flamed) and series/parallel switch from Guthrie Govan's signature model, the deeper body contouring and neck heel from the soon to be announced Angel Vivaldi signature model. Other unique features include the EVH Bournes 500k low friction volume pot and the hilariously wacky but very useful Luminlays which glow in the dark. The Gotoh 510 bridge is brillant! Despite it's traditional appearance which might send shivers down the spines of Floyd Rose users at first, it has awesome tuning stability. Once new strings have been broken in, the Gotoh 510 bridge combined with the Charvel die-cast locking tuners stays in tune like a Floyd Rose would although it IS NOT designed for Floyd Rose divebombs. All in all the new DK24 2pt HH are absolutely fantastic, very high quality, even more diverse and authentic combined with the traditonal comforts of previous Charvel models - including the rolled fingerboard edges, hand-rubbed urethane finish and a compound radius fretboard ranging from 12-16 inches. The pickups in this guitar are a Seymour Duncan Full Shred Humbucker in the bridge and Alnico 2 pro in the neck. Every tone you could possibly need seems to be in these guitars. If you get the chance, try one out and buy one. I have a feeling you'll be just as excited about them as I am.
I bought one about a month ago.... and it’s absolutely flawless. It’s actually improved my playing by about 10%
Not 11%? Surely it must make you play better than an extra 10%...😁
really impressed with charvel recently, they are putting out some banging guitars!!!
you must be talking about the vivaldi one !
i was in a guitar center last week and saw a sub $600 neck-thru jackson that i was REALLY surprised by. the recovered guitar accumulator in me had a hard time leaving the store without it.
Any time I hear San Dimas I think of _Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure._
Excellent!!
😝 Me too !!
Thanks Cameron! I can always rely on you for a great review and outstanding playing.
As a sevenstring player this guitar has been hard to stay away from. Gorgeous. Best color too for this model.
Most useful review I've seen on these guitars. Great job!
Your playing is getting so much better. Absolute pleasure to listen to.
That's really kind of you to say. Thank you so much!
The first riff you played is just beautiful. Rarely do I use that word for a riff. I’ve been coming to this video every now and then just to listen to it.
Man you stoke me out so much. I'm in legitimate aww, again & again & again. Such a great player! TRULY kindred, absolutely Ed is smiling down on you. I bow down🛐 & always inspired!!! Thank. You!
I love the pickup configuration and switching. Just perfect to my tastes!
You just scorched my face off with that blistering solo at the beginning of the video.
Dude you just keep getting better and better blows me away , I’m loving this model no floyd or locking nut gotoh gear
I need this thing
*_Few guitars can beat or come close to the tonal diversity of this or most Charvels in general. Amazing neat playing Cam 🔥❤_*
Love the neck and body color combo- super sharp
Okay I come to this guys channel for guitar reviews but I cannot believe what an explosive player he is... I absolutely love the way this guy plays!
Impressed with your playing mate. This guitar seems awesome. Been looking at getting myself a new guitar in the near future and this one seems like it's going to be the one. Thanks for the great review!
i am in love with your guitar tone! great review btw.
Fucking awesome Cam! Never seen this one before. With the delay and the melodic tapping it really takes the whole vibe into another dimension bro! You’re are among the best guitar players ever. PERIOD. I’m always so jealous in the nicest of ways. As always that grainy rich overdrive really gives those power chords a mean growl!
Love the look of that one. Thanks for sharing. I may have to go shopping.
Great demo. Great playing. The Satch "Midnight" piece sounded like the studio version from "Surfing". The lead guitar stuff was amazing sounding playing and tone-wise. VH and beyond. I happen to just have bought one of these for under $600. In transit. Can't wait for its arrival.
That Brand New Start riff!!!! Killer playings dude \m/
That opening riff was a thing of beauty
thinking of buying this guitar, never had a charvel before but i tried it out in the shop and it was so good i loved it
Cameron KILLER INTRO MAN!!!
So I must share a quick story. yesterday while i was at my local guitar center getting my personal guitar re-strung. The store surprisingly had one of these on the wall to play. So when I spotted it I immediately went for it as I rarely see any charvel's there. All i can say is this is THE BEST guitar I have ever played bar none! And I definitely plan to get one in Matte blue Frost in the near future.
Learn how to string your guitar lol
I have the HSS version in shell pink, absolutely one of the best playing guitar in my collection, and I do own a number of US made guitars. And still, this Charvel stands out with its exceptional playability!!! After watching this, I’m seriously considering selling some other guitars to make room for this HH version in matte blue!!!
