These could each be 2 hours long and they wouldn't be long enough
lol! I was thinking the same.
Agree 100%!!
We need John to do a weekly series on Bebop drummers of the past with Transcriptions. He could dive into certain licks, comping, and talk about the past greats! This kind of stuff is sorely lacking in the top drum mags. Please consider doing something like this MDS! I would definitely pay for this type of show if it were offered. Thanks again for this series!
These cymbals sound great because of the guy playing them.
Thank You John and whomever for putting the "Era Stamp" in the descript Thanks.
Man! I forgot about that cymbal! What a beauty. I loved that 18 though. I totally forgot where that cymbal went. Awesome to see it again. And hear it! P.S. that bass drum sounds unreal.
John makes a curious speculation in this, about how playing a cymbal that has been unplayed for a long time can change it's demeanor. Recently, I bought a used 20" K that had been played frequently in a 'gospel chops' group...which means it was played pretty heavily and somewhat loudly. When I first got it, it was really unwieldy and brash and with a very noticeable (and mildly annoying_ high pitched over-ring. To calm the over-ring, I licked 3 gummi bears and stuck them on the bell. Annoying over-ring gone. Ive put a few dozen hours on the cymbal now, and I took the gummi bears off of it to see if anything has changed...and it has. That overring has calmed down a fair bit and the cymbal has become noticeably tamer and pleasant. I thought it was just in my head...but maybe not, considering what John was talking about here. I am gonna go play it some more right now!!! Peace and Love!
that 22 ride with the three rivets is pure musical nirvana to my ear canals
Those hi hats are on the medium/heavier side but they still open up fast which is the key
Wow those hats sound like my Paiste Signature mix of a dark crisp bottom with a medium top
Wow, this is my favorite set so far. What a treasure.
The dead one is probably a 22" heavy, I have one, bell for days and I love the rich tones... Great for playing Bill Ward type drums!!
Cannot thank MDS enough for these videos and thank you John for sharing these treasures. I find it frustrating and saddening that until now all attempts of the american Zildjian company on recreating the old Ks failed. Spizzichino did get it, Craig Lauritsen does and Istanbul Agop comes really close with some series so why doesn't Zildjian achieve to get the sound and vibe done?
All series whether K Cons, Kerope, or various Signature Rides all have that modern twist to them which is nice and rightfully deserve a place on the market but they are far from the old K sound that they are Zildjian is aiming to achieve! Sorry had to speak my mind! : )
I think they nailed the “take five” ride sound, and a lot of k cons in person sound very close to vintage ks from the 70s. Just my opinion though
Cymbals sound awesome, but that bass drum is huge!, love it!!!
Yeah, these were my favorites so far. Looking forward to pt.4!
How about you let me play them, so we get a better idea of what they really sound like? Everything Riley plays is going to sound great. May as well be playing Rudes.
I love the sound of the 22”
Yea.. I have a 22" heavy, great for playing dark rock and roll like sabbath or heavy rock!
Those Hats sound so Sweet!
Joe Pera on the drums
Great! So much of the sound comes from John`s way of playing of course. Mehmet Tamdeger, head of Istanbul Mehmet cymbals worked at the Istanbul K.Zildijian factory for decades before starting Istanbul Cymbals together with Agop Tomurcuk. He told me that they make all Istanbul Mehmet cymbals based on the old K techniques. As an endorser i have visited the factory many times and you simply cant find a bad sounding cymbal anywhere.
Agreed. My Mehmet hats sound virtually identical to John’s.
Fantastic video series. Thank you John and MDS . 👏👏👏👊
You always open my ears John Riley 👏✌️🌻
How could you not love John? Awesome player and commissure!
Three Blind Mice cadence....
John loving that Tony sound. But who doesnt
Mr Swing! 🙏🏻
There's definitely something magical about the sound of old Ks.
My oldest cymbal is a K (stamped 'Constantinople' & trademark) ~11" flexible paper thin splash (just 220g), which dates from around 1913. I've owned it since 1984 and it's played regularly. A thumbnail flicked against its edge will splash it! Not particularly practical for today' styles of playing, but something I'd never part with.
Hi john great video and thank you. Is there a vinteg symbals to find in the store?
This series of videos on cymbals is great than thank you, so informative wow!
