How to Tie the Oriental Knot (Small Knot) - Necktie Tying

  • The Oriental Knot is also known as the Small Knot, because it's the smallest of all conventional necktie knots--but this little knot has incredible styling potential!
    To begin, wrap the tie around your neck, seam-side up; this is contrary to how most ties are tied.
    Next, let the wide end drape considerably lower than the narrow end. Place the narrow end on top of the wide, and pinch them together.
    Wrap the wide end over and around the crossing point once. Push the wide end through the gap at your neck, with the seam facing away from you.
    Insert the wide end into the knot, bracing with your other hand, and pull it through. If desired, create a dimple by pinching together the fabric inside the knot and pulling on the wide end. Then, tighten the entire knot.
    It is best accentuated by a classic or medium spread collar. The Oriental Knot appears especially elegant when worn with collar jewelry, like a collar bar or pin.

    This was just how I was taught to tie a tie. When you say "this is contrary to how most ties are tied" Even other guys around me tie their ties like this. Maybe I just grew up in a time and area that this was the only way to tie a tie, lol.

      What year were you born in and in what country? I was born in the US in the mid 1970s and I’ve never heard of this before.

      @@littleceasar9351Must be a commonwealth thing. I'm Australian and this is how I tied my ties in school.
      Edit: except I didn't do it seam-side up.

    This knot is best for ties with very thick fabric.

    That'd just a schoolboy knot. That's how literally every child in the UK learns to tie a tie if their school uniform has one.

    Love the tie Raphael! I seem to be loving this particular color combination right now. I would have enjoyed seeing what the knot looked like when finished though. Also, and it is not a reflection on GG at all, but I just don't like collar bars and pins. I like the way they show off a tie, but I always feel like the pins/bars are missing something. You know, that bit of Je ne sais quoi! I am not saying they should have bling, but a more ornate look very tastefully done would be nice I think. Am I making any sense at all here? I hope so! Anyway, it is a beautiful knot! Well done as always Raphael!
    Thank you so much!

    First tie (the red one) looks a bit worn, one tip for removing that excess fabric flaring out is some sharp scissors, keeping it close to the surface.

      It is not worn, it's a shantung tie. That's his normal texture lol.

    What do you do if it causes the tie to be very long? I can’t seem to tie it without the tie being very long.

      My two recommendations are:
      1) Try out the "Four in Hand Knot". It uses more of the fabric for the knot and is super easy to make.
      2) If your tie is generally too long, adjust your thin and wide end of your tie and get the correct length by try and error. Usually the wide end needs to be longer than the thin end.
      Sooner or later you'll find the correct length for you. :) Cheers!

      Welcome to the short guy’s world. LOL!
      I simply choke it up a bit so that the wide end sits at my belt buckle, and slide the thin end through the keeper at the back of the tie and tuck the excess into my waistband. This also removes the need for tie pins and tie bars. 😉

    • @KeyFilmation
      @KeyFilmation 4 місяці тому

      @@kevinong1735thanks. By choking it up, doesn’t the knot get bigger? I really want a tiny knot but that requires using the narrower part of the tie in the knot.

    • @cm01
      @cm01 4 місяці тому

      the fact that you start seam facing out makes it slightly smaller than a four in hand. Try it for yourself, its noticeable on a bulkier tie.

    • @Koresos.
      @Koresos. 10 днів тому

      @@cm01That alone changes nothing. The tie is the same width on both sides. The difference is that the wide side hangs much further down, which is why you logically get a narrower section at the knot. So it works the same with a four in hand. I sometimes do it when I’m wearing a waistcoat, so you don’t see the difference in length at the bottom.
