    I liked the love story in 1864. It ( Love) reminds us of our humanity when all hope seems lost and when we're on the verge of losing our compassion and our consciences. As the series says ' In Love, there is Hope'. All historical war films and series should have these love stories and friendships along the way to remind us that we're not monsters. That we are all one.

    THis series is well close to the events from what I have read and no I haven't just read Wikipedia but a couple of History books that cover the 1864 war with Denmark & Prussia/ Austrian Alliance.
    Denmark waas mad to take on Prussia & Austria. She believed that she would be assisted by GB and others (Scandinavia) yet the assistance did not materialize and she got a flogging by the Krauts. Poor little Denmark.
    THe Series shows what it was like to be in 19 Century battle better than any other film I have seen. The bombardment and action scenes are fantastic. The Character are well developed; The Soldiers; Generals on both sides ; Denmark's De Mesa practical knew he was up against a up and coming European power; Austro- Germ,an Alliance what army had a chance? And he knew so to be C in C of the lesser side was a poison chalice. The scene's didnt get to show his eccentricities but you got the juist of what he was up against. The German Field Marshall Wrangel was fighting Napoleon 50 years before in his head and kept being corrected by his subordinates; that was funny . While he was mismanaging the Prussian Army the Dane's had a chance, slim but they could draw the Prussians away from supply lines and closer to the coast where the Danes had a bloody good navy...This is from my reading... But he was replaced. The actor played this brilliantly ...his lines where lectured his men about Napoleon were hilarious as Napoleon was dead by then and his grant nephew was near to [power.
    I could keep going for ages but the critic of this series really need to pull their collective heads in as Battle scene are so authentic that they are breath taking. I have not been so impressed since saving Private Ryan.. Any other war film nut would be too.

    A fascinating series about the 19th century Denmark and its confrontation with German unification under Otto Von Bismarck.
    The second Schlesswig Holstein War was a disaster for Denmark.
    Prussia and Austria jointly attacked Denmark. A much more powerful Prussia led by Otto Von Bismarck
    The first war 1848-1851 was won thanks to Russian, British and French threats of intervention
    The Russians were miffed by the 1853 Crimean war and would refuse to cooperate with Britain.
    Britain did not have the manpower to intervene, plus the British economy was hurting from the US blockade on the Confederacy in the American Civil War
    Also Britain was of the opinion that Denmark violated the 1851 peace agreement by including Holstein in it's new constitution

    • @agffans5725
      @agffans5725 6 років тому +1

      Hello from Denmark ... The war was a kind of rematch of the first Danish- Prussian war (1848-51) that Denmark had won ... though the interesting part about the war in 1864 between Denmark and Prussia + Austria is no so much the effect it had on Denmark, that lost Schleswig-Holstein, but that the Prussian victory pretty much gave birth to Germany as we know it ... unfortunately, little to nothing has been written about the 1864 war in English ... except for this book : '1864: The forgotten war that shaped modern Europe' by the historian Tom Buk-Swienty .... the "forgotten" war between Prussia and Denmark was the first of the so-called 'three unification wars' ... the other two being the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 (after the following dispute between Prussia and Austria over Schleswig-Holstein)... and the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, which gave final birth to modern Germany.
      So in other words, Otto von Bismarck was able to use the euphoria created by the victory against Denmark in 1864 to push his agenda for a unified German state which had failed in the past ... so it was not the purpose of the war ... but the result of the 1864 war both became the opportunity and excuse to push on, leading directly to the "Blitzkrieg" of 1866 against Austria and then to the war of 1870 and unification of Germany in 1871....
      The "father" of the Danish constitution Ditlev Gothard Monrad and the other Danish politicians seemed sure Denmark could beat Prussia + Austria at the legendary fortifications Danevirke in Schleswig-Holstein ... Danevirke was build sometime before 500 AD and was then later expanded multiple times during the Viking Age and further on ... and had served Denmark well up until the 1864 war, so it was as much a legendary national symbol as it was a fortification ... but the Danish General Christian de Meza, who was to be in charge of the Danish battle plans, perfectly knew that the Prussians and Austrians had more men, much better artillery ... Denmark on the other hand were far superior at sea ... so knowing that his men were facing certain defeat and a pointless loss of life, if they were to fight at Danevirke, he withdrew to Dybbøl to a much better defendable position, where the Danish navy would be out of reach for the Germans, but able to kill off the otherwise superior German artillery, to help the troops on the ground .. so he had it all planned and lined up ... but the withdrawal from Danevirke resulted in an outraged cabinet that promptly relieved De Meza of his command and then replaced him with a "puppet" general who totally withdrew the navy (that btw easily won the few naval battles of this war) and then set up a hopeless defense at Danevirke, to please the government... and so the war was lost before it actually started ...

