    I’ve owned a LOT of motorcycles in the last 20 years. Including two Vstrom 650s and one 1000. The 650 is one of my favorite motorcycles. I traded my first 650 in on a 17 Africa twin. That was a huge mistake. I can’t think of many bikes I’ve enjoyed more than my vstroms.

    This is likely the most thoughtfully explained reviews of the Vstrom 650 I've watched. And I think I've watched most of them. I bought my '15 Vstrom 650 5 years ago as my first ever motorcycle at the ripe age of 47. 5 seasons and 17K miles later I cannot agree more with your views - they are spot on and fair. Needless to say it's been not only a great bike to learn on but also one that has allowed me to continue to advance my skills, confidence and adventures. It's a pleasure to ride whether I'm on my favorite early morning 50 mile loop or escaping on a multi-state multi-day trip. I can easily say it's the best bike I've ever owned. 🤣

    I run the same bike (gen2). Very reliable and smooth commuter. I have taken it across states and when I sit on it a long time I always want to kick my legs out. That will be my next add-on if I find a suitable contraption for front-forward pegs. But for running around and enjoying summer its incredible for its repeatability. Always makes me smile.

    The buffeting is one of those gremlins that people have been trying to sort out for years. Change the mirrors. Add deflectors to the crash bars. Bigger shield. Smaller shield. No shield. Madstad multi-position shield. I tried pretty much everything except the lower deflectors (some day), but I did finally fix the buffeting. Basically, I went back to the stock shield, which for the gen 1 is pretty low and doesn't adjust, and then just added a cheap Chinese import $30 multi-position spoiler attached to it. At the highest position of the spoiler, it sends the airstream right over my helmet, but leaves enough gap between itself and the main shield that a fair bit of air flows between, so there's no low pressure zone created and far less turbulence. It looks kind of silly. But it works great, especially for warm weather riding. I also have a tall Cee-Baily (look through) shield that I can quickly swap in for the colder/wet weather, and again, the spoiler works wonders with that too 😎

    The engine on these bikes is a gem. I owned a Gen 1 2006 V-strom 650 and loved it. I've also owned two SV650's, a naked and a faired model. Suzuki really got it right with this little v-twin. Everything you said rings true, I sold my Strom back in 2012 after 6 years of ownership but I remember it well, a fantastic all-rounder that will just keep going. Mine never missed a beat during my ownership, I did not have a single issue with it. I am in the market for a bike again and have been looking at used versions of these, so may end up with one again.

    I have a 2012 650 vstrom, and I saw alot of videos saying exactly what he is saying about this bike. That's why I got one! It's not great at anything, but it's very good at everything. Not too exciting, and reliably boring descriptions were too subjective for me to pass on this bike. It's the best overall bike I've ever had and I enjoy riding it every time I get on it. Everyone I meet that had a Vstrom regrets getting rid of it. I hear the same thing in these videos. If I ever got rid of it, it would be to get a new one.

    My 2013 V-Strom 650, which I purchased after deciding I wanted to stop chasing tech and power, is fantastic. I’ll stop for fuel at 400km and, doing the math, could probably hit 500.(my nerves won’t let me go there…)
    You’re right about the riding manner, it likes to sit at 3500 to 4000rpm in 6th which I find about 90 kph. My only gripe is at 4500 to 5000 rpm there’s significant vibes at the pegs and grips. This could be the crash bars transmitting the engine vibes through the frame, I don’t know. But it means you have to go faster to clear the threshold (or slower if that’s an option.) And that exhaust note through 6000 and up just entices spirited riding. Without putting you at crazy death wish speed! What a great bike.

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  3 роки тому +1

      I think if a lot of riders stopped reading about what they shouid ride, and instead, like you, stopped chasing tech and insane power, they'd actually be happier (and wealthier). Image has a lot to account for. You could be right about the crash bars, i don't remember that on mine (back in 2013+ which didn't have crash bars. The one I rode for a couple days didn't suffer either, so you could be onto something. Cheers.

