Wyze Cam OG Telephoto 3X vs Reolink 4K (RLC-810) - FOV & Video Clarity Testing

  • Today, we will talk about security camera's FOV or field of view and how it relates to the video clarity of the footage that you are going to get. When WIFI cameras started getting popular, they also started making them with wide angle lenses so as to be able to see more but with the expense of video clarity. I'll demo on how 3 Reolink cameras with the same 4K sensor but with 3 different lenses have different video clarity at farther distances. I'll also be comparing it with the Wyze Cam OG Telephoto 3X (still 1080P) and see how it stacks up with Reolink 4K cameras.

I think most of us knew the theory, but it is great to show by examples with real data why narrow angle is better for identification, even if we have 1080p sensor vs 4K. These cameras can complement each other, as you said. With Wyze camera being so cheap, one can also have multiple cameras for the same price to cover more of the entry points of interest.

Great info in this video, especially the fact that you can choose different focal lengths with Reolink. Also, The Wyze cam might now be an option now for my home. Thank you.

I have three RLC- 810a. Two are the 4mm and one is a 2.8mm. I have the 2.8mm on our carport because it can capture the entire carport area while the 4mm could only capture about 70% of it. In tights areas like under my carport, the 2.8mm RLC-810a is great. I have a 4mm version pointing down the drive and it sees plates of cars that pull into the drive well.

Good analysis of having a wide angle camera coupled with a narrow FOV with zoom lens

As always, thanks for the upload.
I’m definitely copping the OG and 3X cameras.
The 3X will be used as a backup for my driveway; 🤬 act like it’s the official turn around point in my neighborhood! 😆

Even though I suspected that a narrow lens 1080 camera might be as clear as a 4k wide angle I was surprised to see the Wzye 3X was BETTER than the 4K cameras which cost MORE.
A narrow field camera works best when anyone in its field of view is confined to a narrow path such as along a driveway or along the side of a house, but for large areas a wide angle is going to be necessary so you dont miss an angle of approach. I just dont see myself pairing a wide angle with a narrow angle camera OR spending more money on a zoom lens. I'll make do with wider angle lenses

That's why Reolink has announced their fixed dual lens camera, wide angle lens with telephoto lens that can display both lens simultaneously. One camera installation and one ip addess.

Greetings from Torrance! Fantastic and informative video! I'm hoping other manufacturers will have this option or make this option available at a price point we can all subscribe to. Having a telephoto lens can be extremely helpful in identifying bad guys. Just wish the night time fps could be better, but that may happen in the future. Thanks again!

The FOV thing makes sense. I do need to look into getting some lighting for our backyard. I was thinking of a motion solar light that I can mount under the eaves of the garage. Even though it faces west I'm not sure if it'd get enough sun under there which means a separate (and ugly) solar panel. May just be easier to hard wire something if less convenient if I want to relocate it down the road.

I like to see the wyze cam og with a drive by test for license plates.. The zoomed in feature will be the norm in future as of now its cutting edge .. I also bought the wyze v3 Ptz and its a very neat camera.. I going to mount in front of house soon..

Will you be looking at Reolink’s RLC-81ma when it gets released? I believe I read that it has a dual lens with a 2.8mm and a 8mm lens. I wonder if it will be comparable to the Wyze OG 3X.

G'day, I have talked to several police officers in my location about the CCTV footage I have been able to supply. They say my CCTV is amongst the best they get. I think there are several factors that are involved.
    1. I run an RLK 16 NVR with 12 x 810 cameras and an 823A., About 1/2 the cameras record permanantly and in colour 24/7.
    2. I have LED floodlights facing the street that are on all night (corner block). Many of the street lights close to my home are broken/faulty.
    3. I provide footage copied from the NVR, Not filmed from a monitor with a Potato..
    4. As I have overlapping coverage from various angles I usually have captured events several times. This alows for choice of image to get the best angle.
    5. Even slight movement more than 100m (300ft) at night with poor lighting can help to confirm a sequence of events. These may not be recorded if you rely on "Motion detection" to save events.
I'm sure many other brands would also get the job done and if I was to pick and choise spacific cameras for each position/application a better system could be installed. However, I had no experiance with CCTV prior to getting the Reolink from a friend who works with "IT" products, The Reolink products have been eary to install and set up. I have even been able to create some UA-cam content from the footage if anyone wants to see what can be expected from "real life" applications. (street fights, car crashes and other stupid sh!t.)

I just bought the telephoto 3x because of your video, so thank you! I need to find one other camera with sharper image quality (especially at night in a garage with little light) to replace my wyze V3 that has poor image quality currently (it's so bad at night and also when zooming in). I was going to get the V3 Pro and then read a lot of bad reviews for it. I was wondering if you thought the TP Link cameras would be better (kasa or tapo?) or if you have any opinions on the Galayou cameras. I can't afford too much but I also wonder if a 2K camera that happens to be cheap is a waste of money. Thanks!!

This is going to be a topic that I need to make a video on…smooth footage ( faster FPS) is not needed to identify someone…as long it has fast shutter speed and eliminate the motion blur.. that is what is needed…we just need a clear snapshot…not motion.