I have had the blue HH DK24 for about 3 years and no complaints!
Would love to own one someday. Tasty shred. Keep the 80s alive.
Thumbs up for that Alter Bridge riff at the end.
Beauty of an axe and stellar playing. Thumbs up Cam.
My next guitar. Thanks for the great review
Sounds really great Cameron of course you're playing it LOL
Thanks for your videos they’ve helped me improve my playing alot, also nice playing!
Great playing... that guitar sounds AMAZING!!!!!
Really enjoy your playing ! Very awesomely talented brother
I have this very same guitar for quite a while and it’s insanely good for the money, pickups are so versatile and compliment each other perfectly!
When bough it I came in for a core custom 24 but after a couple of hour of playing both, I couldn’t justify the price difference and the neck on the charvel was much better (lot less sticky). I also prefer this one over the Ibanez AZ, mainly because of the pickups !
I had a Model 7 in that color w/trans finish. As always, looking good and sounding good!
Damn, that colour is awesome.
Definitely gonna grab one, it sounds killer.
Cameron, you have to try a 1991 US Charvel (a limited edition in red or blue, with Jackson pickups) i played like 40 Charvel (1987-2018) it's the best/easiest neck by far, you're gonna love it. I'm playing it right now, it's insane.
Awesome is all I can say. Skills for sure brother.
Very impressive, and priced affordably, my next baby that's for sure, just love the pickup matrix options.
Killing it dude!!! Nice!!!
Thanks to you I'm sold on this. Next guitar for my stable lol.
Your playing is fantastic buddy!
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GUITAR I EVER SEE!!! 😍
I just bought a charvel because of your videos. It's a 2016 San dimas in rocket red. Really looking forward to getting it. Thanks for your awesome videos.
Cam sold me on charvel too. And I'm never looking back. I started with rocket red and then got the matte blue. You will be impressed. Charvel kicks ass.
Amazing playing!
Love this guitar and great playing
Love the punchiness of those cleans
Love the color of your guitar !
Yesterday I had the chance to try this DK24 in Burgundy Mist in my local music shop and I can confirm those Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 are totally insane instruments! They worth every penny imho.
Great review and playing as always. Will you be reviewing the new charvel Pro mod so cal style 2 that they premiered at namm 2020? Cheers.
Unbelievable sound! 🤩
Been subbed for a long time now, love the playing...would you consider doing a video on picking? Specifically when you pic and how best to utilise picking in leads?
spectacular color hope to see more vids of her
There are some particularly tasty phrasing going on here 😍
Are you from England?
I love the input location like that
fantastic playing!
Good lord, that tapping at the start should carry a seizure warning! Incredible!! Absolutely love your videos man. Somehow you keep getting better!
258lemons I totally agree man, the playing in this video as a whole is epic!
Well there’s a thing called practice. Something you do to get better...
@@Fredlund666 Yes I'm sure that's how he got so good!
Nice licks my man .... Killing it
1:16-1:38 made me audibly gasp! You were really shredding bro!
Charvel is killing it!
I don't care about the guitar, i just came to hear you play.
He can make a shitty squire sound good.
Hey Cam, I'm stuck between this and the Satchel bangle. I played this and the neck feels great, I've yet to see the bangle in person though. Wondering if it has the same feel? I'm into hair band and metal, which would you pick if only one?
That's some sweet licks!
Dude. I love CHARVEL SOOOOO MUCH!
Hey Cameron :)
How would you describe the feel of the fretboard compared to a rosewood fretboard? Im very unfamiliar with caramelized maple, and I dont like lacquered maple found on fender strats. I always prefer dry and fast finished on fretboard Would I like this?
fantastic demo m8
Super tasty playing, on one fine misty axe!
first! thanks for the vid... sounds fab mate
What an amazing guitar, and and Amazing player! I hope you do some tutorials in the future!!
Thank you! I have done lots and lots of tutorials in the past. They are some of my most popular videos
This year’s resolution was to not buy any guitars. I’ve violated it four times!(EVH x 2 and Guild x 2) With your exquisite demos there’s a very real possibility that a Charvel will make it five. I am but a human, flawed, fallible and madly in love with guitars!
Yes, I’m right there with you. I’ve broken my promise as well 😞
Raymond Barreras I’m starting to think we might need a support group for guitar addicts...
I think this is my new dream guitar. Someday.