    Great review. I have a 2018 model, bought in 2019 with the "Adventure Pack" including crash bars, side boxes. I have ridden 15,000 kms (on the same roads as you have shown) and am very pleased with the bike. When I bought it, I had a "higher high seat" added, and lower pegs. I am 6' 2", with 33" inside leg. The changes made all the difference, as I found when riding the same model while mine was being serviced. (My friend watched me riding the loaner and said, "you just looked awkward" - the lower seat and higher pegs did not suit me!)
    So, if you are taller, or shorter, there is a range available for adjusting. Once adjusted, I loved the bike. Otherwise, all is as you have said. Thank you.

    Great review! I have a 2017 (new model) and I love it. Enough power, handles very well, very capable and I'm quite happy with all of it. You mentioned mpg... Riding at 454 mph on our county roads in SW Colorado, I have done several tanks at 60+mpg. Not that good if I'm "playing" with the throttle. Surprising passing power and totally predictable. At 6'3" and 215 lbs. I did lower the pegs 1 inch and put 2" Rox pivoting bar risers. Added a Sit&Fly seat cover and a Givi adjustable wind screen and Givi luggage. Hard to imagine a more pleasant ADV bike for pavement and dirt roads. Thanks for a great video!

      There is a lot of media inspired hyperbole out there. When that is ripped away from the discussions on motorbikes, this is absolutely one of the best bikes. It's not glamorous, expensive or the most capable, but it does everything very well, is bullet proof and reliable, and is friendly unlike any other bike I can think of in its range. Cheers.

    I love mine for touring on two lane roads. Mine is a 2017. If it had a bit more edge coming out of tight corners in 2nd and third, I'd like that, but would also be going faster, and really when touring it is about just being smooth that gives me pleasure. It has a very reasuring idle too. All the bike I need. The only off road I'd bother with is a dirt or gravel road. It does fine on that.

    Great and fair review, I agree with everything you said, the only thing you could added is that not only it does not break, but if it does, parts are quite cheap, in my experience, and normal servicing is cheap too.

    I agree with everything you said. Spot on. I love my current 650 and feel it is a little bit better than the gen 2. I’m seeing average mileage ranges of over 500 Kms per tank. Would I prefer the 1000. Or 1050 now. Absolutely. But for the money and insurance costs here in Ontario I’ll stick with the 650. But there is no replacement for displacement. I absolutely also recommend the 650. Love it.

      Yes, I rode the gen 2 around for a couple of days and really enjoyed it. Solo, and with a few tweaks (screen), there's really no difference on back roads to the 1000; it's only when you get to higher speeds and more load that the 1000 sparkles more brightly. Cheers.

    I've just found this revisit review. I'm in the UK and have a 2015 VStrom 650 which looks very similar to the one in the video. Last year I did just over 5,000 miles on mine including a 2,000 seven day tour up the tip of Scotland and home to the South West again, almost none of it on the motorways (highways). My bike has the GIVI Aeroflow screen which I would recommend getting. I also have a fork brace which helps with the tendency to follow tram lines on the bl**dy awful gravel 'top dressed' roads we have in places in the UK, also a front fender extender which just helps keep a little of the front wheel dirt away from the bash guard / exhaust. One major tip, especially for new riders, make sure your front tyre is in perfect condition. I had Battlax A40's on when I bought the bike (with 24,000 miles on), they had plenty of tread but had worn asymmetrically and made the front end twitchy and unpredictable. It took me a quite few miles to work out what the issue was, but with a new set of rubber on the issue was resolved. Tyre pressure too can make a big difference to the feel of the bike. The DL650 is a wonderful bike and I have another busy touring year planned for 2022.

      Thanks for the comments. I just purchased a 2013 pretty much identical to the one reviewed and the 1,200 mile ride home from California to Colorado was not bad. Two things I wondered about was the front felt less stable than I would like with a slight wobble occasionally, which could be the 70/30 tires. And the idea of some sort of cruise, that is a looong time to hold the throttle without being able to rest that hand!

