- What an incredible race! Helvellyn Triathlon was epic, with a swim in Ullswater, bike course which included the Struggle, and finally a run up Helvellyn to finish. Super happy to finish 8th overall, as I really wasn't confident with my fitness going into the race. Ended up about 16 minutes back from Alistair Brownlee who won the race, even with racing in Hamburg ITU finals the day before!

95th for myself, 4th time I've done it. Always a killer! Good to see you've got 1770M on the swim, supposed to have been 1500, but I know by my swim time that was way further than it should have been! Great performance, you must be very pleased with that result!
Tough but so good! Yeah the gps can be off sometimes, so take that with a pinch of salt- but still definitely long. Happy with how I felt more than the result- thats just a byproduct of going well. How was your race vs. the other times you've done it? Better with experience?
@@willcowen2152 thanks for the reply and yes, best time so far! Changed my casette this year, had a triple chainset 30/39/50 and on the rear only went to 28, of which last year was knackered, so stuck in 26 at back, legs were crippled trying to stomp up the mountain after that! I've got a 30 on now, so much easier up the inclines. Every year has been different though!

Will, did you manage to get a place at Outlaw X? I can't get a place. Need 6% of winning time, was 6.75%. Ali was just too good.
I don't know what the gig is with the waves- I don't think I'm in the pro wave though. Yeah, trickier to meet the standards when he's there!
Well done, Helvellyn was my 2nd ever triathlon in 2018, I was the last official finisher in 8.5 hours but 3 people didn't finish and one was disqualified, so I can sorta say I wasn't last. Horrible weather when I did it too, the year before was bright sunshine. I did it in Saloman Trail shoes and tbh I wish I had worn something lighter...but admittedly I didn't do all that much 'running' on the run course.
Lanterne rouge award! I feel like the weather being horrible adds to the reputation of this race- seems unlikely to have a completely sunny day for it. My main issue with the shoes I was using was that they didn't hold my feet well enough on the descent- ended up with some very bruised and blistered toes! Would you do the race again?
@@willcowen2152 I did the run with the back-marker marshal, I remember asking him if I pushed him down would he ban me from ever doing it again :) Actually took me about 2 days before I convinced myself that I enjoyed it! Fully intend to do it again, but first I want to do some long ones. Booked Lakesman iron distance for this year, but got cancelled with Covid, now next year. Barcelona ironman is on the wish-list, but yeah, when I can fit it in, I'll be doing Helvellyn again. tbh triathlon was a silly sport to take up at 58
@@deanb61 Barcelona is a bit of a contrast to those other races! It would have been more silly if you didn't take it up I'd say 😉
@@willcowen2152 Was advised that Barcelona is a good one for a beginner as it's flat...compared to Wales or Bolton. I was going to do Lakesman this year then Barcelona next for my 60th...all screwed up now with Covid.
Very well done Will and an astonishing hellish course and weather. Typical race day and sunshine comes out after we have all finished! Any more races this year?
The most British weather ey 🤷♂ Maybe a few running races after a bit of a break now.

Will Cowen haha both! Genuinely very impressive mate, I don’t think any of us who weren’t there can appreciate how tough the conditions are. The only other amateur ahead of you is very experienced on this course

Great performance. I didn’t understand the comment on shoes at the end of this video. Which ones you used? Cloud or Cloudventure? Thanks.
I was using the cloudventure waterproofs, but where I started the run in wet socks thanks to the run through transition, they did rub quite a bit!

@@willcowen2152 I did all their Triathlons, Rippon, Redcar (both sprint), then Helvallyn. Actually I don't think Trihard do the Rippon one any more. The Redcar one is good fun though, a sea swim and closed roads for the bike and run.
Great Vid, thats deffo on my radar for next year. I did the Slateman legend last year at Snowden so if you're looking for similar venues, check it out! It was amazing.
100% recommended if you like an interesting and challenging course. I think I might look into that race next year, looks like another epic venue.
