my mom used to do "pantry cleanout" weeks/months where we didn't shop again until we didn't have anything left. my husband and i still do it to this day and we will use the extra money to apy down debts. it's honestly really humbling and also reassuring to stop and just check yourself and realize that you can do just fine with some beans and rice or a simple pasta dinner.

This is great. I appreciate how you could appreciate what you have on hand, but I would actually advise against cleaning out your pantry till it’s all empty, because you never know if there might be an emergency where you can’t get to stores or stores are closed down. I’m thinking of weather emergencies such as the Texas blackout that left so many freezing cold, starving and thirsty, or local shutdowns. I would suggest you ALWAYS have at least 2-4 weeks of food(or more if you can afford it, or quick ready to eat soups as well as longer term dry goods, like rice, legumes, pasta, jarred sauces with protein just Incas you can’t get fresh meat) ALL the time. You can look up “working pantry” or “ prepper pantry”. You just never want to be left without any food at any time. Don’t forget to keep some gallons of water. 1 gal minimum per person per day. 🙂
Jennifer, I couldn't agree more! Sometimes I tend to over shop or I've grown too much and they got to get used up cut a bad spot out and they're good to go. I also hate wasting food. I grew up poor I went to bed hungry I will be hard pressed before I throw something away. I plan meals around what we have in the house and I try to make sure every bit of it gets used up and I especially try to not overcook because we tend to get bored with leftovers very quickly. But you would not believe how quickly some people throw out a zucchini because it has one little bad spot on it.
I tend to freeze stuff when I notice it going "bad" and I know I won't eat it soon. Even things like zucchini with lots of water (which will get mushy after thawing) are good for soups or sauces, just season and puree it, add some cream or broth and whatever. Also, I take the ugly veggies and single bananas at the supermarket, they still taste the same 😊
Your recipes sound so delicious. Although my days of cooking are behind me, I'd like to offer a suggestion. For the chicken tortilla soup, instead of putting the onion and lime juice directly in the pot, I would saute the onion in the same frying pan that I'd cooked the chicken in, soaking up all that bacony, taco seasony goodness. I'd then deglaze with the lime juice to get up every last bit of flavor. Then add it to the pot. Just an idea.
Molly K. Yup. I am a big proponent of sautéing the aromatics first then deglazing. I also sear any meat I plan to use first, then sauté the aromatics and deglaze, getting all that lovely fond up. The Maillard reaction is the best friend for flavor, lol. I love her frugality, but cringe every time I see her using un sautéd aromatics, lol.
I've started freezing Avocado! I buy them in bulk. Once they're ripe I cut them into quarters, toss them in a freezer bag, add some salt, pepper, and garlic powder, a liberal squirt of lime juice, and then mush by hand! Squash the bag flat and stack in the freezer. They stay green and thaw within 20 minutes. Then we're never without avocados and I don't have to worry about them over ripening.
My mother gave me a box of food when they moved houses, among it was pasta boxes expired 02/2018. We ate some yesterday with sketchy broccoli and frozen ham slices cut up. Quarantine makes you creative!!!
Thank YOU -- for using the zucchini -- and just cutting off the bad! SO many people think that is not good - but I ALWAYS use up what I can just the same way.
For many things that´s fine, but don´t try it with something like bread as the mold can spread though the whole loaf even if you only see it on one slice.

I watched a video on how to store the cabbage and you pick it and you do not wash it and you wrap it super tight in Saran Wrap and store it in your refrigerator inside a ziplock bag after it's been wrapped with the Saran Wrap and I got to tell you you pull the outer leaves off and you're left with a beautiful red cabbage underneath we had about 20 of them we've eaten about 1 a week I gave a couple of them away and I'm about sick of red cabbage to the point I'm not even growing it in this year's Garden. But just wanted to let you know because I know you always like to keep stuff around and you literally can keep it around for you know six months. Unfortunately the green cabbage does not last as long

Hey my mom and I love your channel. Today we were gifted some beautiful tri-colored grape tomatoes and some red bell peppers and we knew would never be able to use them all so....we reached to our inner Christine and said let's freeze it. So we roasted and made a home made tomato sauce to put in the freezer.
You should try mashed potato quesadillas. It is a lot a carbs in one but it’s sooooo good. With cheddar cheese and caramelized onions in them. Mmmmmmmm

