I respect this film deeply for a number of reasons, but among the reasons why, asides the obvious animation and the score and the themes: it's clear from both interviews and the execution that Del Toro really has a respect for both the book, AND the original Disney film, and he openly admires their creative powers and wants to honor them, but he also truly wants to tell HIS OWN unique story. Not a mocking parody, not a spitting down upon, not a beat by beat copycat, or a bitter 'why can't I be like Disney?' as other adaptations have done. He and Patrick Mcchale KNOW what their work is good at stylistically the most, and what things is meaningful to *THEM*, and consequently, they don't fail at telling the original story even where it is different, because it clearly isn't trying to be that. It is not about telling a marketable story, or whatever is the most known story, or the most funniest or scariest story. It is about simply telling THEIR story, what is personally uniquely significant to their hearts most. That's a philosophy I wish more directors and music artists would take.

This movie needs to win best animated feature. Instead of Disney and Pixar for the umpteenth time.