Really love this guitar, specially the blue one. What do you think about the tuners? is it stable?
"Oh, yes... she will be mine".
Oh, yes.... she will be mine".
ordered this, same color. I've been looking for a compound neck super strat, and I didn't want to have to pay for upgrades. the bridge pickup seems a bit bright, but I'm used to the Duncan Jason Becker in my main strat, might need staggered tuners or a bone nut installed, but bang for the buck it sounds like a future favorite.
Take a shot every time he says "super". 😎
Thanks for this cool video! I'm thinking about getting one of these. 😃
Haha a word I was saying at that time!
Nice sweeps man!
This's nice one review, thanks
Hey mate this DK24 stay in tune with heavy use of tremolo? Can you do a video demo? Thanks so much
It's a very good guitar that you can rock out the neighborhood. It's a good mid- range guitar playable out of the box. It's owned by Fender. You know some may not realize this, but Epiphone and Squire have a lot of options and you don't have to modify. Playable out of the box and they are awesome. Phillip Austin
I wired series parallel switches in all my humbucker guitars for the past 20 years. I could never understand why this doesn't usually come with humbucker guitars. You want single coil tone without the noise, hit the switch.
Nice guitar and great playing by the way.
Also that guitar looks and sounds sick! What's the trem like compared to a Floyd trem though?
Hey Cam, great demo and playing. Liked the "Brand New Start" riff at the end.
I actually got turned on Charvel after watching some of your vids and subsequently got a San Dimas HH hardtail and recently an Angel Vivaldi model, both of which are just super nice. I'm thinking of getting one these new DK24 models but I'm hearing some mumblings that it doesn't stay in tune as well as people would like and the build quality is a little lacking. For my part, I always get my guitars set-up professionally so it might just be a matter of these new guitars not being out in the wild too much yet for a proper opinion.
Did you get the 6 string or 7 string Vivaldi?
Beautiful guitar!
i'm having tuning stability issues with mine, do you think a setup will fix this?
Thanks for the share great video!!
Cameron, I have the HSH version - with the way the 5 position switch works do you think one gets some of the benefit of the series-parallel tones like this one, or could a phase switch be added to get more useful tones?
Hey Greg, I personally wouldn't use a series parallel switch, it all depends on what you're after. Some players feel they need every single pickup setting under the sun. I am happy with 5 or 6 good ones from a 5 way or 3 way with coil split options. If you were add a switch to your HSH you massively devalue the guitar which in the end would make it harder to sell if you needed to.
Super cool review. Have you ever tried the Charvel Pro Mod San Dimas Style 1 SD3 HSS HT Sassafras Satin Black?
Nope. I can imagine it's very similar in feel and sound to any other San Dimas generally. Obviously the single coils will offer a lot of cool tones!
I am like many of the below commenters. I have the same guitar and, yes, it is amazing. It is so much guitar for the price point. I have played and owned many many guitars and this one is in the top 5. The amount of different tones that you can get out of it is amazing. Not only do you get the 5way switch with the Parallel/Series toggle. But, if you use the tone knob, that's what it's there for, then you can get an amazing range of sound. No need for many guitar changes at a gig. Unless you have different tuning. Also because of the way it looks you can play it at almost any gig without looking out of place. Overall 10/10 easily and for the price you can't go wrong. 🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸
Those full shred pickups are bad ass very versital do heavy metal surprisingly well also
Do you prefer it with the floyd rose or traditional whammy set up?
Ñisssssssssce 🎸
Keep on keeping on!
nice intro on brand new start(alter bridge) 10:33
Hey what tool do I use to increase the height of the individual strings. I tried a small allan wrench but maybe I didn't go small enough? Would love some help here.
It is an allan key you need, but I couldn't tell you which size.
@@CameronCooper thx
Hey Cameron, amazing videos man.. I'm torn down between this and the HSH version.. I know it comes down to personal preferences in the end.. but between the two which one you like the most?
The HSH
great playing man! How's the tuning stabillity on this one? I heard complaints about the other models but I really want one :(
Same question here!
Superb demo as usual Cam
Thanks Ross!!
I have this exact guitar but I’m still looking up videos of it 😂 crazy good
I'm a blues, Jazz, Neo Soul and R&B Player and I might just have to snag one... That burgundy mist color has "making love" written all over it
Same!!😂😂
Played one today great!!!
Does this guitar work well with metal of the heavier variety, i.e. Death or Thrash?
