  • I'm replacing the vertical siding on my house with Hardie Plank lap siding. Above the two top plates on the gable ends, a 2x4 is nailed on its side to offset and overlap the upper vertical siding from the lower vertical siding. We used two pieces of plywood sheathing to fix the uneven wall surface so the Hardie Plank siding had a smooth transition and would lay flat.

I hate to say it but most young carpenters today would not concern themselves with a 1/16th or 1/32nd deviation but a real craftsman would and does think of these things.
    Good going!!!

Richard, my sister and I appreciate, enjoy and agree with your comments and commentary. Attention to detail and just a little extra time and energy spent usually pays off in the end. ;)

@@frugaldiy1 Howdy sisters, I can't even begin to tell you how many roofs I replaced as a contractor however, what I can tell you is.......NOT ONE OF THEM HAS EVER LEAKED. Yes, a little more attention to detail, a little extra time and energy, and good quality materials makes all the difference in the world. I knew another contractor who had a 10% roof leak failure over a 10 year period and thought that was ok. Granted that's only 10 homes out of a 100 but it's 100 homes out of 1,000. That was not acceptable to me especially when you consider shingles come with a 20, 30 or 40 year warranty. Now, with that being said, my roofs were more expensive than my half assed competition but I never felt my profit margin suffered as a result besides I never had to hide from a customer when shopping at the mall................lol

I'd expect nothing less from you, Richard. I take you to be a stand-up guy. I'm with you on this--do the absolute best job you can whether working on your own stuff or someone else's. It's important to take pride in your work and be true to your word. I loathe opportunistic, lowlife contractors who take advantage of unsuspecting folks. They make my blood boil. ;)

“1) We’re old and it’s too heavy for us.” … I felt this in my soul 😅😅. I’m learning so much already from this channel. Love it!

Thank you, Rita, for your thoughtful words. They mean a lot to me (and sister)--truly. We're both seniors and still pushing on and DIYing. DIYing is in our DNA, from our dear mother. I know some day I'll have to tone it down and slow down, but that's years off. They're gonna have to pry our tools from our cold, dead hands. ;)