    • @neilmackinnon3371
      @neilmackinnon3371 2 роки тому +1

      @@stevemoon9808 Unstable front end is almost certainly tyres (tires). Mine had some Bridgstone Battlaxe's fitted and the front was pretty scary. A change to Avon Spirit ST and it was an entirely different bike. Prior to the tyre change I also fitted a fork brace which also helped.

    Hi BMR, I’ve been following your channel for some time now, and it’s just because I’ve bought a 2022 v Strom 650, that this review popped up again, thought I’d comment on it as I’ve owned both 1000 and 1050. Excellent review by the way. I would agree, the big bike is probably the best for touring etc, but there is something about the 650, I can’t put my finger on it, but it feels sweeter, lighter, and IMO steers better. Each to their own, and I haven’t mentioned fuel efficiency, but I don’t feel short changed with the 650. Maybe I’m getting old, 61, but believe this or not, I traded in a Ducati V2’s for the 650, great bike, some people might think that’s crazy, but I still don’t feel short changed. Keep up the good work, I even enjoy your Moto Guzzi reviews 👍

      I asked them about the bikes and they said that they both had 650’s and traded them in for the 1000 .
      They both agreed that they thought the 650 was a better bike and were sorry they changed to the 1000.
      I love my 650, it is the perfect bike from for me. I purchased it new in April 2018 (a 2017 model) and have done nearly 55,000 trouble free km. I am 80 next March and I hope to keep riding her for a few years yet.
      I guess when I can’t pick it up on my own I might have to get a lighter bike or give up. The last time I dropped it in my driveway was two years ago, I picked it up ok then, and I think I still can.

    I bought the 2014 V-Strom 650 with 69 hp as my very first bike, still not done with my license, but I've tried it (legally) and I'm happy with it. the driving school got the SV650 with a more powerful tuning of 95 hp, but I simply can't say I like it, as it's so low that it's uncomfortable over time. same engine, different tunings, and different style of bike, still, the V-Strom is the clear winner for me
    getting a license takes time in Norway, or Europe in general, compared to the US, where it seems to be just about a test, and bare minimum stuff to learn. we're at least allowed to train legally on public roads here, with either an instructor, or someone who had their license for 5+ years, and they're at least 25 y/o, so I've trained both with the school/instructor, and family

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  5 місяців тому

      Great to hear you're getting your license. The UK is similar to Norway - probably for the best. Here in Canada, you can jump on any bike (yes a Ducati V4S/BMWs1000RR/Kawasaki H2R) and take a round the cones parking lot test. Then you ride for a few weeks with a friend with experience (full license), then take a short road test. Then you are considered a motorcycle rider. It's like putting a kid in canon, shooting them out, and expecting them to fly safely. Yes, agree, while the SV and Vstom share the same motor, they are quite different.

I just need a small tank bag for easily accessible stuff, like credit cards and I'm good
      btw, the US and Norway might have similarities for the test, but we have to do hours of training with an instructor, going thru 3 levels of skill mastering, incl. a 3 hour session on a track for experience, a 6 hour session with an instructor on public roads as a "long trip" experience, and so on. in total, we have to pay about $3k for our license
      also, we have 3 levels of the license. A1 for 125cc and max 11 kW power, A2 for 35 kW power and max power of 0,2 kW/kg weight of the bike, and A, which is no restriction
      each level has age restrictions as well, so A1 is 16 y/o, A2 is 18 y/o, and A is a little more complicated, because it is 24 y/o, but we can "upgrade" from A2 after 2 years to A as well, meaning someone who got their A2 when they turned 18, they can upgrade to A when they're turning 20, but as far as I remember, they have to be 21 y/o to actually be fully unrestricted

    I bought a new 2015 DL650 XT, the first ever new machine in over fifty years of motorcycling, having only bought good secondhand bikes, apart from The first horror a 1954 125 BSA Bantam bought n 1962 it was a dog, bought for a five sold a couple of months later for thirty bob.
    Love the V-Strom, however top milage this old git can handle riding it in a day is about two hundred miles, even this will set my rear end on fire. My goto bike is my Kawasaki GT550, riding this machine is really armchair riding to me, with it Air suspension , I have clocked uo over 400 miles on a day round my part of Scotland with no ill effects whatsoever other than the pain of its MPG, which is no where near the DL650 XT, I have recorded 74 MPG on the computer, its only clocked up 6000 miles being so uncomfortable to ride. However you description of its handling is very accurate. No doubt it will become someone 'barn find' along with all my other classic Motorcycles one day..

