Hi, Adam! Your videos are always very useful! Thank you! I have a request for you: Could you please explain us how and when to use properly the relative pronouns (which, who, that...)? Because, for example in Spanish, we have "que" with this function and sometimes it's a little bit difficult to choose which one to use in compound sentences in English, specially between "which" and "that". Greetings from Paraguay!
You can use "which" when you are referring to things: nouns or objects, for example: the car which I bought is limited edition. "Who" is used to refer to people: Singular or plural. For example: he is the man who I told you about or, these are the men who I told you about. and "that" is used for people and things when you want to express what in spanish means "que". Some examples: this is the house that remembers my childhood or, this is the woman that remembers my mother. I hope you get it by these examples!
A native here, from what I know (I am not an expert or an English teacher!), you use 'which' as a secondary clause in a sentence. It is an addition to the original point but not important: 'the car, which was blue, drove at a super speed'. 'That' is used when it is an important point for the sentence: 'the blue car drove so fast that it crashed into a wall'. In this case 'that' is an important link to the main clause. I hope that helps. 'Which' will often be separated by a comma; 'that' will not.
I followed this lesson with a great interest. When we use phrasal verbs we are really feeling to speak English we can say" the telephon continues to scream "but "the telephon keeps on screaming" sound really better. Thank you very much for these lessons.
