- Games Workshop featured on TV in 1984. Oldhammer at its finest! A must watch for every Oldhammer fan! Games Workshop appeared on TV in 1984. The TV feature was presented by the legendary author and comedian Ben Elton. Elton introduces gaming then goes on to play Dungeons and Dragons with Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson.
Elton films sequences in the Games Workshop first store in London and interviews staff and customers. Incredibly you can see original artwork on the walls of Livingstone's office!
We have digitally enhanced and increased the video resolution but there are obvious limitations.
At least I got to appear on TV once in my life because of this, though I was mocked by Ben Elton
*breathes* we've checked your YT join date! Is that really you?
Frothlord! 🤓
I know, it seemed like the reporter went to find someone to ask them about their characters and experience with the game before immediately acting like they actually didn't just ask them as if they were a frother who just randomly came up to them spouting information.
the legend hisself
Holy shit, you’re Tarry Higgins!
You know you're in the right shop when you can ask a assistant "Have you got any severed heads?" And they reply "We've got Human or Goblin ones"
Yep lol Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment :)
@@Psytrome "Sorry, we've only got three, is that alright?" I guess the mega rats were a hot-ticket item back in the day lol
I think it's a rule that the RPG enthusiasts of the Eighties had to be really really bad at describing what RPGs are. It's probably a large reason why it took so long to take off.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment it much appreciated :)
To be fair the U.S. led the way in RPGs at the outset. Also I think that Ian Livingstone that was doing most of the selling was more of a game designer than salesman and also he didn't design D&D, GW were luck to have landed exclusive UK distribution rights for D&D during the early days.
It took so long to take off because it took so long for the kids that used to play to grow up into adults that controlled what is seen and heard on TV and Movies.
TBH that's partially because TSR hardly knew what it was. Apparently there were discussions among GMs at the time where they expressed frustration at some players choosing to not solve a puzzle because their character's intelligence was too low. Some GMs felt they weren't playing the game propely, not quite getting that their players had realized the real power of RPGs before they had.
(I like that old-school puzzle dungeon, psuedo board game style of play too. But it took a long time for nerds to universally realize how much more they could do with it.)
Gygax and friends had their tournament dungeons and open tables where they might have six parties running around (in different sessions), all rushing through the world to get as much loot as possible and potentially yank it from each other (hence castle and dungeon building rules).
Meanwhile some more isolated groups played... more like people play now. There was a ton of variety in how people interpreted what D&D "was".
@@colbyboucher6391 Don't forget that Warhammer 40k started with more RPG likr roles as well in the beginning.
In 1984, I had been playing D&D for 4 years already and lugging my rule books from one duty station to the next while teaching my room mates how to play on those long watches in the barracks on the week ends. It was great back then when D&D was some kind of secret mystery world that you only shared with your geek friends.
Thank you for sharing your memory and taking the time to watch and comment, it’s much appreciated :)
the hidden mysteries that went on behind the screen is what drew me in lol
Ben Elton: "They'll sell 40,000 this year."
Rick Priestley: *takes notes*
Thanks for cleaning this up - the only copy I have of this is a digital copy from an old VHS!! While I love the memories this brings back, I can't help but fixate on the fact that I should have bought a bigger shirt. That was not an appealing look. 😀
This is pure super geeky, and completely wonderful.
It’s fantastic isn’t it 😀 thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, it very appreciated:)
That place was nerd nirvana seriously the games we had lol they were really nice i used there big landscaped table for a huge game me some dude from Lincoln that was a very special place indeed now its historic well I mean its gone now I think the last times i was there in any capacity was 08
The metal minis that Ian introduced at the beginning, I'd wager that no D&D minis in the entire world were painted to that quality at the time. A vision of things to come!
* pan over to Mike McVey painting as fast as he can to get'em ready for their closeup *
That poor guy being mocked by Elton at the end, Ruthless lol
lol Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment it's much appreciated :)
Amazed to see he has punchlines other than 'lol, Thatcher, amirite?'
😂
@Hans Otterson well and truly!
"And can I have some severed heads?"
Same feelings, brother. Same feelings.
lol Human or Goblin?
*thoughtful pause
human please...
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment its most appreciated :)
Now we can say "I need to print some severed human heads".
Just as a young lad and his mum come in "See, mum, we're all really normal kids..."
I thought we were getting into a monty python sketch there...
Wow, look how nice and relaxed Games Workshop was back then. A solid little hobby company that sells quality products for fantasy role-players.
Hardly recognisable today when I think of the company headquarters and the many lawsuits over IP and licences.
The same thing to some extent would happen with the majority of companies that go from small independent affairs to multi national billion pound corporations. In that process they inevitably lose their ability to do whatever they want as the bosses are not technically in charge anymore, the shareholders are and shareholders want profits and sustained profits every quarter. If they don't get that then you start getting votes of no confidence in the management and so that ends up seeing the management doing whatever they can to keep shareholders happy.
Some corporations can manage to keep all the customers happy, but it sadly tends to be rare.
We want the old GW back
That would be amazing
This brought a tear to my eyes. Thinks changed so much since does times. I miss the old feeling of adventuring down a dungeon. A wasted life.
Holy shit! Jervis Johnson, Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson playing D&D :)
It’s insane isn’t it! Lol thanks fir watching and taking the time to comment :)
Jarvis Johnson had a famous dad too , Richard ! In the best ghost film ever made - the Haunting !

