  • In this video we're going over VFR radio communications with Air Traffic Control for flying in and out of Class D airspace. Even though we're based at Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix AZ, we decided to pretend we're just stopping for gas to be consistent with our other videos for flying in and out of Class C and Class B airports.
    Really, class D is where it all starts. It's considered the runt of the towered airports and is usually used for airports that have enough traffic to warrant a tower. BUT that's not always the case. Sometimes the Airspace around the airport can force it to be a Class D, like at Deer Valley. It's the busiest general aviation airport in the US and could EASILY be class C, but the class B above it wont let it. Just some food for thought.
    Anyways, enjoy the coms as we fly in and out of the class D airspace of Deer Valley Airport.

    Holy crap was that ATC speaking FAST! 😵 I couldn't understand a word she said. Radio communication is the hardest part of flying, in my experience. I've (politely) asked ATC to slow down, and in a few cases, they responded as if I had asked them to kill their dog or something.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  3 роки тому +1

      Eventually you'll know what they're going to say and you are just verifying key words. And yes, they can talk really fast. LOL It's why I put subtitles in.

    • @ChrisSpil
      @ChrisSpil 2 роки тому +2

      @Jonathan Cutting, I second that! She talks WAY too fast, and there's hardly good enunciation and pausation between her words to make her speech intelligible. I'm a long-time ham radio operator and used to diciphering hard-to-make-out speech, but seriously now, that is unnecessarily too fast to 'register' in the brain.

    Lots of complaints about the ATC comms, but seemed fine to me as a (more advanced?) student. Fast, but i understood all the instructions.
    Even still, if you are a student and struggling, let ATC know! Ask them to repeat and let them know you are a a student. It's nothing to be embarrassed about.
    I asked Center to repeat themselves with every radio call on my first solo XC. It wasn't a problem.
    Edit:
    I fly almost exclusively in Echo. I'm just older, and a veteran, so I have a big chunk of life experience to build off of.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  8 місяців тому

      Yes, let them know. But it's a skill you have to learn. Its like saying "I can play the guitar" without ever picking one up. Yea you can strum it and make some some noise, but you have to practice to get good at it. ATC is the exact same way.

    Anyone who operates out of KDVT should get a gold star or silver wings on their pilot certificate. My Base is Mesa Falcon Field. It is sometimes busy but nothing like the Class Delta equivalent of LAX that Deer Valley often is.

    Why did he instruct you to go to the runup area if you didnt ask to do that? Do all cessnas require engine runup prior to departure?

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  Рік тому +1

      Some airports have runup areas, others do not and you just do it at the end of the runway. All piston engine aircraft do a runup to double check systems and controls. At our airport they will aways send us to the runup area unless we request otherwise.

      R8 is the ramp area where he is currently located. (That’s where the north hangars are) So he called Ground to request taxi to the Runway. Ground responded telling him to taxi to the engine run up area via Alpha. He needed permission before entering taxiway Alpha. Hope this helps!

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  3 роки тому +3

      Romeo 8, or R8 was my location on the airfield. Telling them that allows them to locate me immediately and provide appropriate directions to where I need to go. If you look at an airport diagram you'll see them labeled between parking and taxiways. Here's a link to mine - skyvector.com/files/tpp/2106/pdf/06646AD.PDF