Love your attitude to food, your recipes, and your energy. I hate wasting any food and you show so many creative ways to use up what you have in the fridge or pantry. Also like your spicy flavourings.
Hi Christine. Sausages are a bit pricey where I live. So what I did is substituted sausages with burger patties. Yumm! Perhaps you can add a bit of starch like potato flour in to the soup. It looks bit watery but really each to their on liking. Love your frugal food. Thx babe
I am 3 minutes in and I love you... What happens to dry pasta, it gets more dry?!! I died. Found you from Jen's channel and I am so happy to have discovered you. THANK YOU!!
I LOVE THE RECIPE LINKS!!!!! Awesome! I'm a new subscriber (I "found" your channel about two months ago.) Cooking is NOT my strong suit (especially cooking healthfully on a small budget!), but you inspire me to be a better person/wife/mom by all the amazing videos and incredible resources! Thanks so much for sharing.
You should consider a bigger saute pan! I got some money to Kohls for Christmas and got a 5 qt Calphalon saute pan. I can't believe how amazing it is- I could probably cook 3-4 lbs of ground meat with out it spilling over.
I loved the inspiration. I think all of us are needing to get extra creative right now. I'm gonna head over to Jen's channel ;) Love me some Jen. Hailey does a fantastic job with the camera. She has a steady hand, and she's aware of where she's shooting throughout. Stay safe and God bless
Christine I have learned to appreciate the value of beans since I was a child. I raised my children and husband on beans. LOL 😆! I keep beans in the freezer and I buy canned beans for my pantry. Since we may have a hard winter, I don't have to worry (I never worry) about what to cook. I have been preparing for the last few weeks and have been stocking canned foods, seasonings and dry goods. Not the 50lb products but we are pretty good. Thanks for your "realness" and showing what we can do with a bit of creativity and a decently stocked pantry. You Rock! 😘🙏💯
Definite agreement on if a little cheese is good, a lot is better. When I lived in South Korea, real cheese was not common/affordable in most grocery stores. The first time I went to a Costco there (after living there for about a year), I got a little too excited in the cheese aisle, lol.
I've been loving seeing what/ how you cook. Tonight i'm making your rice and beans, all from my pantry as well. We eat pretty much the same stuff all the time, so I rarely shop for a certain recipe.... just shop my pantry. I'm so thrilled to find that you have a place with your environmental recipes written down for the rest of us!
Dry pasta if left in its original box or bag will get bugs in it. That’s why people who store lots of food in long term storage remove pasta/rice/beans/flour etc from its packaging and either freeze or bake it to kill off any eggs that may be inside the packaging. If you put a box of pasta or bag of rice away for awhile and go back to it don’t be surprised if there are tiny moths in it
Awesome! I have beans, cabbage, potatoes and tortillas. We'll definitely try those tacos tomorrow. I only have 1lb of beef left and don't want to use it yet. I think I have half a red pepper I can add too.
I'm guessing I watch these videos because they remind me up cooking when the kids were little. Roast a whole chicken with 10-12 baked potatoes and make 3 dinners. 1)Chicken and baked potato, 2)BBQ chicken(add BBQ sauce to chicken thighs) and home fries(cut up baked potato), chicken salad (cubed chicken)and potato salad( from cubed baked potatoes). Then put rest of chicken and bones in crock pot for chicken stock and bits of chicken for casserole and/or chicken soup. Days of stretching the food dollar popular now and popular then.
Did a variation on the sausage pasta - only 2 Cumberland sausages, smoked paprika, finely sliced flat green beans , broccoli. Not a scrap left and asked to cook it again!
For your sugar free cooking I use Splenda sugar. Used in all of my recipes. Been used it for at less 20 years husband diabetic Pillsbury do make sugar cake mix and brownie on too. The only I tell to keep your sugar goodies that are homemade will spoil faster. Sugar-free items are a little more dense so you might want to use a little less flour like 1/3 cup + 1/4 cup
I really appreciate your videos, it’s been tough with covid 19. I have so many beans as we have been using the food bank to help offset our food budget so now I have so many ideas of how to use them up! Also, I need that one pot thing you have so cross your fingers for me for Christmas lol