@@ianrobertson4398 Imagine the stories after a few pints?
I wish that original GW store was still there as a museum at least.
This video got me interested in gaming. I never thought I would see it ever again or in colour, as I saw it the first time on a B&W 12" portable TV.
I'm so glad we could help :) Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment :)
This was awesome and so nostalgic for me. I spent many hours during my formative years in a hobby shop playing RPG’s with friends. Thank you for posting this video!
RIP Albie... Where ever you are mate, I hope you're rolling dice and having fun!!
precious. thanks

@@OriginalOldhammerArtwork no problem any time :)
The day before blister packs. It was all different in my day when I worked at Games Workshop Meadowhall in the late 90s.
It just a lovely insight into a past time. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, its greatly appreciated :)
Meadowhall workshop was my local in the late 90s. What was that campaign against the nids that decided the fate of a world?
Fedaykin Commando Ichar 4 I think. Overseen by the Ultramarine with the Blood Angels and the Imperial Guard and the fairly new Sisters of Battle with help from the Eldar. It was a world wide campaign with an imperial victory, obviously.
It was a great reminder of a past time. Thanks.
"we call em frothers" , ill have some rats and skulls...
lol it great isn't it :) Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment it's much appreciated :)
We had one customer who was obsessed with the "Monstermark" system from early White Dwarfs (a system for balancing encounters). He would trap us at the till every time he came in. Imagine someone talking about a spreadsheet for an hour... Nightmare.
That red box of basic dungeons and dragons right at the start. I had that.
Now I still prefer basic to all later incarnations - no need for ridiculously long lists of special powers - if you want to do anything fancy just let the DM make up the criteria, then roll and hope the dice are on your side.
I almost exploded when i saw it.... I personally couldn't agree with you more :) thank you for taking the time to watch anc comment is really appreciated
Thanks. Sort of miss those golden days.
🤗
I worked with Steve for a few years in the early 2000's and have met Ian a couple of times, but never seen videos of them from this era, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment it's much appreciated. Its fantastic isn't it! the store itself was just how I remembered it and so many wonderful rule sets :)
Fantastic find!
I think so too!
Awesome! Overwhelming nostalgia! I was 12 when that was made, listening to The Jam, Madness and the Eurythmics 😂
I'm still frothing lol
Personally I love frothers, they're so invested in the hobby and always enjoying themselves! I remember I went to my local GW and this guy ended up telling me about an old White Dwarf mag that had rules for a 40K void-shield generator. This other guy had just started a Space Wolves army and was telling me about one of the OP Space Wolves characters (of which there are many in the codex, lol).
Wow, proper old school D&D, quality, i started playing around the 1978'ish, give or take and watching this 'dont half take me back, mate' meny thanks for a quality bit of nostalgia
Our pleasure :) Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment
Absolutely amazing! Seeing the second generation of modern roleplaying so to speak. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great Video. It has been so long, I forgot what those days were like. If only I had the money I have now. Of course, back then, it was food, movies (no vcr's or dvd's), gas and D&D. Good Times!

Ben Elton and early roleplaying...could this be any more 80's
Only if Thatcher put in an appearance lol Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment :)
Back in 84 in a small shop in Kingston-Upon -Thames we found D&D..... My friend Mark was an artist and created a cover or two of White Dwarf 67 & 69
WTF! I had no idea Steve Jackson was a cofounder of Games Workshop! *mind explodes*
There are 2 game designers called Steve Jackson. The UK one in the video and went in to write Fighting fantasy books. The other Steve Jackson is American and created Car Wars and tithes games. Both Steve’s worked on a FF book! Know that was confusing!
Aaaah! OK that makes sense. Thanks for clearing it up.
*goes to pick up brain bits and shove them back in my head*
Loved the Fighting Fantasy books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone back in the day! Didn't realise they founded Games Workshop!!!!!
I would love to go back to one of those old school hobby shops.

thank you for the trip back in time reminds me of my first GW game released i think not long after that video, Hero Quest me and my mate played it for hours was great fun, and with another mate we played the original space hulk and lastly later on with a 3rd mate me and him got into warhammer 40k 2nd Ed

I was born in 1984 and this was 5 years before HeroQuest.
I’ve still got a few issues of British modelling/wargaming magazines from about 1977/78, when the first metal fantasy figures appeared for sale. They provoked a lot of controversy with historical gamers pronouncing “this is not proper wargaming”. The whole field quickly exploded from there.
I’ll checkout some of the magazines from the era. I’ve researched the fall out with TSR and Ansell but never from the war gamers perspective funnily enough. Thanks the insight and taking the time to watch and comment :)
Oh to have an rpg shop stocked like that one lol. Happy Days.

@@OriginalOldhammerArtwork I worked for GW for a short time, filling in for a sick staff member. Loved it. Was back in the days before they purged the company of non GW products. Good stuff, I have the dungeon tiles they were using in this video still, and many of the early GW D&D miniatures. I still use them.

Funny, they say to forget about using a board when they open the box but then show them sitting at a table using a board....
When they referred to a board I think they meant in the traditional sense. Games like monopoly, chess and, snakes and ladders which have a constant design. I'd argue they are playing a tiles and not a board. Boards and tiles and not a prerequisite to play D&D but they do make it easier for understanding positions. It also makes it more interesting for the TV programme I hope that helps lol