      But to return to the further implications of the 1864 war, from a larger European perspective ... then the 1864 war would also have great future impact on the relationship between the 3 cousins who reigned over Europe's greatest powers, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and King George V of Britain, before WW1 .... because before the 1864 war the two Danish sisters, Princess Alexandra and Princess Dagmar of Denmark, had married the heirs to both the British and Russian thrones. But following the invasion of Denmark by Prussia in 1864, the two sisters became the core of an anti-Prussian coalition that prefigured the great anti-German alliance of 1914.
      In the past, England and Russia had been the traditional enemies, while the English Royalty had close ties to the Germans ... but their two sons, King George V and Tsar Nicholas II became very close friends during the many summer holidays they took, along with other royals, at the king of Denmark’s holiday home outside Copenhagen. However, because of the Danish sisters hostility towards Prussia, Wilhelm was never invited and eventually Germany became the enemy of England and Russia .... This series is as embarassing as the actual defeat. Story line is ridiculus, everyone is overacting (despite being excellent actors in other productions), the political background has been simplified to a level that even G, W. Bush Jr. could understand. It hurts to watch this trailer again, but I am researching before writing a parody of the series. The music is good, though.

    Bad for Denmark and possibly could've bern avoided, had those in power there known the real deal down south prior to hostilities. A big loss in land and life relatively for a "small" nation. But if those who participated wanted to see something much worse, all they had to do is sail across the Atlantic at that time. (Latest estimates at 850,00 died of combat and disease.) Not to minimalize what some might call, to use the warped phrase "a splendid little war."

      The German Confederation wasn't involved. In fact, it was against the war, but Prussia and Austria gave them the finger and marched anyway. Bavaria and Saxony prohibited Austria from moving troops through their territory, so they had to march through Silesia. That's one of the aspects the series got wrong.

    if only they took out the supernatual elements and less focus on the parallel present day history line, it would have been great.

    The series is just danish propaganda, to make the Danes feel good about themselves and forget how they collaborated with the Nazis.. The Danes lost 3 times as many losses then the Prussians in the war, this series is fast and loose with the facts. Prussians had breech loading rifles and the Danes had muskets. Also Austria also attacked the Danes, yet we never see them. The battle of Mysunde was a minor skirmish with very low casualties, yet this series makes it a great battle. The only positive is it is nice to see the uniforms and equipment.

    • @georgeeverette3912
      @georgeeverette3912 5 років тому

      Right, during the cold war the Danish Army planned to mobilize in 6 weeks, but the Russians would overrun it in 4 and release the Russian Baltic fleet to attack American reinforcements. This is because the Danes had the same plan for defense as they had in 1939. Let their palace guard army fight a holding action long enough for the elites to escape with their disposable wealth and then surrender on about day 3. By then the Soviet Airborne and Marines would on the ground and the Armor spearheads would have been crossing the Danish border with almost nothing in front of them.

    • @ohauss
      @ohauss 5 років тому +2

      You clearly didn't understand the series if you believe it's "Danish propaganda to make the Danes feel good about themselves". If anything, it was a harsh criticism of Danish politicians and nationalism.