      Slow? 70bhp? Z900 in its hey day the fastest bike power to weight was same as the 650. My honda cb750k7 was 70ish hp. I cannot ride my 21 plate 650 flat out on road.I live in uk. It will cruise 90mph 6500rpm. In 3rd it will do 30-90 very strong torque curve. Agreed in a straight line or track it’s down on power but for road riding it’s my favourite bike out of the 44 I’ve owned. Mine does 70mpg when being caned. My favourite is the suspension on bumpy roads. Wheels never leave ground so much better than hyper bikes I’ve owned at least on uk shitty roads

    • @TheNCcope
      @TheNCcope 10 місяців тому

      @volt8684 sorry for the late reply, I live in America and it is underpowered on the freeway and I am constantly looking for 7th gear. I get around 35mpg doing 90mph on the highway.
      63hp used to be good for bikes but nowadays with many cars having at least 200hp now and the electric cars like telsa it is absolutely underpowered. You will probably beat most gasoline cars off the line but they will pass you eventually as they have a higher top speed. And electric cars will beat this bike at all speeds, which is a safety issue for me since i use acceleration as a defensive riding technique

    Spectacular review! Ya, I’m all in on the V-Strom. Question; I’m around 6’4” and 240lbs. Would I fit this bike comfortably? I do like lower bikes and being flat footed at stops and in the dirt. I sat on a Kawasaki KLR and even being tall, I didn’t like the height.

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  Рік тому +1

      Ordinarily, I might say you were too tall, but given your propensity to avoid taller off road bikes, this may be the bike for you. It's not short by any means, and may suit you perferctly.

    I get 70 mpg on my 20k 2012 model, not the best looking bike but does everything above average. Apparently the V stands for versatile and not the V twin. The turbulence/buffeting seems to be coming from low down and running up your legs/torso causing the helmet buffeting. On the forums there are many who have made some side deflectors which have reduced it considerably. i watched a very interesting video by MCrider who describes in detail the reason for the buffeting.

      650? 1000? I'm pretty sure anything before 2016 in North America is free of Euro 4 (they do have emissions, but not to that level). Moto Guzzi stopped producing the Griso 1200 SE in 2016 as they couldn't make the big 1200 block compatable with the Euro 4 specs.

      The cam is an older Gopro Hero 5 Black running at 2.7/4K 60fps and on the bike a older Hero 5 Session. Still going strong and both capable of high quality footage; however, they lack updated image stabilization compared to the newer models. Conversely, the sound on the older ones is more reliable...Might find some older ones on Amazon (second hand) or Marketplace. Don't pay too much for them - they're up to the Go Pro 10 now...

    I have a GS.... and I'm not an off roader.... if I needed to replace my GS today, I'd go for the V-Strom 1000 with cruise (I had a 2014 V-Strom 1000 before the GS). If cruise was on the 650 that would change things a lot)

    well what if i am between versys tracer and vstrom 650 which do i choose its so hard

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  2 роки тому

      I depends what you want: Tracer is sporty; Vstrom is least sporty but most comfortable and likely better for touring. The Versys is somewhere between. . The tracer is much lighter than both bikes and smaller than the versys. The tracer is very like the mto7 - fun light and flickable, but the suspension lets it down. It's more punchy than both the other bikes, with good torque and better top end. The Versys is more predictable, more neutral, not quite as much fun, but more comfortable and adventure bike like. The vstrom is more comfortable than both, with more torque, but the engine feels anemic compared the Tracer 700. Like the Vstrom would tour better and be more comfortable. For me, it's the tracer. The CP2 engine is a delight. The tracer is cheaper than the versys: use the money saved to get a better aftermarket shock for better damping and you've got a great bike. Hope this helps. Cheers.