So glad I found you, while I’ve been home this week! I’m a new subscriber. I’m a Navy nurse in NC. Wonderful to meet you! 😊 I’m loving getting to know you and the lovely family. Had fun watching you buy all the groceries yesterday! Lol God Bless you 🙏🏼🦋🥰
If you run out of cheese, it's an "emergen-cheese!" Hahaha, I crack me up like you crack me up. 😁
😁
2:26 I replayed that over and over it was SO CUTE :') scrudiption box
I love your budget videos SO MUCH
In every family there is a struggle of a mother to save the family kitchen and the struggle of a father to save the family budget. All for raising the kids and keep the fam alive . Thats why we can not hurt or ruin their children' s heart and life .
"YAYYY WE GET TO BE COOKED" lovely
Christine, you have such a calming mom voice! Thank you for being such a positive, inspiration. 🤗
Oh, ‘ what happens to dry pasta - it gets more dry” just cracked me up!!!!!
The potato tacos are very tasty. I like to make my black beans that way too. So flavorful!
Agree potatoes turn out fantastic in the air fryer try this. Air fry your diced potatoes with olive oil, garlic, Parmesan and rosemary. DELICIOUS
Mmmmmmmm
Lol, that shirt kills me! Ha ha! 🤣
Love your ideas and videos. I am obsessed with cooking videos due to our current virus situation. Your meals always look so delicious. I am single and spend waaaay too much money on food just for me. So, I love these challenges. Keep therm coming please!
AnnEvelyn7 I love all her “sassy” shirts!
Love your attitude to food, your recipes, and your energy. I hate wasting any food and you show so many creative ways to use up what you have in the fridge or pantry. Also like your spicy flavourings.
You had me at sketchy limes and ugly looking zucchini.. 😂😂😂
Never would have thought to put potatoes in a taco lol will def be trying this recipe !! Thanks for sharing
Low waste meals! Looks so yum!
Love how you don`t waste anything! Great video!
Those potato & bean tacos look so good! I’m definitely gonna have to try that.
I made them last week. Whole family loved them. My kids ate the leftovers for breakfast.
Hi Christine. Sausages are a bit pricey where I live. So what I did is substituted sausages with burger patties. Yumm!
Perhaps you can add a bit of starch like potato flour in to the soup. It looks bit watery but really each to their on liking.
Love your frugal food. Thx babe
Super authentic lady.
I take my sausage out of the casings too! My husband thought it was weird, now I can tell him see! I wasn't weird lol
I am 3 minutes in and I love you... What happens to dry pasta, it gets more dry?!! I died. Found you from Jen's channel and I am so happy to have discovered you. THANK YOU!!
These meal ideas are so helpful when cooking from what we already have!!! As always your so creative!
More cheese is ALWAYS better. Doesn't matter what the dish is.
I always save my bacon fat. It gives a bacon flavour without using any bacon. It also doesn't hurt that's frugal.
Yes 👍 I do this also! Fry up some onion, garlic, Serrano pepper and add a can of beans! Top off with some cheese and yum!
Bravo me too.
I FINALLY found the spaghetti sauce you recommended
More of these, please!
The only UA-cam channel where I don't feel guilty about my expired ridiculous amount of pasta 💜
Looking at your older videos for more recipe ideas!! Love your channel!
Perfect timing, I finished the bean video just in time to watch this newly uploaded one after. Have a terrific week!
Sometimes you have to use what you have to use what you have.
Great meals will try all Spanish rice snd diced chicken is great also any rice with any diced meat and vegetables is also great
Four? Yes please. Shirley
You Rock! 😘🙏💯
Thank you so much for all the awesome recipes without meat and just using Beans thank you so much everything looks so yummy .
I'm subscribed to both yours and Jens channel because of the algorithm, not sure who I watched first but Thank you both for the great cooking ideas.
I just used almost 10 year old pasta, it was great! Trying to use old stuff first.
dryed pasta and rice can be used as old as 20 years if it has been stored well that might contain fat.
If you put a box of pasta or bag of rice away for awhile and go back to it don’t be surprised if there are tiny moths in it
I did not know about the frozen broccoli in the air-fryer hack. Sweet! I will be doing that from here on out.
Ugh, I ♥️ this lady!
Your videos make me smile so much. You relaxed and genuine style is so fun
You always make me giggle and you made my mouth water! Thanks for all you do, Christine!💕
My 2 favorite UA-camrs collaborating 🥳 Thanks for the awesome video!
Love how practical and real this was. More!!
